I have DSL also, and used to use VPN (which I hate, by the by) with my previous employer. When I first had my DSL set up in my home, my I-net would disconnect when I received phone calls. That's a DSL issue, and your phone company would need to come out to do some work on your wiring leading to your house. Good Luck!
