Good money? Can we ask how much is considered GOOD in your books????
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
There is not one good answer for this sm
I love Smart Type. I used it in DOS and I use it in Word. I have used it for so long I know it like the back of my hand. I work in a Word client, and so ST works there.

Now, if you are on a wonky proprietary platform that is not a Word client, you can't use ST at all. Has to be Word (Extext, MedRite and MTWorld are Word clients).

Much as I love Smart Type, I can't give anyone a full recommendation to go and buy it. I would say that over time it has limited my options since I only apply for jobs that have a Word client platform. I don't have evidence that it has severely hurt me because I have had wonderful luck working for wonderful companies. I am in Extext now and I could not be happier...BUT

If you are using Bayscribe and whatnot, Smart Type is useless to you. It won't work in Emdat, ChartNet...to name a few. Now, InstanText WILL work in these platforms, as will ShortHand. It makes much more sense for someone starting out with an Expander to choose one of these two, not Smart Type. They are much more flexible and the whole point of buying an expander is to carry it with you from job to job.

As for a glossary, you can see the post below this one that gives a link to another site where Mary Morkin's entire glossary/library is written out and see how to put things in. This seems very laborious to me and you are welcome to email me for my expander library. I have copies of it for ShortHand, InstanText and Smart Type. Tell me your format and I'll send it to you. It started out as Mary Morkin's list linked below, and has had about 7000 to 8000 added to it over the last 10 yrs. I can't charge you for it (wouldn't anyway) because it isn't all mine and most of it is on the internet for free. I can just save you time.

Feel free to email me with any questions you might have about expander stuff. I don't know everything by any means, but I know other people who might know what I don't.
So you already knew answer? Good

Good Question... answer inside.. sm
My husband's exwife retained a free attorney.. two of them in fact, one after the other.. They agreed to take her case pro bono.. why? I don't really know.. maybe they get a tax break for taking free cases. Apparently she just kept calling attorneys telling her "story", got them to feel sorry for her or something.. she claimed abuse falsely and is the worst case of verbally poisoning her children this county has ever seen.. she ended up kidnapping the children after spending time in a psych facility, she served time but pled to a lesser charge to avoid deportation to Canada, her home country. She is manipulative and nasty.. she no longer has custody of her children and doesn't abide by the court rules to even get her supervised visitation anymore. Such a winner! Why would any attorney defend such a person? Good Question...
Very good answer. I don't sit in the freezer to transcribe
so I don't need a heated keyboard.
I don't think you'll get a good answer from the info...
you provided. It varies too much from location to location.

I've seen some MTs on here that say inhouse in their area make less than $10 an hour. Our local starts newbies (providing they pass the tests) at $16.79 an hour.
looking for GOOD money

Are there ANY companies out there who will pay you what you are worth?  I've got 5+ years experience and only getting 7 to 8.5 cpl offered.  It's not a question of whether or not my work is good or bad, it is definitely good.  I have read where so many of you are making much more money than that and I would like to know WHERE to find such a job?  I would even be happy getting paid by the hour at this point (if it's enough that is).  I simply want paid what I'm worth for all my hard work! TIA!!!

Good money
You say you have 5+ years experience-- how would you like to be making that after 25+ years???? I would like to know where to find such a job as well.
good money
Well, I worked 60-70 hrs per week last year, with 2 weeks vacay and made 113,000+ - in my eyes radiology IS the best paying.
Finally a good answer to this person's question--sm
I am always stunned at how insensitive and rude some people can be in their answers and some of those below prove that to be the case. Try to remember that not everyone is like that, although it seems to be otherwise sometimes, on this board. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do!
That's definitely good money. I wish I could make that much.
I'm making about $1,400 a MONTH working 25-30 hours per week. ESLs, run out of work often, lousy platform. What's the point any more? I definitely need to pick up some local accounts and never work for another national.
Oh man....that is NOT good...how do you make any money?

Four. And they make very good money.
But I get your point. But you asked!
Depends on what you think good money is too : )

I think good money is 50K a year.
x
Oh, but I make really good money
so I did not understand where this was coming from. You see, I have no children at home, only 2 of us, no bills, I only work part because that is all I want but still bring home about $1500.00 every 2 weeks, so no need to feel sorry. I said I type fast.
Any money is good today sm
Take what you can to make ends meet and then switch when a better offer comes along, just don't burn bridges. Watch Jim Cramer, he says work at the Dollar Store if you can. I believe this will pass myself, just hang in there!
LOL and you call that good money?

I used to make really good money.
Anywhere from $28-50 per hour. Same few dictators, lots of templates and Expander usage, pay averaged out to be $.12 per line. I only wanted to work part-time, but the company would have worked me full-time. One particular doctor was so easy, I could do 400+ lph for him. He only had maybe an hour of work per day. Voice recognition has my job now. I've been unemployed for the past six months. But 537 lph consistently? I don't know about that. It would have to be the same pool of dictators and the MT's expander stats would have to be HIGH!
I would please like to know how you make good money at it.

Would you care to share your cents-per-line and lines-per-hour with us?  Roughly?

It would help alleviate the anxiety about it for some of us if we can hear from the horse's mouth (no insult intended) how this can be a good living for us.  Especially when there are so many things to slow us down like ESLs and poor dictators and bad sound.

