A laptop is really no different than a desktop and whatever

you need on your desktop to work, you want on your laptop.   More and more laptops aren't coming with a dial-up modem and I would want that if traveling so that you have another option for connection.   Depending on how/where you travel you may never need it, but I think you always need several options for connecting.   I have used a laptop only for 5 years.   I do use an external keyboard, but it isn't wireless.   I don't know if computers have the ability to have something built-in for a wireless keyboard and/or mouse, but if not you have to have to connect something to your computer and that will just be another piece of equipment to have to keep you with.

There are a lot of companies who advertise "internet based," but that doesn't mean necessarily that you can just download dictation and work off-line.  Many companies want you to type live into their system, so if you are going to be looking for a new position you need to be sure about the details.

Some companies require you to use their equipment, so traveling wouldn't work well with something like that.   If you are able to use your own equipment if you had a laptop already they could load your laptop to start with.

I have an HP laptop and a desktop....sm...

I've had the laptop since January 2007 and the desktop since December 2005. I have been pleased with both.  Tech support is from India but make sure you tell them you use your computer for business purposes and you'll get someone who speaks very good English.  Otherwise, you'll be repeatedly saying, "Scuse me.  Could you repeat that?"

My DH has two HP laptops and has been pleased.  Then again, my DD and her father, my ex-husband, both have Dell laptops and have been pleased.  They don't run theirs as much as I run mine though with several programs running at one time.

Get Windows XP Pro.  Don't go with Vista.  There are still some compatibity issues with MT software.

Laptop vs. desktop - I don't get it
The size of the computer shouldn't matter. It's probably the "wireless" that concerns them (though if a VPN is used and/or you have very good security software it shouldn't matter). Just plug in like you do at home and you should be able to connect.

I use a laptop and desktop...
The company (MQ) provided the desktop, the laptop is mine.  I do not think they provide laptops.
I have a desktop and a laptop...
I got the laptop for Christmas just in case the other computer died and guess what, the other computer died...the motherboard...just I just got a brand new desktop instead of paying to fix the motherboard since they wanted an arm and a leg...so for me having the laptop has been a God send...but it is not something you need to do to work at home...
You need the same specs in a laptop as you have in your desktop.

You needs at least 512 RAM, a good sound card, Ethernet/wireless card, and a dial-up modem if you plan to travel and work, so you have multiple options for obtaining work.   Any computer you buy off the shelf should have everything you would need but maybe the dial-up modem.

If you use a foot pedal you may need to be an adapter to convert your pedal to USB, if you are using serial/game port with desktop.

How to connect laptop to desktop sm
My desktop will not connect to the internet, no internet explorer working yet my laptop connects so if I can connect to my desktop somehow could I start up the internet that way and download internet explorer to my desktop so I will not get an error message? Confusing, I know, but I did a disk compression and I think that's how it got messed up. A system restore will now be allowed on any old dates tried. It's very frustrating.
using desktop computer mobile as a laptop

Anyone have an idea about using a desktop computer as a laptop?  I am wanting to take a roadtrip and I had a laptop that has a cracked monitor screen that I used a Belkin wireless internet PCI card in the side of it with WiFi internet connection.  Is there a way to use my physical harddrive and establish the same wireless internet connection with WiFi?  I do not have the same port that the laptop has on my harddrive that the Belkin wireless card fit into, but is there another card that plugs into the desktop harddrive that will have the same effect?  Thank you all.

Desktop or Laptop? Gotta buy a new puter...sm

Not sure whether I would like to buy another desktop or a laptop.  My hubby has a laptop and the only way I can transcribe on his is if I use an adaptor to connect my ergonomic keyboard.  I am wondering if the screen from the laptop would cramp my style.  I am leaning more towards another desktop because I can use my hubby's when traveling, but then still question what brand.  Anyone willing to give some suggestions as far as brand, specs, capabilities.  I would rather hear from fellow MTs versus sales people in the store selling me things I really do not need.  Thanks!!

switching peripherals from desktop to laptop

if they have previously been used on that machine, does the machine have to be turned off before attaching them?  don't know what i'd do without you guys on this board, be lost in space i guess...

