They've been using q.i.d., etc. for decades that I know of
and see if you can name one person who had an adverse reaction because someone transcribed that abbreviation in a report. Get over yourself.

The reason the AAMT changed the abbreviation as well as a lot of other ridiculous horse puckey they change and will continue to change is so they can sell a new edition to their Book of Style. PERIOD

You've gotta be kidding me if you believe that baloney.
Wait until you've been there six months and if you've improved
quality and quantity, I'd say go ahead and ask.  Otherwise I'd say annually...  good luck
just wait, i'm sure they'll get to all of us
that is how some of the nastiness starts on this board, too many rumors and not enough facts. When MQ calls you, if you want you can post your facts, don't rely on others for their info
I'll probably wait until January...
and see what havoc is wreaked on my pay - but at this point there is just so much wreaking already...
I guess you'll have to wait for the TV version then

You know what they say, if you don't like the weather in Ky - wait 5 minutes, it'll change - i

nice to see rain and maybe they will release our water restrictions, of course, now I don't need to water my lawn but maybe washing my car would be nice.

I do. I guess I'll wait a few mintues before disconnecting from the VPN
after I close out EXText.  I guess I'm just in too big of a hurry to shut down when my shift is over!
I'll wait a few days, week or so, no hassle, no BO to smell, it will be worth SM
the extra money.
August 24th. Can't wait for those bigger paychecks I'll get when I have fewer interuptions!

I've had people tell me that I would need to wait to have my questions answered until I worked...

for them.  What???  How would I know if I want to work for them if they don't answer my questions.

Go figure.

If I've said it once, I'll say it again, do NOT take a course
Many companies offer coding courses with national certification as the end result. There is a clause in HIPAA (HIPPA..I'm too tired right now to care to get it right) that stops just short of requiring national certification of all coders but with the coder putting their education and professionalism on the line with jail time and monetary penalties for miscoding, ask yourself if you are willing to save a few bucks and then not be able to get a job.

Been there, don't that, got the certification and keep the costly yearly CEUs (way more than to keep CMT) to keep it that way.

IMO, AHIMA is pompous and is akin to AAMT whereas AAPC stays true to the AMERICAN coding profession and was in fact the original and only national certification organization until AHIMA realized how much $$ they were missing out on by not offering national certification.
Thank you both. I'll look at both. I've
been in a serious panic with having to find a new job and get several new programs.
I know I've said this before and I'll say it again
I had a doctor that I work for tell his residents (student doctors) that they should transcribe reports for at least five years before entering med school because they would be more apt to answer the questions being asked.  The patient being examined was my mother.  The doc was asking the questions for the student docs to answer, and I was answering them faster then they could.  This is not at all to brag.  This comes with the territory of having experience in this field.  I'm sure most can attest to knowing exactly what the patient will be diagnosed with and recommended before the doc even has a chance to complete the dictation.  I was actually very flattered to say the least, but you know what, I kind of have to agree that maybe med school should include a year of transcription because I think that would give the docs that do not speak clearly a taste of what we get each and every day!  God bless....   Good luck no matter what you decide, and I wish you well.
I've said it before and I'll say it again!

There are a lot of screens to go through and hopefully you're getting the correct patient account number and all of that jazz!  Good luck with it, but I would request an hourly rate for Meditech work if I were to do it again after 15 years of that stuff I put up with using it!

From what I've heard, you'll have fun! (nm)

At 3 decades in, I'd more than likely

...hate most everyone by that time, not just QA.  lol

Probably have to change my name too - Miserable&MoodyMT.

I see this whole discussion has gone and blown up into a battle of MT vs QA.

I'm an ME on SR part time, so I know how involved/time consuming it can be with editing reports.  ME is a step lower than QA editor, but basically the same type of job, minus any MT feedback.  Sometimes it isn't as simple as filling in a blank, especially when you know you are dealing with a novice, or in my case, SR couldn't understand what it was hearing and put anything in the report.  Just ended my night off with a horrid 64-line report that I would have gotten through quicker had I typed it myself and deleted what was there.

