I had this problem and ended up getting a piece of plywood 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick.  It was big enough so that I had some mobility with my chair, plus I wasn't falling into those grooves that the carpet protector gets.  A lumbar yard should be able to cut you a piece the exact size you need.  You may need to find someone who can haul it for you, depending on the size of your vehicle.
