back and shoulder pain, as well as pain in my elbows and hands from rheumatoid arthritis. I tried this method and have been using it for almost 6 years now with excellent results.

Back/neck pain
If anyone responds to the post about upper back/neck pain, please let me know - I have the exact same problem, and it makes long hours just miserable sometimes! Thanks in advance!!
neck and upper back sm
Swimming helps some. Massage definitely helps. I have asked the massage therapist just to focus on my neck and upper back and to work deeply. Rates for massage depend on where you live. I pay about $60 for an hour. Sometimes you can get a half hour. Definitely ask for what you want with massage, and give feedback about what feels helpful. A chiropractor has helped and a strong vibrator has helped. Good luck! I know the pain.
back and neck pains
does anyone have any tips for backache and neck pains from sitting?  I do try to take breaks and do stretches.  As far as a good chair, any hints?  I know of a good brand but it is awfully expensive but may be worth the investment, but I would like to spend under $200 if I could.
Split keyboard mounted on chair arms versus split keyboard on desk

For longtime comfort which is best - split keyboard mounted on chair arms or split keyboard to be used on the desk?

Also, why the preference over split keyboards that come totally apart versus split keyboards that are permanently connected at the top?

I want to revamp my office and there are so many different options.

neck/upper back problems
Anyone else out there with neck and upper back problems.  I am having problems with neck spasms and it makes my head feel funny with pain into my jaw etc.  Another downfall to our jobs I guess.    Any tips from anyone that has had these and gotten relief would be much appreciated I do not like taking muscle relaxers.
back/shoulder/neck pain
last year I started out like that and so I checked the ergonomics of my keyboard, etc. I wound up moving my mouse to my left hand and that helped somewhat but later developed symptoms of a frozen shoulder. Do you get an extreme burning sensation? It took me a year to recover. I feel your pain.
I have terrible back problems
I recently inherited my still living grandmother's recliner, and prior to this had been considering buying an antigravity chair. I was just trying to figure out how I would deal with the foot pedal issue. Well, I sat down in the recliner one day and leaned back, and I realized that I could still keep my feet on the ground in this particular recliner (has an "arm" on the side to pull the feet up, but the back reclines all the way back, and can be positioned at intervals between fully reclined and upright). Anyway, I used it for about two weeks, but was having to stretch to the keyboard and began having terrible arm, wrist, and hand problems, but my back was doing FANTASTIC. I am now back in my old chair :(, however, until I can figure out what to do (inexpensively) about the keyboard tray/arm positioning problem. I still would like to figure out the foot pedal deal too, as I would like to be able to do either, recline or sit upright, but first I've just got to get myself back in that chair (my back is KILLING me). I have found a design for the keyboard tray that I think is going to be just what I need, but we are going to make one and tweak it a little bit to my specifications. I know this does not help with your tingling issues, but when we get this worked out I will post back and share with anyone who may be interested. The only other option I have seen as far as being able to do keyboarding/computer activity while being in a recliner or in bed is a very expensive setup (three or four thousand or more), and still did not address a transcriptionist's need to use a foot pedal.
agree - many MT's have chronic back/neck/shoulder problems also

Morency board and Kinesis keyboard along with comfortable chair
Hi, I have been doing transcription for 14 years and about 4 years ago purchased a Kinesis keyboard and Morency arm rest board and they have been a lifesaver.  The key to a comfortable chair is one you can adjust the height, back, seat, etc and once you get it comfortable make sure no one changes it ! Some chairs have arm rests if you don't get a Morency board and help out.
hehe I was able to nurse and type at the same time. It's all a matter of the chair and keyboard

Typing with your keyboard in your lap

To those of you who type with your keyboard in your lap, are you just placing the keyboard on the pillow or using something on top of the pillow?  Also, what are you doing in regard to your mouse?  My wrists are fine, so far, but I am having severe right neck/shoulder pain and tingling, probably from mousing.  I'm using an ergonomic keyboard and like them, but am looking to replace my Belkin split with another keyboard.

Is anyone typing from a reclining position?  I've heard talk of this and am wondering how you would operate the foot pedal in this position?

Thanks for any advice.  I've already garnered a lot of information by just reading through old posts - it's fabulous that we have the opportunity to share with each other.