Anybody here work only on a laptop and not use desktop computer at all?
Does it drive you crazy with the small keyboard and small screen? Maybe it's something you get used to and compensate for when working. I'm considering getting a laptop just for work to keep things separate but looking for pros and cons of this. I figured somebody on the board has some advice on this.
Thanks! It sounds like an air card can also work between desktop and laptop
Thanks so much for all this info...It sounds like you can get air cards that plug into USB ports that you can interchange between your desktop computer and your laptop for on-the-go or if there were a power outage. Am pretty low tech but seriously considering this. A lot would depend on the dependability of the signal from my home. If it were steady, I would consider cutting (ha ha) the cable internet which is 48$ plus taxes and just have the broadband (60$ ?) which I could use with my desktop computer or take with me using a laptop and also could use with a laptop in case of power outage. hmmmmmm
I bought a desktop and laptop in December. Can I claim on taxes..
and is there a limit to how often you purchase computers for your work? A friend thought you could buy one a year and claim it.  I bought the laptop and desktop in December and already hate the laptop, but I hate to purchase another one if I cannot claim it this year. Oh, also if I charged the computers on my Dell account in December but did not start making payments in January 2006 can I still claim for 2005 taxes. Thanks.
I have a desktop Dell and it has been alright so far, but I've never owned a laptop.
What brand are you currently using then?
Made by Dell. I have had no problems with any of my laptop or desktop Dells.
.
I've purchased one laptop and one desktop system used/refurbished, sm
...both from that place I mentioned, and you wouldn't know them from used. I used the laptop happily for many years (still have it, though it's quite out of date now), and the PC is going on it's 2nd year with no problems. You do have to be careful when buying used, but if you're dealing with a reputable site that has a good rep, it's usually not a problem at all and the savings can be tremendous.
A computer is a computer, whether it be laptop or desktop.
I have both and use both and I bought both of mine...most companies do not provide computers...
To all of you Escriptionist out there...Laptop question. Have any of you found a laptop that you can
thing. I tried one of those adapter that goes from the 9-pin to the USB but when I plugged in the USB my foot pedal did not work right. I know supposedly there is a help section on the escription website that says the adapter may work and how to make them compatible etc but it never worked for me. Has any of you find a solution or a laptop that this foot pedal with work with. I'd like to work while traveling and get a laptop but it never worked on my old one. Ideas??
won't install

Keeps looking for something on a CD (which it didn't come on). Also, a file called scan.msi (installation file), which is not on the system.

Help?

Have any of you been able to install
nm
Yes, usually you can install on up to 3
computers.  Even if someone else has registered you should be able to install it, just probably will not get support.  I never register any of my software in case I want to sell it/give it away.  So far I've never needed support that their website didn't provide.
you should be able to install it...

it opens as an Adobe Acrobat file.  Do you have Adobe on your computer?  If not, you can download it, for free, at their site.

When you put the CD into your drive, you should see the BOS folder and one of the files says "Adobe Acrobat Installer".  Click on that and it will start the install for you.

BOS install

I installed mine under Program Files and made a shortcut to my desktop but it may be easier for you to just install it on your desktop since that is probably where you will be using it from most often.  You can always change it later if you want (when you are not so worn out ).

For me the book takes sooo much time to try to find anything but with the CD installed, you can search the whole BOS and it will find all the instances of what you are looking for.

I don't remember anything about it asking for a language. Why not choose English?

Good luck!  Email or post if you have ?s.

Yes, it is possible to install...
do a search for * install * on this board - right above your message - and you will see instructions as this has been posted before.
Did you install
the software on the laptop, or did  the company your work for install it on your laptop?  Thank you.
Thank you. Did not want to install
and then have their computer jam.
License
I shouldn't have said insurance, that is always the misleading on my part and I'm trying to work on that. If it's not insurance, then why would I need to be licensed? And again, as far as the providers, check the website to see if there are any providers next to you. I always check before I sign up a new member to make sure they will be able to use the benefits.
LIcense

Have been doing this for 15+ years and when I first called the City of Portland, they said no, but they have since changed their lawa and now I need one.   Pay a percentage of what I make per year on the net.  But each city could be different but if you want all the advantages of being a business with write-off's etc. you gotta pay.  I have absolutely no traffice to my house,. my subs work in their own home but still need a City of Portland busoiness license.   Sorry if I made typo's as I am typing without my reading glasses -- kind of like being blind.