Decades as MT
Started out in 1965 putting carbon paper between sheets for radiology reports, went through IBM mag cards doing medical records, IBM Selectric, Lanier teeny-weeny screen computers, and on and on . . .  Didn't mean to "dis" you.  I think it was a generation gap thing : )  I started out making $1.25 an hour, so $20-$30 an hour now seems wonderful to me.  Best wishes on re-entering the field, and I mean it sincerely!
I'll take your hubby. I've got one just like him and another one won't bother me... except.

my hubby will leave 1 knife, spoon, or fork on the table and it gets buried under the mail he never reads. He will take his shoes off at the door if the ground is dry outside, and keep them on if the ground is wet, snowy, muddy, etc.

He will make himself a sandwich, put everything away EXCEPT  the mayo, leave the bread tie on the table and twist the bread closed and fold it under. Oh, and the best thing.....he never, ever uses a paper plate for his sandwiches or snacks of chips, pretzels, etc. at the kitchen table. What falls on the floor stays on the floor.(sigh)

But, I feel lucky because he puts his dirty laundry in the hamper and carries the hamper out to the laundry room if he needs clothes, I fold his clothes and put them on his bed and he puts them away...on top of an open drawer, on top of the bureau, on top of a chair, etc.....I give up.

BTW, I'm with him 40 years and been trying to train him all those years. I did make a couple breakthroughs, but not much. So, ya gotta love 'em or leave 'em. I choose to keep him.

You are right, but you are a few decades too late --
Even if it did happen decades ago (an MT union), it would have done little good these days. Not to mention that some unions became more corrupt than the companies they were to protect the workers from.

Also--Have you heard about this new fangled thing called "offshoring?"

Ooooh, Let me tell you about it--It's an amazing process:

1. Over-paid, greedy corporate swines take great jobs from perfectly competent American workers.

2. The swines strip the jobs of all decent benefits/wages/perks.

3. The stripped down jobs are then doled out to low-wage, low-skilled "workers" in third-world countries at a small percentage of original base salaries.

4. The CEOs then stuff their already over-stuffed pockets with cash they save by hiring cheap labor and not paying decent wages/benefits.

5. The American workers are then left scurrying, collecting unemployment, looking for another job, considering going back to school or selling roses on the street corners, whatever works for them, to make their ends meet.

What a process!! Amazing!! So American, isn't it??

To try to form a union now would be a pointless, no-win situation (we are all too scattered, there is no-one to back us up (think money), there is too much money behind the American CEOs and Indian CEOs that could crush us).

Nice thought, but a little too little too late.

I would say find another career. It is never too late. I am in school now (entirely different field) with a woman in her mid 60s, and she has already had multiple job offers.

I have been trying to fight all of this offshoring for quite a few years now, but I am exhausted and have thrown in the towel and decided I am a valuable employee and have decided to move on and take my experience and skills with me.

Good luck to you in whatever you do.

I've been using it a few years now. It's pretty good. You'll get used to it. -nm

I've never tried it with sausage...I'll have to give it a shot!
/
I've said it before, and I'll say it again - animals know things people don't.
nm
I've said it before and I'll stay it again, there is absolutely no added worth to being a CMT.

It is a waste of nearly $300 and it serves little or no purpose.  You maybe get a penny more a line from a handful of services.  That's it.  Does it sound like it's worth it to you?

Furthermore, you'd be giving your hard earned money to an organization that advocates offshoring American MT jobs.  They even recently were asking American MTs to volunteer their time and pay their way on a $4000 trip to China to train the Chinese to take our jobs.

Then there is the whole problem with the ever-changing BOS.  Just when we learn their rules, they go and change them on us and make us all pay 90 bucks for the newest edition.