Typing with your keyboard in your lap
Since reading about this last week I've been experimenting and instantly felt relief in my back and arms. With the pillow my keyboard keeps sliding off..maybe I need a bigger "fluffier" pillow, as suggested in one post. Also lowered my chair as far down as it will go and that helped, still slides off though. Thanks for the ideas you are giving. Am interested in any help I can get!!
comfortable chair/bad back
I know this sounds unlikely but when my standard office chair broke some months ago in the middle of my shift, I removed my $7 K-mart canvas "camp" chair (used for fishing trips and picnics) from its drawstring canvas bag and, unbelievably, this has been the best, most comfortable chair I've had in years! The only drawback, of course, is that it is not on rollers/casters, but it is so lightweight, it's easy to maneuver around. I know it sounds strange but it has been just a blessing for my back & rear.
computer chair for lower back support
Can anyone out there help quicken my shopping for a new chair? My lower back is out for the first time in years and I need to seriously shop for a good supportive chair. Anyone who has discovered one, please write back with the scoop - I will appreciate it!
I like a chair with arms, deep seat and high back (sm)
so I bought a leather chair from Costco about a year ago and have never regretted it.  Think it is made by Lane.  It was a little expensive but since I'm in it for hours a day - sometimes 12 - I figure it was an important investment... plus it is so good looking we often wheel into other parts of house when we need extra seating :)
You have some really cool stuff at your site. I'm sure gonna come back here. TV will Chair uncond

Can anyone suggest a super light touch keyboard? That you can't hear the typing?
I am looking for one that you can't hear the typing.  TIA
Nice job. I'm planning to come back here in the future. Central Tournament is always White Chair:

grade typing back in the 60s...lol...sm
so today, that is kind of hard to change especially when you have everything saved (macros) the way we USED to type that....it's just THIS week, I'm trying to do only 1 space after a period and I'm older than dirt!!  And I find that particular aspect of 1 space after a period very time consuming.........to make sure you didn't hit that space bar twice.
Any editors go back to typing and realize they are sloooooow now?
I do not know what the deal is, but I can only do about a THIRD of what I used to do.  VERY frustrating.  Anyone else have this problem or am I a lone dummy?  I feel so worthless lol!!
Never go back to hourly, if you adequately use macros, a typing program why would you want to sit fo

Yes they are!!!! OSi and SoftScript are neck and neck
There are MUCH better companies out there. Please, for your sake, do not go there with SoftScript.
Thanks, we have been leaning toward

a Grey, but they are more expensive and will have it for a long time, so want to make the right choice.

I've wanted one for a long time, but felt we didn't have the time to spend with it.  I'm now working from home and my husband is home most of the time also, so now seems like a good time.

Thanks for the input.

I was leaning towards sm

Plan B.  I have already jotted down some questions I need to ask her to get a better idea of what she needs first and then fax or email the proposal to her.

Thanks!

I'm guilty of leaning (sm)
in towards the monitor to hear more clearly. I don't even know what that means. It's just something I've done for 12 years. ((The monitor is not the doctor. The monitor is not talking to me.)) ;)
A terrible, terrible gamble

Medical bills are debt.  Debt is big business.   Do not expect to find any compassion for your problems when you show up without insurance.  You'll be lucky just to get care when they flag your chart "No Insurance" or "Self Pay."

If you are uninsured and do not qualify for state or federal assistance because earnings are too high, you are gambling on everything you own or will own in the future, including future earnings.

If you require elective medical care and have time to work out a cash payment deal in writing with the provider, you may be protected. You will require a signed agreement by every provider - hospital, radiology, lab, interpreting physicians, etc.  If you fail to meet the provisions of the agreements you sign, the following will apply to this debt as well.

If you receive medical care without a prior agreement on payment, you will be responsible for the debt.  After the fact, the providers have no legal reason to allow you to set up a payment plan.    If you send a monthly payment anyway without a prior agreement, the only thing you can hope for is when they take you to court a sympathetic judge or arbitrator takes this into account.  A voluntary payment sent by you won't stop any legal action and, in fact, may hurt you in the future trying to resolve the debt.

Every state has a set amount of time before a creditor can sue you (depending on the type of debt).  For most states, medical debt is 2 years.  So, from the date of service you have 2 years of collection agencies to deal with and then they simply take you to court at which point they will take everything you own and sell it at auction, enforce liens against your current and future earnings, and take every potential bit of future income or asset you may have. There has been some legal challenge to this in some states - check with your state attorney general's office to see if any headway has been made in protecting patients with medical debt.

If you think you'll just go bankrupt, think again.  Medical debt is rarely discharged now since the rules have changed, especially if you at some point indicated you would be willing to do a payment plan with the providers - this is used against you.

If you think you can maintain your health and nothing will happen, you are dreaming.  Make sure off the top that you no longer have a GB, appendix or uterus.  You'll just have to ride out all the little things - UTI, flu, sinusitis, and forget about routine maintenance care.  The stress alone of knowing you must not become ill or injured is enough to make you sick.