Patti

PS check with your state about registering your name of business also.

Getting an IC license?
How do you go about getting your IC license?  I'm in Montana.  Thanks!
license
I don't know, I don't need a license where I live at all. I checked with an accountant who deals with MTs and I just get listed as a sole proprieter and that's it. If I hire subs I just file 1099s but I don't need any kind of incorporation or license or anything. You should check with someone locally. Sometimes the library has help for small business people but you'll probably save yourself some frustration by asking around to find someone who knows something about MT.
IC license
In my state, you have to have an independent contractor's license, which you obtain through your state's Dept. of Labor & Industry (or whatever it is called in your state). The doctors' offices I have contracted through also wanted me to show that I have liability insurance. If you work for an MTSO, I don't know that they would require the liability insurance and you should probably ask them.
Bytescribe 3x install

We've been using Bytescribe for years and are happy with the product. We recently added a new customer, so I purchased a DocShuttle Dictator and also found out, upon receiving it, that there was a 3-times install license. I suppose they have been experiencing, or think they have experienced piracy.

What I did not read in this thread is that you can, for about 10 or 20 dollars more, purchase a version of all this software that has a dongle (thing you plug into the USB port) so that you can install it as many times as you want. The software checks for this device and does not run unless it is there.

I think that Bytescribe could have made this clear to their customers and on the web site. Even though I am technical, this passed me by about why there was a dongle and no-dongle version. It didn't clearly state what the dongle did and why one would purchase it...until I called and asked after my purchase.

I would also suggest to everyone that the 3x install may not be part of prior licenses of the software, so I would guess that a new policy by Bytescribe does not affect software that came out before this policy and licensing arrangement. I've never bothered to check it out.

Overall, I think that Bytescribe is a great company. It is likely a small company like many of ours and cannot handle large numbers of inquiries with many variations that exist all the time. They've been very friendly to us and very responsive on all support requests. The only thing I wish they would do is add more features for more complex business interactions with multiple customers and multiple contract transcribers. The transcription business is getting more complex, especially with HIPAA and large distributed medical offices.
Really have no clue, but did you install the new RAM - sm
in the first slot? The larger memory strip has to go in the first slot, and the smaller RAM/DIMM whatever you have goes in the next slot. Is that possibly the problem?
Usually only one install per OS. Call
p
Either. Run will install it on your computer,
Save will put the program on your hard drive and you will have to find it and install the program from there.

Once installed, use the Load button to get the files to play in Express Scribe.

Can Ii install the CD on both of my computers? nm
n
Do you need to BUY Word and install it?? nm
s
cannot install Winscribe

Has anyone else had trouble installing Winscribe?

When I try to install I get the install prompt and then a progress bar, but no progress is made...I can get it installed on other PCs, but not the one I need to work on.  MTSO is no help and I am out of suggestions...I have rebooted, changed web browsers, checked popups, checked security settings, checked firewall settings...I'm at a loss.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!!!

How to install a program:
Download it and save it to the desktop.

Click on icon on the desktop (setup) to install it.

Follow instructions.

Business license...sm

You'll probably need an Occupational License if you'll be filing as self employed on your 1040.  Check with your local state or city tax department.  I live in Florida and I'm required to have an OL from both my county and my city and both must be renewed yearly.

