National Mental Health Association
has a web page with some good information on bipolar FAQs, symptoms, treatment, etc. Here is their address: www.nmha.org/bipolar/public/signs/cfm.

My daughter is totally fine on medications. The most important thing for her to do is get back to the doctor and get back on or have her medications adjusted.

National Association for Medical Transcription
or international...something like that. I think they should pack up the whole thing and move to those places they are promoting so much.
Your national is liable for SS and Medicare tax not you. They thinkyou are self employed. nm

NASE (National Assocation for Self Employed) has insurance sm

but not sure how expensive it is or how much it costs to join NASE.  Their website is www.nase.org.

Good luck!

Not MT association, but a TRANSCRIPTION association.
This includes general transcriptionists, legal transcriptionists, etc. I did sign up because it was free for now. I am curious to see where this goes.
A small national is a national company that is smaller
than a big national.  There are a few "big" nationals, where they have hundreds, if not thousands of employees.   I work for what I call a small national, only has about 30 employees.    An MTSO could also be considered a small national.
I went from national to small back to national
My large national has all the resources and money to operate successfully and have decent platform, etc., to work on, the small company did not, and I went back to the national.
There is an association whom I believe has
a whole guideline of QA scoring on their website. I do know that having 2 critical errors in one job is NOT good, though, no matter the company. One critical error really brings down your percentage - can't imagine two.
Homeowners' Association
Most neighborhoods around here have a homeowner's association. I think at our townhouse we used to have we got approval for landscaping, but now we have a single-family house with a yard. We were supposed to check before changing the color of the house, but we just changed it from a faded cream-yellow to a very subtle, hard-to-describe yellow/green/beige. It's very easy on the eyes, so I knew they wouldn't take notice. I also had a carpenter add some extra trim over the windows and garage door. It looks a little less plain with more white trimwork. We also took out many small trees and big bushes and put in other trees and bushes, and have had no complaints. But I see somebody in the neighborhood painted their house a bright blue-green, similar to my Stedman's Equipment Words book. It's hideous, even if there is some brick on the front of the house to tone it down a little. Now they should be fined. I pity their next-door neighbors.
Do you have a homeowner's association where you are? If you do maybe you could
mention it to them or the landlord or someone else that will handle it.  She will probably know it is you, but at least you won't have the stress of having to deal with it.   I have a neighbor I have similar issues with and I told him off in not such nice language and told him I wasn't going to put up with it and since then things have been a lot better.   Our association as a newsletter and they were going to put an article in it talking about property line issues and respecting your neighbor, maintaining you property, etc.   We've been here 34 years and he has been here 10 years.  I keep hoping he will move as one daughter is getting married this summer and another graduating high school (unless she flunks again), but he keeps doing repairs to his house, keeps adding on to the deck, etc. so I don't think he is going anywhere soon.
Need an association who gets back to being for MTs!
I wish somehow we could start a new group from the bottom up, like AAMT did way back when - with a new mission that takes into account all the changes, as well as how AHDI has taken the MTs back so far in pay and other issues.

Anyone think it's possible?
Am going for an interview for in-house RAD MT for association
in Austin, Texas. Can anyone give me an idea of the pay scale for this market--probably hourly? I've never worked in-house in a large city. I'd really appreciate any advice.
If they just add an E, they can be the East Asian Association for MT. nm

AAMT's new name: Association for Integrity of

They will accept a broader sector healthcare professionals involved in healthcare documentation.

Hmmmm.

Are these abbreviations taken? I'm seriously considering starting my OWN association sm

and calling it AMTS: AMERICAN Medical Transcription Society and leave the AAMT or whatever their new name is, to the transcription WORLD.

My "society" would be kind of like them but the only difference is that absolutely NO oversea members would be allowed; only those American MTs working in other countries who could prove to the society or association that they are, in fact, American Born and Bred.

What do you say? I would charge a minimal amount per year and begin local chapters.....by contacting local colleges and tech schools and employers telling them about our local networking, American, society or association.

I would periodically work with large MT companies and large hospitals telling them of our highly skilled MTs and DEMANDING that pay be increased and showing them why American MTs are the way to go......Doesn't that sound like fun?  It wouldn't be anything like a union, as I don't believe in unions, but a UNION of MTs around this great country I call MY AMERICA!

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS YOU!!!!! Allah and Buddha could bless the AAMT all they want, but I just don't think they will do that.

Someone should call AAMT out on its association with (sm)
Indian transcription. Also, maybe medical facilities should be provided with lists of MTSOs - those that offshore, and those that don't, and the reasons why they shouldn't send their business to the latter. Might at least open their eyes. If someone's personal medical record goes offshore I think whoever in a medical organization that allows it should be held accountable and liable in case something happens to adversely affect the patient's identity, credit, or healthcare. Food for thought for the Fat-Cats.
Association for Healthcare Documentation
"As a patient, I worry less about WHERE my records are being transcribed, and more about WHO is doing the transcription. I would opt for a qualified CMT in India handling my records over an unqualified individual transcribing from their dining room table with little experience and no security - where anyone could walk into their "home office" and access my information."