Anyone who tells you not to worry about medical debt while uninsured or underinsured is either ignorant of the facts, living in another dimension, or just plain lying.

Experts NOT leaning towards biofeedback...
much better success rate with medication than alternative treatments. Here's a link to an info video on "Not Just for Kids: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults" that you would find helpful. The information comes from Patricia Quinn, MD and Peter Jensen MD, Columbia University. Jensen has does some really fascinating research in ADHD. There are some more videos on the site too that you might want to wander through.

I was leaning towards Toshiba because my tech believes they are the best, but
I bought a Dell as a friend told me they are actually very reliable and cheaper to fix if they break. I don't think you'd go wrong looking in either direction given you. You just decide what you want. I wouldn't settle for less than 1 gig of RAM, 80 mg hard drive, internal wireless plus ethernet or a modem in case wireless is not available (but there are several internet cafes that you can use for a small fee and the wireless would work there). I bought a refurb off e-Bay from a trustworthy seller and have been very pleased. If you go that route, just check their feedback for the good, bad and downright ugly. You can save a lot of money if you hit the right offer. Best to you and yours.
I better switch my computer chair for a potty chair. nm

Typing. This is NOT typing, it is transcribing. There is a BIG difference. sm
Transcription includes typing, but so much more.
Well you can always strap one around your neck :)

Think about it. The possibilities are endless when you learn to be "without hands" doing this job.

If it is lunchtime, cutting a sandwich into 6 individual pieces and stabbing each piece with a toothpick works very well as you only have to do one bite at a time and your keyboard doesn't get nasty from touching the bread.

For dessert, don't buy Reeses peanut butter cups. The "Popable" Reeses fit nicely into a small cup that you can toss a mouthful from whenever the urge hits you.

I don't recommend anything that you actually have to pick up with your fingers, i.e., Cheese Doodles, Doritos, salt and vinegar chips, etc., as the keyboard gets really icky and you lose time that way or you have to wipe the residue on your pants or a leftover coffee filter.

I've also found that a straw works well with coffee once it has cooled down to tepid, as it usually does before you expect it.

stiff neck

What do you do for a stiff neck from working at the computer too long?  Mine is killing me today.

How about a neck pillow you can
That can help sometimes; you can even make one. Just sew up a tube and fill it with beans or rice. Or maybe you could get someone to massage your neck to loosen up those tight muscles? If nobody is around to do that for me, I sometimes stand under the shower with hot water or take a long soak in the tub with Epsom salts. Also, those neck rotating exercises help loosen up tense muscles sometimes. Hope it gets better; I know the feeling well. If it's not the hands, wrists, or arms, it's the back, neck, or butt.
help for stiff neck
I have many severe problems with my neck (which is one of the reasons I am on SS disability). Take a long mens tube sock and fill with rice and some lavender. Either tie the end or sew it close. Heat in the microwave, then hang it around your neck. It will work wonders. This also helps sore shoulders as well.
Stiff neck
What really helped me, and I know they are expensive, but an Aeron chair was the best MT investment I made, especially the one with the swivel arms that you can pivot to the right position for your keyboard. No more back or neck ache. At least this worked for me.
It is about the norm around here in my neck of the USA. nm