My dog has a driver's license. sm
He loves to chase cars, but the high gas prices have forced him to get a job so he can continue.
Business license
My attorney says it does not make a difference if you are working out of your own home or not. If you have an income-generating business, you need a business license. The best thing to do is to call your local Department of Business Registration in your own city and ask.
I live in VA too and have to have a license
Not sure why the person above says she doesn't have to have one. I checked with my local office for the Commissioner of Revenue and they stated that I DO need one if I am working out of my home. Both of the local companies that I work for insisted that I have a business license also before they would send me any work. Just make sure you check with the appropriate people so you don't get into trouble later down the line. My license is only $40 a year, so it's not bad at all.
Business License
As you see, there is a lot of controversy with this business license issue. Do I or don't I? Many factors are involved. I live in Ohio and I also have many friends who have their own businesses and they advertise in the yellow pages. One friend has had a chimney sweep business and still does for the last 15+ years. He was not required to obtain a business license... his social security number is his license number used for reporting all income to the IRS. He also occasionally has a few friends who help him with chimney inserts and he pays them by check with his business name printed on those checks. He simply reports and pays all taxes, even city taxes due to the fact he works for many residents throughout several cities in this state. He deducts just about everything and anything you could possibly think of also. I would think after doing this for 15+ years, he would have been in trouble if it were not legal, especially since he is a fire fighter still working for the city he lives in. In working for MQ, you can also deduct any office supplies you purchase in order to do your job, i.e., even when they used to charge rental fees for you to use their computers when you or if you were statuatory or PT. Moving forward, I also know a friend of my family who is close to 65 years old, also living in this state, and he has been an IC for over 30 years. He is a journalist for a few outdoor magazines, charges his fees, advertises, and also works for a major company here as an IC.......all without a business license. Again, just a formality of making sure you report any and all income. After 30 years, he would have had an audit by now. I agree with everyone that it depends on what state you live in and/or city. Good luck and I hope you find the answers you are looking for.
Unfortunately, the license is required sm
I have never had to have one, but the clinic I am going to work for requires it. It is a lot of hassle, and I can't wait until it's over and done with :)
Problem with PDM License key ??
I have been offered to work for a transcription company from a friend (she knows the boss) and have already installed Gear Player on my computer.  The boss sent me a Philips Digital Pocket Memo disc to help me hear the sound and during installation it asks me for the "License Key."  I don't have it or the book or anything with a number in it.  I called this boss and she said the book was lost and for me to contact the Philips company.  I did via email and I left a voicemail and hope they call me tomorrow (Monday, 10/2).  Shouldn't she have handled this since she bought it?  grrrr   I'll see how far I get with the Philips people and if I can't then I'll ask her to please call.  I'm near to Gear Player but if I can't install this disc and do some work (I need the $$ badly!) I'll have to look on the job board for any that require this.  Signed_ Frustrated but Ready MT of 23 years experience!
Business license

You need to check with your city and state to see what you need.  Portland, OR tried to crack down on some IC's especially if you declare yoursef as a small business.  16 years ago they said no, now they say yes.  I just did it this year to be safe and legal.  I also registered the name of my company with the state.   Good luck.

What is a gearplayer license?
How is this obtained?
business license in GA
I live in GA and I have been told by my city hall that I have to purchase a business license, (which I've been doing for a few years now).  Now they want to tax all my office equipment on a yearly basis as well as want me to pay for the yearly business license.  I tried explaining to them that I do not run a business from home, that I just work for someone (as an IC).  They told me it does not matter.  Okay, I can see having to purchase a business license (whatever), to be compliant with the law, but the fact that they now want to tax my equipment every year; that's going over the line, in my opinion.
License transfers

When you buy software you buy the license to use it. You can use Instant Text  on more than one computer if you are the only user.

You can transfer your Instant Text license to another person (sell the software) by notifying Textware Solutions - once you sold IT - that you are no longer using the software and that you transfer your software license (which includes tech support) to the new user providing name and email of the new user.

The new user should make sure she/he gets the media, the book, and the registration number which is necessary to receive tech support and Upgrade prices on later versions.

Version 1.11 came out in 1996. Nobody is using Windows 3.5 anymore. Why would you buy an obsolete version?

As for Version III Pro, you also will be buying a software that is 10 years old. I know, many Instant Text users are still very happy with it, but they have received the tech support when they needed it, and don't mind that it is not available anymore.

When you look for an expander, consider the quality/price and compatibility equation. You may have to pay more, but you get advanced technology, and compatibility won't be an issue.

I hope this information helps.

Anyone required to have bus. license...sm
to work as IC?  Was going to work for company, but require I have a business name and license.  Also pay per page and not per line.  Never ran across this before.
