Is this Holiday a major one? Clinics and offices closed?

I guess I am out of it.  How big of a holiday is this?  All the kids home from school today?  Post offices and banks closed?  Seems rather quiet work-wise.  Wondering if I should start cleaning the house or keep staring at the no jobs to do in my queue.

Thanks!

Federal holiday, banks and federal offices closed, but
schools and everything else open here.
I get .135/.13/.16/.195 direct from hospitals or doctor offices.
.
I am an IC and my accounts are clinics and doctor's offices

So I have weekends off unless the docs dictate late on Friday, in which case I have the choice of working late on Friday or getting the work done over the weekend.

With clinic work, you don't have the constant flow that you have with a hospital. You can't work harder or longer hours to make more money. There is a specific amount of work, and when it's done, that's it. Your income will fluctuate. But if you're willing to put up with that - you can have your weekends off.

If you are that slow, why don't you stop in some local doctor's offices, pt, chiropractic, etc
do their backlog?  That has always kept me extremely busy.
I did that with 2 kids with time mgmt and a high school girl who babysat 3 days a week after school
nm
I don't have kids, but my Mom was from the "old school," and still had everyone, kids inclu

call her by her first name.  The little neighbor girl next door from the time she could speak called her Aggie (my mom's first name), and they were great buddies until the day my mom pased away.

I don't think there really is much in a name, but more in the respect you are given and the way you are treated.   Personally, I kind of cringe inside when someone calls me Ms. Anything or God forbid, "maam" (makes me feel like Methuselah!) ... I'm always just plain Merrie.  :-)

But, as someone pointed out, to each his own.  If you want to be addressed a certain way, you have that right, and people should respect that.  I'm glad you corrected the child ... hope it "sticks."

Don't know how many kids in your school..sm

when my child was in high school there were 3000 kids - 2 security officers and perhaps one cop (big huge city) - NOT ENOUGH TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN.  Guns and knives were waiting with perp kids across the street from the public school buses, near the city buses....lots of knifings.......pulled my kid out and had her finish up elsewhere....where they did care about kids.......

Like I said elsewhere - if they (authorities) don't care about our kids, they don't care about our/their future either.......

:(((

have your kids gone back to school yet? if so, where are you at...
if not, when do they go back and where are you at?  This is strictly out of curiosity, everyone, no ulterior motives here! I'm in GA and mine went back yesterday...think it's WAY too early to go back.  They were only out for nine weeks!
No way would my kids be in regular school
It was bad enough years ago when I was in public school, but nowadays with all the drugs, sex, guns, knives, etc., in school, there is no way any kids of mine would be in a public school. I remember my study hall when the kids were totally out of control and the teacher was afraid of them-- it sure isn't any better now. If I could not afford a private school, you'd better believe they would be home schooled.
Kids schedules outside of school....sm

It's amazing to me how many parents push their kids to the extreme with extracurricular activities.   I saw a cousin this weekend and her 2nd grader is taking 4 dance lessons (4-1/2 hours a week), an acting class (1 hour)  is in some special gifted program that meets 1 hour after school each week and is in the church kid's choir on Wednesdays.   This means this 7-year-old has 7-1/2 hours of extracurricular activities scheduled.

I told her that my 6-year-old chooses 1 activity to participate in outside of church kids choir (meets on Sunday) and that's all she does.

What about your kids if you have them?  If you have your child scheduled in a lot of things aren't you worried that they will burn out?  I've recently read stories that a lot of kids that are overscheduled are getting depressed and I can see why.

As long as you have someone with the kids after school and can

I can't wait for school to start either, and I don't even HAVE kids!! nm
xxxx
I don't need to know anything about it. My kids functioned fine in school
and let them have friends of their own choosing rather than manipulate their lives for them.
I do not know about her school but next Tues. when my kids start the first day they get out at 9:50
x
Absolutely would - however, I have to wait until my 2 kids are out of school
and off to college! I always wanted to be a traveling Transcriptionist with K-Force. I have 3 more years to wait and off I will go to a traveling transcription position.

I, however, love change and get bored fairly quickly. So, I would prefer the shorter assignments from place to place - 3 years is too long in one place for me!