Uhem, sorry.  This subject tends to get me fired up.  The short answer would be -- No, it isn't worth it at all.

...not supposed to happen for a few decades, but those of us left
will be needing to really be adaptable and go ahead and learn all the new technology.

like this article says, we also did this to ourselves.

it really is to our benefit to learn the new technology. our biggest threat is not overseas after all, but right here in our own backyards...

funny, but all that will be left some day are service jobs...like you said, nursing. well, perhaps service jobs will have to start paying more as more college-educated people have to do them as well.

I see now MQ is trying to be the innovator. their merge with Philips Medical was just short of genius, really. if this pans out the way this article says, they will be front-runners...
For decades, a company benefit has been health insurance
along with retirement plans, paid holidays, PTO, etc. Only in the world of MT (and maybe Wal-Mart) are many companies not paying for these benefits.
EEEEEEEW! He was ugly decades ago and now he's ancient and uglier!

Just because you said a "doctor's office" that narrows it down.  No national work for private doctor's offices.  It is all acute care.  Just wait.  They will let you know how you are doing.

I use EXText with my current job and I've used at a couple of other jobs I've had. I've ne

used DocQscribe, but I have used Meditech, Cerner, Vianeta, the Precyse platform (I can't remember the name), Dolbey, and  Lanier platform I think was called Cequence (?).

Out of all the different platforms I have typed on, I have liked EXText the best.  In my opinion, it's very user friendly, easy to learn, and I really like ESP which is the built in abbreviation expander.  Plus it is very easy to create your own normals which I love.  My fingers literally never leave the keyboard because there are macro keys for everything.  You can use your mouse if you prefer or learn the function macros.  I love it.  I think I'm more productive on EXText than with any other platform.

I have two IC contracts right now. I recently went back to a job I had quit earlier in the year to work for the other company I am still working for.

The newer job has 80% ESLs. I transcribe OP notes primarily and I can fill in other work types as the opportunity arises. I am frustrated with this particular situation. After 6 months, I am making less money and working longer hours. I am past the learning curve and I should be doing better, at least in the number of hours I am spending doing the job. We have run out of work for 24 hrs at a time at least 5 or 6 times since December 1, and in November it was more than that. I have a friend who worked for this company as well and she was having similar difficulties. The only thing that we can figure is that they are shorting us line count some way, because after 6 months at it, it should be easier/faster/more money, but it is less and less every single pay period. It is not a nice thing to accuse a company of doing, but it SEEMS that way to us. I am fed up with being expected to type every single OP note that comes in 24/7 and meeting the 6 hr TAT for them on weekends, evenings, holidays, wee hours of the morning...

I took back a job I held for 2-1/2 yrs. The team leader has changed and this gal thinks that I should be on call 24/7 for whenever she has work. I might have some at 7 a.m., or perhaps not until 6 p.m. or later. I can't plan my personal life and between these two IC situations, I find that I am not eating on a daily basis, not showering on a daily basis and not sleeping more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. I have lost weight and I don't feel very well. I woke up today with a rip roaring head cold (my first in nearly 8 yrs) and it has already moved to bronchitis and I am expecting pneumonia by the weekend because I develop it very easily. I already have deep pain in my back.

Yes, I should call in sick tomorrow, but I really can't take the fallout. The job I took back I am covering for another gal who wanted vacation over the holidays and if I have to call in sick, the team leader will call me and pitch a fit about how this is my responsibility. It IS my responsibility, I did say I would do it, and I will do it, despite being quite ill. In the past, when I worked for this company, they would not allow me to call in sick for a "cold" without a doctor's note. I worked through many illnesses with them and only called in sick when I developed West Nile Fever and while I was sick for over a month, I only called for my last 12 reports one day when I could no longer see the computer screen because my head hurt.