That's a laugh. She'd rather have a "qualified CMT in India" (where there is no HIPAA or anything like it) than an "unqualified individual transcribing from their dining room table..." Why am I supposed to assume that this picture of a dining room slacker is the opposite of an Indian MT?

How about another option, Ms. Fox: (Lemme guess: Karen Fox???) How about entrusting your records to a highly qualified American MT with professional standards & work ethic & who would do her/his best to protect the confidentiality of your records even if there were no laws against doing so, whose native language is American English, but who hasn't bothered to take some bogus test thought up by the chicks in Modesto to fund themselves, self-appointed guardians of all things MT? Now there's a novel idea.

Apparently she hasn't read the publication
http://mtindia.info/news/latest/heartland-information-services-spryance-inc.-merge.html

which would beg to differ with her contention that Indian MTs don't get any special pricing.

Well heck. My workload was cut to less than half after the hospital I work for began offshoring to people AHDI credentialed, people who have a cost of living that is a small fraction of mine & who can do the work I do for a small fraction of what I can do it for. I feel so much better knowing that at least they don't get a lapel pin.
Currently employed
Hi. I have been with then since 02/2006 and extremely happy with them. As of this past month, I actually became and employee instead of IC and will be getting insurance. Hope this helps.
I think 30-40K if employed

There are variables.  Is the person working 10-12 hours days and pretending they are working 8?  I know many who are.  If so, income should be considerably higher.  People with their own accounts can usually make 50-60K or more.

For a 6-8 hour days, 5-day weeks, as an employee with experience, I don't think this job should ever pay less than $30,000.  It takes too much concentration, medical knowledge and complete isolation to pay any less.  Hospitals pay at least that and you are expected to take breaks, lunch, talk with other staff and physicians, get sick sometimes, have bad days and get bad authors sometimes, take vacations and generally be a human being.  Working from home, most of us hunker down and feel guilty if we have anything else we need to do, then making it up at all hours of the night or our supposed days off.

Are you self-employed with your

If you are employed at
MQ, the reason people are making 8 to 10 cpl is probably because that is what they were hired in at when their company was bought. They probably have not had raises either.
I most certainly am self-employed

Obviously, you work as an employee.  Sure hope you got a raise to change from what you were hired at.  Again, not all of us can be that flexible to just change.  We do have a life.  Furthermore, anyone can dial in and listen to a dictation on the weekend if they need it that bad.  Just call the floor get the identifying numbers, call the number, plug in the identifying patient info and badda bing, you've got the dictation.  It used to happen all of the time at the hospital I worked at because they didn't want to wait on the outside MTSO that was soooooooooooo slow.  TAT was never met or hardly ever.

Indian Association for Medical Transcription?
I hear you. It is to bizarre to see that the only way AAMT can continue to exist is because of their financial support from the Indians - HELL-O - last I checked wasn't it American Association for Medical Transcription? Ok, let's see, maybe if I transcribe work for France I can get certified there even though I live here, no I think the Australia sound better, oh wait... I like Thailand, maybe I can .....
Well, this site doesn't allow mention of the Association.

Are any IC Incorporated since they are self-employed?
Just wondering if any IC out there have set themselves up as a Corporation.  Being tax illiterate, it seems like I do not have many deductions when it comes time to file.  My DH is looking into opening a business to provide a service and someone with a similar service suggested to him to file for corporation to be able to receive more tax benefits and deductions.  My CPA over the last 10 years has never suggested it to me even though I ask him what I could I do for more deductions.  Is this possible?
The first rule of being self-employed is that

you set your own line rate.  However, we all know that NONE of the MTSOs hiring IC MTs allow us to set our own rate.  They "offer" a rate, and we accept if it's OK.

I worked for a real cheapo doctor when I first started out.  He paid hourly and kept riding my backside to type faster because he only wanted to pay for the actual time dictated instead of the time it took to transcribe.  More than once I told him that it takes an average of 3:1 typing to talking ratio to get it done.  It worked out to be $.03 per line.  I dropped him like a bad habit.  He bounced through a few other transcriptionists who all quit on him before he wound up having to pay to outsource to a service.

Ind 401K for self employed

There is a new type of retirement fund for self employed business people where you can put money in as both an employee ($15,000) and as a percentage of your profits as the business owner.  It is called an Ind 401K.  Here is a link...