Good luck to you!
Private Christian school is where my kids go.
nm
I believe it is next Monday, the 19th, as the kids have off school for it.

POLL - Are you read for your kids to go back to school? (sm)
Yes and no is the answer for me.  I love them home with me (11 and 13), but am ready to have the nice quiet house to myself for work.
Driving my kids to school. Heard it on the radio, Bob and Tom. sm
I never heard them be more serious than that day.  The whole day is still bright in my mind.  I remember everything that happened, where I was and what I did.  I will never forget it.
Our school has good scores but my kids have never been stressed

Probably depends on the teachers and the corporate culture at your school.

2000 lines everyday but one since my kids went back to school.
I can finally get back on a routine and get some work done. Now, if I could just stay off of MTstars! LOL.
No, usually it's just winding up as all the kids bring home crud from school.
The 4th of July is slow.  Christmas is never slow for me.
The kids' "holiday" programs at school were full of African and
Hanukkah music, but there wasn't an African or Jewish person in the gymnasium. Everything else was nondenominational. What I want to know is why the minorities have the majority vote? Shouldn't there be an equal amount of Christmas music?
Me, too. I told my kids that since they're not in school and I'm working two jobs
just to try to keep the utilities on, they get to do chores. Don't even get me started on holiday stress. My extended family sent me gift cards, so I'm using those to buy for the kids. I even offered to pay them $5 an hour for cleaning so they'd have Christmas money. Instead, what are they doing? Watching TV in their pajamas still. That's OK. I'm about to go unplug all the electronics in the house and give them a big chore list with NO pay.
Well, 1 day back to school for the kids, and now they come hom with a stomach virus! Geez.

How frustrating - 1 day in school and now a "bug".  We had this in our house before the holidays.  Everyone in the family had a turn with it, and now again!  I think antiseptic and antibacterials are needed in these schools.   Can't afford to be down for even 24 hours!

Just needed to vent my frustration here - my poor kiddies!

My sons are born again too and their wives can't leave the house, home school the kids, no tv,
and if my DIL wanted to work, it is out of the question. One of my sons just believes in having babies and having babies. They now have 5. I divorced his dad and apparently his dad taught them this is the American way. I just feel so bad for both my sons' wives. They both are born again and both live their life that way.
Honestly, I send my kids to public school. They've never had a belly ache either.

must you be so full of yourself?

POLL: Home School vs. Charter School vs. Public School vs. Priv ate School...
Pros and cons of each too. I have two little ones that will be starting school soon and I would like opinions on all. Thanks in advance! :)
When the kids started school I wanted a job in my home town. A hospital clerk position (sm)
came open. You started compiling charts, making copies, etc. Then I was promoted after a few months and began learning transcription and did that part of the day. Then a few months later they taught me coding and abstracting and I did that part of the day. It was a great learning experience to learn things from the bottom up. Needless to say, I am an old dog here who has been doing this more than 25 years now.

Veteran MT's
I don't know if you read my first post wrong or not, but I am still currently in school.  So I have been getting mostly 96, 97's on my tests.  I am almost done with my course.  So I haven't worked yet, but I was just trying to get an idea of how it is out there in the "working world." I don't usually make big errors either, mostly punctuation or grammar. EX:  subject/verb agreement. I wonder how often do the companies really look at that? From everyone's experience out there, do more dictator's like you to do strictly verbatim vs. editing? Thanks!
Question for Veteran MTs

Just had a question for you all.  I am almost done with my course, and hoping to get a job soon thereafter.  Does it just depend on the person how well we get that 98% on-the-job? I mean, how long it takes us to consistently achieve that.  I am usually about 97 right now, so I am hoping it won't take me much longer! How often are you usually (on average) reviewed at work and what about grammar, punctuation, etc? Does it just depend on the company? What happens if you are below 98? Thanks for all responses!

This is for the Veteran MTs (30+years)

When exactly did this business start deteriorating?  Was it after it became home-based.......when the MTSOs took over........when more ESLs physicians infiltrated.....or when?  You were there when it was good and have witnessed the insidious destruction.

I am just curious if you had an uh-oh moment/gut feeling when you realized that the gravy train was over.

