Don't put .doc if you are adding that. For instance if your report is on john smith and you save it as SmithJ that's all you have to put. Because it is a window's document it will automatically add .doc. So, if you are actually typing save as "smithj.doc" it is saving as Smith.doc.doc maybe it is confusing it.
Also try to save one and notice at the top where it says "Save in" that it says My Documents. I have also in the past had to click on file, open and select my documents if it was not selected, then enter to close that window. Now try to save as again.