Thank you.

K-Mart managers...Good money! Yes!
You have GOT to be kidding. I don't know about TODAY'S wages, but K-Mart, (or Safeway or Target, etc)managers USED to make GREAT money!! Yes, they DO prefer a 4-year business degree. These are/were not low paying jobs. Minus the business degree, one would have to play "work up" and it could take 20+ years to get up that high. The pay was about 4-6 times higher than a beginning school teacher last I knew.
Professional escort - money is good.

Is it possible to make good money working for someone else?
.
I think that is all attitude. I make very good money at MT.

35,500 a year is darn good money to me!!!!!
n/m
I knew they made good money...
I used to work for Kaiser in California. I really wanted to get on with the transcription department but there was NEVER an opening. I really miss working for Kaiser. I have not been able to find a hospital like that since I left. I now live in GA. The Kaiser here is not the same -- much smaller operation here. But I knew it, I knew it!

:)

I can make good money without overtime
I posted below but when I saw your post and it said crap- I type mostly VR and I work 8 hour days 4 days a week. I make at least $160.00 per day- add that up if I worked full 40 hour week or lordy if I worked overtime like years gone by. I get paid no more because of my years of doing this- work for national- the pay is low but I am fast. I just wanted to make about the same as when I worked in the office and set my goals accordingly.
I do VR, love it, make good money at it
and I have no idea why people who do not do, have not done, don’t plan on doing talk so much against it.
Depending on who you work for.... you can make good money

I usually average between $15-25 an hour doing VR. That is enough for me. I think it helps if you have companies that pay for footers, headers, spaces etc.. Good luck.

Well, good morning "Frank" are you counting your piles of money?

penned in at the moment because of unethical practices of MQ,

but in essence you have "given" us to your competition.  Your competition may have

been weakened by your siphoning off of MTs to work for MQ for a while

mostly because you became a monopoly, but with all the manpower

going to your broken competition and hospitals who are tired of being

manipulated with smoke and mirror business, see how good your name smells in

the medical field in about a year.

The resumes are flying like kites out there right now, can you see them?

Those are not clouds in your coffee those are your livelihood in the medical

field going up up up and away.

Enjoy your card game now.  I think the slight of hand way of doing business

has just about seen its day.

Any company that cannot ever give how a line is counted and show

the method an MT is paid - so that the MT can double check her "billing" is

not an ethical institution.  We don't work for the suprise we get in the bank at the end of 2 weeks of chasing work around your company,  we work for the

money.  We are business people just like you.  You, MQ, would not do business without a clear contract and yet you have expected MTs to

work on a line count that is by YOUR FORMULA which you can't share!  How insane is that?

I have been around awhile, and will last making good money as long as this field does.

That is a good offer. Pay is not that good at UIMC. Good luck! nm

They make darn good money at most large grocery stores
No, I don't tip them. If I thought they weren't getting paid hourly, then I might. I might tip someone who gave extra great service, like coming home and carrying them in the house for me, (j/k!) but most places where you are expected to tip, people just expect the tip and take it for granted anymore and don't always treat you well enough to deserve one!
My dad owns a dental lab - GOOD money, steady work, very tedious though
nm
Well actually it is a good business practice as far as saving money for share holders is concerned.
Why would a company pay for individuals who need health insurance, benefits, minimum wage, etc when they can ship work out of the country for half as much as is necessary to pay US worker. Not that it's a good thing for us, just that this is the way it is.
How about your local community college and save a heap of money & get just as good of an education?

I love procedures, colonscopes, EGDs, cardiac caths - this stuff earns me the good money, ESL or no!

Also LOVE LOVE ESCRIPTION and make good money but...
Can I ask how you sit there for 8 hours. Lately, I'm having a motivation problem. When I focus, I can rack up the lines, but lately, I get so easily distracted. My mind wanders and I struggle to get my lines. Any tips on how you stay productive who do you work for?? I work for Transcend.
Agree with other poster.. good price..good service
I definitely think they are one of the best out there. We also have been talked through issues over the phone and also had a warranty in which they came out and fixed it right at our home. My only complaint..and I am sorry for saying this.. but... when you call their customer service 9 out of 10 times...you get someone who barely speaks English and I just hate that. I think that is true of a lot of customer support centers these days, ironically they are rarely American anymore. I am not prejudice at all. I just find it frustrating to call in for help and the help you get barely understands you and you do not understand them, thus making the experience very frustrating..
Expensive is right -- around $300 per credit hour! But they do have a good rep. Good luck! nm

I believe Pilates is good for shaping and strength, but you still need some cardio for good fat

Maybe try to find a good web site to refer to! Good luck NM

Good for you. Sounds very interesting and a good chance of pace - sm

but I live in the northeast and not much need for that where I live.  I also live in a small town so that limits my options.  I have spent the last couple of years as a substitute teacher to supplement my MT job and just completed 4-1/2 months as a long term sub which I enjoyed and was a change of pace from MT.  The only problem is as a sub or ed tech you only get paid during the school year so I would have to keep my MT job for summers and school vacations.  With the way things are going in the MT world I hate to rely solely on that.  I don't want to find myself without any job whatsoever.

Thanks for all the responses.