The problem is that yes, many MTs lack work ethic. They don't take their responsibility seriously. This is not a work as you please career, not even for an IC. I can see the MTSO's point of view, I truly can. Like finding experienced, reliable and capable MTs, for the MTs who are these things, finding a company will treat you like a human being is equally difficult. I sit here, feeling lousy and like I am an utter slave labor with no consideration whatsoever. I know that my work needs to be done, but when I am this sick it is better that someone else do it for the sake of the work, for accuracy and for speed of getting it out. I know that I am needed, but to be the MT these companies need me to be, I also need to look after my own health.

I will also mention that when I have asked for vacation, I have been approved for the time, but the MTSO queues up my work and calls me then I am not on the system getting it done. I have told them I had been approved for time off, but the MTSO didn't schedule anyone to cover for me and I am told to get on work, vacation or no, if I want to keep my job.

Thus, I work 24/7/365 and have for years. I work sick, I work when I am in pain (I have an AI disorder), I work exhausted from staying up all night covering for others who are allowed to call in sick and have vacations when I can't have either. I work having no health insurance and not being able to afford the $125 a month to buy some with a high copay so I can see a doctor. I work without breaks for breakfast, lunch or dinner and I sometimes come close to having an accident because if I leave my desk to go to the little girls' room I get nasty calls about where I am at and what I am doing.

Many MTs are mistreated, and I am one of them.

Sometimes it's best to wait, sometimes not
I guess it all depends on the person and the mood.  I've done both.  We most always have more than one pet, and this last time when Sally died (150 pound part St. Bernard and part mastiff), the house was so empty without a dog.  We only had my cat left.  So we waited about 1 1/2months and finally couldn't stand it so we went to the pound and got Bubba, part bloodhound and part German shepherd.  He would love a "sibling" but I had to put my old cat through another change just yet.  Soon, though.
I can't wait either!!
He starts back the 24th of this month, so only 7 more working days for him to be home with me-I love having him home but he is only going to be in first grade so he gets a bit antsy but luckily I start at 5:00 a.m. so am pretty much done by noon or so.  I can get so much more work done when he is not asking for a snack every 5 minutes -gotta love em though.
Can't wait, but
I haven't heard anything yet!
Wait a second...JK, JJ...Which one is it???...

At least if you don't want to post as a former something, don't change names in the middle of the thread.  Someone might get bent over it,     and we sure don't want anyone getting upset over something trivial now, do we???

Wait and see what happens.

My DH has sole custody of SD11 (and SS7). She hasn't shown much interest in make-up yet, but I'm sure it's coming! We were visiting a friend the other night and SD11 met the next-door-neighbor girl who is 14 and dresses gothic. SD told me about it and all her skull stuff. I just told her she looks so pretty in her pink and I hope she keeps on looking her cute self. She agreed! Whew, for now!
Wait a second...
What I am saying is that the ones in gated communities ARE the guilty ones. THEY are the ones who could afford and had the means to be prepared. THEY are the ones in the lines!!

The ones who have no money or means suffer at the expense of the ones who DO have the ability to prepare.

That is what totally baffles me is that why didn't more people prepare!!!???

Wait!
I'm sorry, but no, I haven't heard from this other company.  I would encourage you to wait for them or apply elsewhere.  MQ is in a state of change right now and nobody who works for them is happy right now.  There are some big changes afoot as of 1/1/06 and everyone is speculating what will happen (MedQuist NEVER tells us what is going on - we learn everything about this company by rumors and posting on this board - think twice about going with a company that keeps their employees in the dark!)  If the first company doesn't call you back, there are plenty of other GOOD jobs, but I think you would be making a terrible mistake to go with MQ.  Many, many MTs are LEAVING MQ right now.
He says he'd want me to wait until they are both 18 - sm
They are 5 & 7 now (I'm 40). He's afraid of my marrying a child molester if they were young. I told him remarrying would be the last thing on my mind and I doubt I'd be running out and doing it any time soon (or even date) should he died any time soon. (he's 46).