Our refineries are closed
Our refineries to make gas are located in the gulf coast area. They were evacuated by the major oil companies on Saturday and Sunday and now they are caught up in the same damage as everyone else. Long lines and high gas prices because no one is currently manufacturing gasoline to supply those of us east of the Missippi, making what we have left from before the storm quite precious.
closed captions!
I put the TV on mute, but with closed captions on while I type. I hear with my ears, but read the tv with my eyes. I amaze people with this - and have been doing it for a decade!
closed caption
Thank you very much for the info.  Guess I'll stick with my MT career....but may still look into other avenues.  :)
closed pneumothorax?
Closed pneumothorax is air entering from the lung. Open pneumothorax is air entering from the outside.
This thread is closed. (sm)
I do want to comment that it is not being closed due to comments by the original "Mary" poster. It is, however, being closed because of everyone else's responses.

If you don't like the direction a thread is moving or disagree so strongly that you cannot make good contributions to the subject matter at hand, simply refrain from posting. It will die down, take a different direction, etc.

A thicker skin needs to be grown here. Everyone has their own opinion. It doesn't mean everyone will always agree. Threads can even get intense but they don't have to dwindle to personal insults.

heaven should be closed to most IRS agents

As soon as possible, talk to an attorney who specializes in this. Ask them if you can file Chapter 13 bankruptcy. In many cases, you can ultimately pay up to 10% of a past owed date.

While this is being haggled in the courts, you can send money, or not. You will have the protection of the federal government, who will handle another branch of the federal government.

Just never miss a single payment to the courts.

IMO, a thread is closed when it is obvious
that nothing new is added to the OP and it deteriorates into a 'troll', unjustified insults, foul language and just tit for tat, going in circles.

True, as the moderator pointed out, it is not moderated for 'niceness.' but the post has to be civil. One can make a stronger point with politeness than with disrespect.
I am considering CART or closed captioning..
But I wonder that after transcribing for so many years, will my fingers be able to learn the theory needed to use the equipment. I would like to do the real-time captioning, as from what I have read, pays the best. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or know anyone in this field?
The cost of running a private school or any school is expensive....
Why do you think public schools are so run down and can't find good teachers?  Because the government and people to not put forth the effort or $$$$ to improve the educational system.
"edit my reports with eyes closed"? what has that got to do with anything?
i don't live in a cave. i have a circle of local friends and family. i don't need an e-mail from a supervisor from gawd knows where to tell me i'm doing a good job. i'm doing a good job as evident by my paycheck twice monthly and my friends who want to spend time with me.

Now about this phrase - "I've been doing this over 10 years, independent and believe me I could probably edit your reports with my eyes closed my dear" WTF is that all about?
"edit my reports with eyes closed"? what has that got to do with anything? -
What are you rambling about about and could you PLEASE address the question asked of you in my TWO posts.

"edit my reports with eyes closed"? what has that got to do with anything?

WTF does this mean?
that was a judgemental and closed-minded comment

I closed my Delta Skymiles account. I won't fly with
them any more. Besides that, they tried to kill me and about 200 other people during one flight. Dang near crashed the plane and gave us all heart attacks.
closed captioning and court reporting
You should still consider it. If you are young enough to invest 4 to 5 years of school and entry experience, it may well be worth it. It certainly pays well, double to triple what medical transcription pays. Look into it.
I looked into the closed-captioning thing, and - sm
unfortunately (and quite OBVIOUSLY, if you ever see them in places like the gym, etc.), they are pretty much going to voice-recognition.

It's pretty funny reading all the misunderstood words VR does on TV! At least it makes the nightly news somewhat entertaining!

I had a friend go into court-reporting at the same time I went into MT. She tried to convince me to join her, but I (stupidly) picked MT because I knew I could get a job in only about 6 months while still working, whereas she was a full-time student and said that although you can learn it in a couple years, it takes a few more to really get up to speed, and start breaking into the job market.

So, let's see. That was back in 1975. She's still a court reporter, works when she wants, has good security, makes good money, put her kids through college, etc. And I don't have squat. Now I'm kicking myself for being so short-sighted and impatient back when I had a chance to get into a good middle-class line of work, instead of this __________! (Fill in the blank).
