not sure about you, but we have several wild animal care and education centers...
The best way to start is to volunteer.

We have like Messinger Woods and Hawk Creek around here, like animal sanctuaries, where they have owls, eagles, deer, all sort of animals they need to take care of. You can always visit one and ask questions. I would love that, too, only I can not get my boyfriend interested. I would love to even volunteer.

Sounds funny, but what about a zoo...same thing, you can volunteer at first, see if you like it, and I believe those positions offer decent pay...?

You always type it the way the client or your boss, company tells you to. And you are right, ibuprofen should not be capatalized unless at the beginning of the sentence because it is the generic name of a drug. As far as the BOS is concerned...there are many people that believe that book is the Bible as far as transcription is concerned. Again, it all boils down to the way your client or company wants the information transcribed. The BOS is not always followed to the letter.
bottom line
nobody likes to see the officials produce the outcome of the game.... Of course they have to call things that are obvious, but in a championship game you cannot call the "iffy" calls and potentialy change the outcome of the game. Just let the players PLAY!!
Bottom line -
It can make a WORLD of difference how you feel about this profession depending on the accounts you have. I used to have nice accounts and made tons of money because I also got paid a huge line amount. I now have really tough accounts and do not get paid as much as I previously did. I work on four different accounts with all different specifics, tons of backround noise, grunting ESLs, you name it. I also have nearly no contact with the company itself, unless they need something from me. They then have no problem with calling me up.
Bottom line.......sm
You need to decide if this account is worth the aggravation. If it pays well and you make a decent wage monthly, then you need to put up with the aggravation.

If this account is not worth your time, then let it go.

If you are an IC, you can not get involved in the politics of the office or any other "petty" nonsense.

From the business owner perspective, only you can decide if the account is prosperous for you or not.

All this stuff about missing notes is aggravation and time consuming. Time is money. Is this account worth the headaches that come along with it.

Believe me, not all accounts are like this and some accounts are worse than this.

Again, the question becomes.."does this account make you enough money a month that you are happy with?"

Only you can answer that...Going back and forth with the office staff about missing notes is not the answer.

Ask yourself....Is it worth the effort to negotiate your contract under new terms, and if so, will you be happy with the new terms, and will these new terms eliminate your problem of missing notes?

As an observer.....the answer is probably "NO". But good money to me and good money to you may be different.

I have been working in this field for 35 years and hope to continue. I work mostly VR, some straight. My pay is low, 4 VR and 8 straight. I only work part-time now because am at a point where that is sufficient. Can anyone tell me what their final pay is for a week's worth of work? If I worked full time it would be at least as much as I made in the 80s working inhouse. I know the pay is less than we made years ago but I figured out how much I needed to type to make X amount of dollars and that is what I do each day.

and all of her corrections, most of them were right on....sorry to say that to you.....but it's p.o. b.i.d. and 82-year-old and all that good stuff.  If they want you to EXPAND GERD that's in your favor.....you get more characters which equates to more line counts.  But bottom line, it is what the client wants and all the clients are different with different things they want......hence why you think there is no consistency.  Best of luck!!!

Errors in transcribed reports can and do lead to adverse outcomes for patients. Are we as MTs pushed to be perfect ?? Heck yes - the documentation we help produce will impact a patient's care not only in the current admission or office visit but in the future when other docs are asking for copies of records. Medication errors, diagnosis errors can haunt a patient for years to come. No one can be 100% perfect all the time, but the goal is to strive to that - take the feedback as constructive criticism - learn from your mistakes and always consider the patient's needs above your own need for validation. It's not about you, it's about the patient.

Well, bottom line is money

If the administration at the hospital are feeling financial strain, rather than cutting back on their own 6 figure salary, they seem to think hmmmm....how many people can we get rid of and get the job done at a cheaper rate."  At least that is what happened at a hospital I worked it.  They were 16 million in debt and there had to be some lay offs and others that were left took the slack.  They don't sacrifice, they expect everyone else to work harder and get paid less. 


It is not just us.  H works for a car dealership.  People are leaving and are not getting replaced.  The owner expects the workers that are still there to pick up the slack with no raises either.  When the finance manager left, the new car manager filled in.  He went and asked the owner for a raise because he is having to work 2 jobs now.   The owner told him no, he is just filling in.  The man said, no filling in is 2 or 3 weeks, this has been a year.  The owner said, well, we don't really need a manager, we need you just to sell cars.  In other words, the guy got demoted.  After being there 10 years, he left.  H's boss is going in after the first of the year to try to get them all a raise.  I have to put it to him, he is brave to do that after what happened to the other guy.   