Self-employed-need advice

I am a self-employed MT, trained by the office I have been contracted with for 9 yrs.  When I started, it was myself and an in-house Transcriptionist working for 4 physicians.  I gave a 24 hr TAT.  I had one 18-month-old child when I started, and was able to work around 6 hours a day.  I drove about 40 min to work and back, picked up tapes, working sometimes 6-7 days/week.  Since then, they have hired 2 more drs. and 3 NP's.  The in-house MT retired, but they did hire another MT who works at home.  I had another daughter, and a set of twins in those 9 yrs.  They have always known I try to work around my children's schedules.  As I am sure many of you do, I was getting up in the middle of the night working, working on and off throughout the day and at night.  The new MT and I are backed up now and we can't possibly get it all done.  It is more like 48-72 hr TAT.  They call all through the day asking me to stop what I am doing right then and search the tape, type the note and fax it ASAP.  I picked this profession to work around my children's schedules, not have to push them aside at every moment to cater to the office.  I do not have a certificate in MT, was just trained by this office.  I checked in to other places, but the pay is much less as I get paid 65 char/line including spaces at $.125/line.  The reason they pay so well is because they know I probably can't get on somewhere else with no certificate and no experience in any other field.  They want to make sure I stay there.  Also, the driving is ridiculous.  They refuse to get technology for telecommuting.  They refuse to hire someone else.  On top of that, I was just diagnosed with IST, and am on Toprol and not capable of working the hours I once did.  Is there anyone else out there who understands or has any advice?

yep, two. I'm self employed in three ventures. sm
1. I am a soapmaker at www.sarva.biz and, as of recent, http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5120869

2. I am a yoga therapist in the style of www.pryt.com

And also studying to be a yoga teacher in another lineage.

Yes, I do all of this with bilateral CTS. I intend to specialize in yoga for CTS sufferers and am nearly there with my education.

Turn lemons into lemonade :-) It's those other things that motivate me to finish my MT work every day, and my MT work informs my yoga therapy so tremendously.
Happened to U but are you now employed,

Self Employed Question

Hi all. I am new to this board. I have a home based secretarial service and do both medical and legal. I have never worked for a big company, just attorneys and docs as well as sales profesionals with no secretary. I have always charged by the page, but I have a possible new client that wants me to bill her by the line. Is .12 per line reasonable or too little for medical? Are there any other home based self employed individuals who can offer advice on per line charges?

Thanks!

My friend has been employed by the ...sm
same hospital that hired her as a newbie. She has been there 10 years. She does good. She has her hourly wage plus incentive pay and benefits. She has one of the good jobs. They outsourced the rest of the MT work except radiology, which is what she does. They outsourced the radiology also a few years ago to an MTSO and she went to work for the MTSO who got the radiology account from her hospital. Well the doctors there in radiology at the hospital raised some cane and demanded the inhouse MTs be brought back. The work was bad from the MTSO MTs and they demanded their MTs back. She was lucky. That is what you call appreciative doctors who value the MTs who do their transcription.

What do American MTs expect from transcription association like the AAMT? SM

I posted this question over on the company board as there was some talk abou the AAMT changing its name and how they dropped "American" from their name because they basically have opened up memberships to the whole world and then something was said about American MTs needing an organization that represented us.

So my questions would be what kind of benefits or services do you expect from an MT organization or association?  Would change any of the BOS rules or would you want a new style guide to be created?  Would you want the association to function as a union, insuring job security and fair pay?  Would you be willing to pay union dues or membership fee and if so what do you think is a reasonable fee?  What about certification - should it be offered or is it unecessary?

I've felt for some time that we (MTs) weren't adequately represented by the AAMT and there was a need for an organization that could effectively stabilize the MT industry especially in recent years with outsourcing work overseas and taking jobs away from American MTs.

I am copying this from the MQ board and feel it is so important that it belongs here!  We may have some new muscle here.  At least there is hope....

Self-employed even worse getting paycheck
Bill three doctors at the end of the month, and still waiting two weeks later, sometimes three. I even stay up all night and do a 12h turnaround time. You'd think they would see I was paid in a reasonable amount of time!

Medical Insurance for Self-Employed
Hi Everyone:   Does anyone know of an medical insurance that is a PPO Plan for me and spouse in Tenn that does not cost an arm and a leg?  I have 2 job offers, one is a company but cannot afford their insurance for both of us, so I will take out on me only and the other job offer is IC at 13 cents a line which is good for this area.  Help!!!!
Let's see...American Medical Association vs. the AAMT Book of Style..
o
American Association of Medical Transcription Service Owners
They do not represent the rights of the individual Transcriptionist it seems but rather promote their organization in order to continue to exist and to continue to survive, they seem to think they should stand up for the service owner and not the MT.

You'd think they would be giving information on how to get more production since our wages have stood still and unless speed engines are used, we make much less than what one would think.