My neck does hurt too...but...
my wrists usually get super sore when I STOP typing, I guess from not using them so much. If I take a weekend off, I am in severe pain with them, usually the brace works or taking ibuprofen, but now the brace doesn't fit. Thanks for your help!! I have actually thought about trying acupuncture, someone I know did that and they don't have any back pain at all after some sessions, supposed to be covered by my insurance too. Thanks again for your help!
neck pain
I had neck pain and both wrists/hands, and they thought it was carpal tunnel, finally had an MRI and had herniated disk at C5-C6 with nerve entrapment, ended up with cervical diskectomy and pain went away for a long time, but now back in my neck when I type too much, but I also have spurs in my neck and DJD in my neck. Transcription is a tough job, repetitive motion causing back, neck and arm/hand/wrist pains. I found the Thermawraps that you can buy at the store to help a lot, it has heat and you wear it like a collar. I have been to a chiropracter and acupuncturist and these did not help at all, and that is why I had the surgery. If the neck pain keeps up, I would have an MRI, I waited too long for doctor to go ahead with one, nerve was trapped under C5-C6 for 3 years and that is why I had the surgery. Good luck, hope the pain is relieved. I had it for a long time and it can be terrible.
QA is not breathing down MY neck, as I am only the--sm
transcriptionist with a small MTSO, but they may be breathing down the MTSOs neck. All I know is that one doctor in particular, a felon on top of that, has his office QA each report for errors and for line count. If he feels the line count is in error, he demands a return of funds charged...not from me personally, but from the MTSO. My MTSO also has another account that discovered that their transcription company was charging for lines not typed, i.e. ALL lines, and fired them for it. So they DO check. Even doctors do not want to get ripped off. The OP can charge whatever she likes. Maybe 11 cpl in her area is the going rate. That is not for anyone else to decide, but she must be honest above all, or she won't have ANY account for long.
Maybe she won't be such a pain in the neck
once you have your cervical surgery.  They can probably get off paying her real cheap.  Sounds like you are being duped.  You may want to consider working for another practice who appreciates you instead of going above your head and hiring people since you are the supervisor.  If they didn't think it was a good idea, they wouldn't have had the girl waiting there for you to train when you got back.  Unfortunately this happens.  Believe me, I know from experience, I worked for a hospital for over 15 years.  They hired a lady that was ready for retirement.  She comes and goes as she wishes.  She did not listen to a word I said.  She had medical problems herself and as far as I was concerned was not worth my time.  So you know what I did?  I resigned.  End of story.  Now I am happy and not having to train.  So instead of thinking they care about what you think, start caring about what you think and find a position somewhere else where you are more appreciated.      It sounds a little late in this game to train even someone with a lot of experience if your plan is to go out in just a few months.  Everyone can be replaced, believe me, it is so true.
So what neck of the woods are you from?
In other words, where do you live in case this is a little deep for you. I have been a Transcriptionist for over 30 years and it is simply our way of speaking here in the south- has nothing to do with being lazy or unintelligent either one. Even with my southern twang, I still pride myself on my understanding not only of English but what we do for a living every day. No slouch here.
I know about CTS, but do any of you have neck pain? SM

My neck is killing me, I guess from staying in the same position for hours. I am starting to feel a knot in my neck!

Thanks.

neck pain
I like the center of my monitor even with my eyes. This keeps my neck straight. Also if you wear glasses be sure to measure the distance from your eyes to the monitor so you are not pulling your head foreward.
I use a MSFT Natural keyboard at home and the laptop keyboard on the road. nm

That is terrible! sm

If I were the parents, I would most likely be blaming myself; not my friends that I left my 2 year old with and not the person who hit the child on the highway!  It would have been my responsbility to either have my 2 year old with me or at least make sure the people I left him with were responsible.  As for the driver of that car, what were the driving conditions; apparently it was at night; was it raining; was it foggy; did they even see that little, tiny child; was the child standing or crawling or just lying on the road????????  It sounds horrible but maybe the driver just felt a bump!  Maybe the driver didn't even realize he had hit a child!  Maybe the driver just thought he ran over a board in the road.  I'm one of the few, I guess, who believes the safety of your child lies only within your power.  According to some, accidents do happen, but I don't believe in accidents!  Accidents, according to the dictionary, are considered to be unforseen incidents.....we as parents, however, must use common sense to try to abate these "unforseen incidents".

Again, I do have greath empathy for the parents, their friends and for the driver of that car.  They certainly did not preplan this but maybe a little bit of preplanning would have prevented it.  I am sure that little 2 year old will be another beautiful angel in Heaven and that eventually his parents will know he is happy and in a good place.

That was terrible
Isn't is nice to know though, that later that night after the ER visit, the Cialis is what did us both in. You are probably still seeing stars - perhaps that is how I confused the daytime with the nighttime - it was because you kept saying something about seeing stars.
Wow, that's terrible...
The test measures personality, not character.  It's a shame that they used the test so inappropriately.  If it makes you feel any better, Oprah is an INFJ.
That's terrible!!
biggest losers but not in a good way.
This is terrible....It was
70 degrees here today....just beautiful outside, and tonight the low is going to be around 30 degrees.  They are calling for sleet and snow this weekend.  Everyone is going to end up sick after two days of spring-like weather and then back to winter again.
Terrible

I wonder if the accounts are seeing a reduction in the price that they are being charged -- that is what I want to know.   Went through this when NFTA came into effect with my husband and truck drivers.  Also the car industry has gone through this with all the jobs going overseas.   Pretty soon the doctors won't have any patients because no one will have insurance or jobs or be able to pay so they will be out of a job.   I hope it eventually all backfires on them but I doubt it.  I have talked to my local doctors, senators, anyone that will listen about this but no one seems to be worried.  Tax bases will go to pot with everyone out of work, no one to pay the government.    All we can do is to keep voicing our opinions.