I guess the bottom line is
can I make a decent living doing mostly VR at 4 cpl?
Can I actually just buy sliced bread and line the bottom?...

It is all about the bottom line. One of the largest transcription sm
companies is Cbay and they are pricing everyone else out.

I have spoken to several doctors and many other people about this issue and no one, and I mean no one, gives a hoot who types the report up.

This is about dollars and cents and it is not going away.
Bottom line is they need the worked turned around

quickly.   Most companies overhire and one of those reasons is because there are lots of MTs  who don't work their usual schedule, take a day off w/o notice, etc., so they have to have extra to cover for that.   My company does their best not to overhire, but at times that means we have to work like dogs because there is so much work.   I think some companies also offer incentives/benefits based on production and if you can't reach them they don't have to compensate you for them.   There are times that work is just slow and a company can't give you work they don't have, but not being able to make any lines is a consistent issue then there is a problem.  I would call your supervisor and ask for a backup account and/or look for another position.

given the chance.  I re-read my previous post to you and I sounded like a b*tch and I wanted to apologize.  You sound like a very positive person who takes criticism and not so pleasant advice very diplomatically.


If your problems with your boss are more of a personal nature, rather than the quality or quantity of your work, I would maybe go over her head.  You already have an adversarial relationship with her anyway, so why not get it on record that you feel she is treating you unfairly?  Or maybe confront her yourself?  I would probably do the latter.  I'm not someone that can bite my tongue which probably explains why I work by myself at a computer all day rather than in customer service! 


Just an FYI, I actually am starting an in-house MT job at a hospital tomorrow!  I've decided that if they try to lay me off in favor of outsourcing, I'm just going to refuse.  I'm going say "nope, I'm sorry, I refuse to be laid off.  I'm going to get back to work now."  I wonder what they would do?

What do you think would be her chances of them going to VR? Do you think it will go poof and disappear? Do you think refusing to take lower wages makes the companies take notice and reverse to go back to the golden days when we had really good salaries? Be willing to bet that next paycheck most would go along with their companies going to VR rather than changing, going to a new job only to find out the same thing happens there.

Depends on what kind of line really
gross lines in my area are about 12 cpl, and I'm not sure about 65-character lines, but I think somewhere around 15-17 cpl.
getting cmt is kind of like getting a certificate for being an excellent top of the line blacksmith.

so what?  so you jumped through all the hoops, learned the trade and now it is obsolete.  but you got your little CMT to keep you warm and cozy?  employers are going to pay what they are going to pay (as little as possible) and that little certificate means nothing to them in the broader scheme of MT world as it goes into the VR and offshore world. 


oh but mr. national recruiter, i have a certificate and i should have 12 cpl for my skills and education....... bwaaaaahaaaaa. 


line counts doing acute care ????
just wondering, all these very high per day line counts, does this include acute care - discharge summaries, op notes, consults, GI tests, echos, etc.  Just curious.  I have been doing this a long time, mostly acute care, but some clinic, but I find that my acute care line counts are a lot lower than the clinic.  I would appreciate any tips.

Flexible schedule and reasonable line rate, at least 11 cpl for acute care!
I am not real "needy". No benefits as IC, just need flexible schedule due to very active family, and expect a good line rate. In return, I will go above and beyond what is expected to meet TAT and quality!

Is it harder to reach your daily line count on acute care or clinic?

Kinship care versus foster care/adoption
Having been placed in a position where I now have custody of my 3 YO granddaughter and going through the legal system, I sought an online network of relative caregivers for children. I would encourage you, especially since you are in Georgia, that if you take any children into foster care with the idea of adopting them, there is federal law that requires the state to take certain actions in a specific time frame. When a child is removed from it's bio parent(s), the state is required to investigate any possible relatives who can take the child before foster care is considered, but even before that, reunification with the parents is the priority. Once a child enters the system and is in the system for 15 out of any 22 months, the state is required to find permanent placement for the child.

The problem with this is that there are case workers who may favor a foster family and do not seek out relative care. I have a good friend in Georgia who had to fight all the way to the state level to get custody of her grandson after the child was placed from the hospital into a foster care home with the promise that the foster parents would be allowed to adopt. She has now adopted her grandson, but it was a long, hard battle to get the state to admit their own interests were placed above those of the child and/or family.

If you get a child placed through the state, please make certain there is not a relative who wants that child before you get your hopes up. The courts are now favoring return of children to relatives even after a child has spent years with a foster family who hoped to adopt them.

States get bonus federal funds by complying with the time lines and being able to close the case, so some states place children in foster care because it is easier than trying to locate relatives.

Didn't mean to go off on a tangent, but I can't imagine my sweet bella going to someone outside her family.
Education
Also, every other civilized country has a better education system than the U.S. We graduate people who cannot read and write. I only hire Canadian MTs by choice anymore, because with a mere high school equivalent education they're leagues ahead of their U.S. counterparts.

When we moved from Canada to the U.S. (I was a child), my siblings felt like they had jumped BACK 5 years in school and quickly became bored and disinterested, while they achieved straight As in Canada.

Education is not a priority here, yet we gripe when jobs go to more educated countries.

Again, I guess it comes down to our vote.

Healtchare and education are not priorities in this country.

SNAKES

Many people share misconceptions about snakes. In reality, the large majority of them are harmless, gentle creatures that provide valuable service in controlling rodent populations around our farms and homes.

The snakes most likely to be seen in our area are garter snakes and gopher snakes, both harmless. King snakes and rattlesnakes are encountered much less frequently. The gopher snake's superficial resemblance to the rattlesnake often creates problems for it, but they can actually be told apart fairly easily. Although the gopher snake will vibrate its tail, it has no rattles, the unique property of the rattler. The gopher snake also has round pupils in its eyes like ours, while the rattler's pupils are elliptical, or pointed like a cat's.


The rattler is the only snake to be avoided in California, and this is not difficult. When hiking or climbing, wear boots and avoid placing hands and feet in places where you cannot see. If you should encounter a rattlesnake or any snake, your best course of action is to back off and allow the snake a way to retreat, which they will generally quickly do. Should someone be bitten by what you believe to be a rattler, attempt to kill the snake if this can be done without delay and take it along to aid in identification. Immediately take the bitten person to the nearest hospital, where healthy people usually recover quickly from such a bite with treatment.


Most snakes are harmless and helpful, and should never be killed unnecessarily, as the benefits they provide are considerable.

This is my opinion of course, so slam me if you wish or agree with my beliefs. Our society has gone so "far out there" with regard to morals in regard to the welfare system for example. Our young women in this country, not all, but many (particularly the lower income areas) feel their most important goal in life is to have babies and get money from the government. They have multiple babies from different men and are not even sure who their children's biological fathers are. These kids grow up and continue the vicious cycle. In doing so, the lack of education that many U.S. citizens get is ridiculous. It does not take money to get a solid education, but many women (and men) choose the easy road with the welfare system. No government policies put a stop to this, which I believe is just a crush to the hard working and educated part of the population who are successful citizens in their lives. There may be poverty in foreign countries, but not by the citizens choice. India citizens, for example, are very intelligent and educated and willing to be successful in careers. No, I do not agree with outsourcing our work, and the company I work for does not outsource. My point is that standards and morals in many parts of the U.S. stink, for which I blame the lazy, uneducated people working the system, and the government policies that allow this to happen. (Yes, there are those on Medicaid who truly are disabled and need the support. I am not even referring to those individuals). The middle class should be rewarded for working hard, but instead the lower class just gets more and more given to them via support by the government. If this continues, our jobs will be significantly overtaken by foreign countries.
Where I am, if you have the education and
experience, it pays better than MT. Oddly enough, last I heard, no program could code as well as a person, and because profits are involved instead of harder- to-appreciate quality, those who hire have no choice but to care about quality when it comes to coding. The proof is all in the numbers. Put another way, MTs cost money, coders find money. But where I am, the education is stressed more also, and you have to work on-site for the hospitals here (last I heard).
Do you have any MT education, did you
get a certificate?  You need to start there first if not.  Otherwise you should list your resume on the various free job boards.

I could give you a run-down on my "education" but that is not the point here. I asked a question about something I had not dealt with before, and asked how other MTs handle it. I did not ask for personal comments or slurs.

Point them in the direction of a GOOD school.  I am talking one of the Big 3.  You get what you pay for.  I graduated from M-Tec 8 years ago and have been working from home ever since doing acute care.  When I did QA I saw successful graduates also come out of Andrews.  People from schools outside of the Big 3 were so ill-prepared it was impossible for them to keep a job.  They are the ones who come here begging for someone to give them a chance.  Many, many companies will waive the 2 years' experience requirement because the education received at these schools is that good.  I had recruiters banging my door down to test when I graduated.  Check out the good schools!
