That bubble will soon burst! I don't make 16 cents per line, and I have 10 years of experience in all specialties, acute care, ER, clinic...Ah, to remember the newbie days...I had that "go get'em" attitude. I miss those carefree days.
Would love to help newbies, I was one myself (way too long ago to admit to)...
but set hours might be hard to do, I'd want to know that I would have at least 3-5 hours a day with a newbie in order to make it worthwhile. If she learns and works out - raises of course. I've been there too!

I'd say you need a grip. This is exactly why fewer MTs are commenting on here
They get blasted and basically reprimanded for giving an opinion. How about some common courtesy.
I check no fewer than 5 websites or 5 google searches
often I go further than that, but I've been doing this a long time and get stumped a heckava lot less than I used to.

I basically search at least 5 different ways and check at least 5 websites before giving up. That's presumably after I've checked my own word books, of course.
I think employees should leave fewer blanks and certainly know all the place names
that an IC would be less interested in. And the employee should be diligent about area physician names that I wouldn't expect an IC to know as much about.

Experience on top, current experience first. Education second. Leave out ALL fluff.
Recruiters don't need your life story. They need to know if you can do the job. If you want, put your current employer, then state "I have 20 years in the profession doing....." Keep it simple; keep it clean. If you want to go into more detail, do it during the interview. A HUGE red flag is to see that you've worked for 10 different companies, for months at a time. I know that someone who has worked for the same company for 2 years or more is going to have some degree of loyalty and will work through issues rather than cut and run.

It's been the same here. No work or very very slow. I'm the complainer when the work is low though, but I don't usually complain on message boards. I'm the one that's calling the company looking for more work. I'm flexible and they're good to me and keep me going. I have to appreciate that!

Does anyone know of places
that hire people offshore to do data entry work.  I work as an MT, but am thinking about moving to another country in the next 5 years.  I do not believe in offshoring medical records, so I do not consider continuing with MT as an option.  I tried doing a search on Google, but have not found much after trying different queries.  Thanks in advance for all help!
Some places still use it, I use WP5.1 every day - sm
for 1 job, though they do want to convert over, but it is what the hospital uses. It is not hard to use and I have Stedmans's spellcheck and Smartype (the original) for it and you can macro your butt off with it; and very easy to use.

I think most places
want somewhat of a set schedule or a certain # of hours per week, be it FT or PT. However, a lot of companies offer split shifts and very flexible scheduling. Also, all work as a TAT - turn around time, so it has to be done in a timely manner. I suppose if you work for someone locally, this could be more flexible.

that give I raises.  If you are dependable, do what is asked and more, don't pick and choose your work types, learn how to do everything that comes across the board and don't complain (at least to your employer-haha), there are companies that reward you accordingly. 


I realize there are companies that do not reward and you have the choice to stay or go depending on your situation.  But there still are places that will pay for good, experienced MTs and pay very well!

I applaud your attitude towards mentoring (especially since I'm a student and crave that!). To hold employees that are worth having the employer would only benefit by training the way he/she wants the employee to work.

As a baby boomer, I think the majority of us will work well past the retirement age set forth by the powers that be. I don't see that my retirement funds will pay for me to live another third of my life unemployed. Not to mention, the need to feel productive that many of us have. MT is the answer, allowing many to work at home (or in our RV's - not that I'll get one, not my thing).

As far as education goes, some schools are most likely sub-par, in it for the money only. Some are developing, some are downright outstanding. However, even a student attending one of the 'lesser' schools might be worth mentoring. Perhaps they attend that school because of fund shortages (I know that's why I am), that does not mean the student is sub-par. Yes, I agree some are looking for an easy buck, but some are looking for a CAREER, not a dollar. I know that's my goal.

ok - I'm getting off my soapbox, and hoping someone someday will give me the chance to work and help others too, when I get enough experience!

Good luck in a field where our pay goes down each year, and our business costs soar. I received an e-mail that offered to transcribe my overflow for 3 cents a line. How can we compete with that? It seems the doctors just care about cheap labor instead of quality work....
It isn't that most of us have anything against newbies. sm
Just as in any field, when people have trained and worked hard to get where they are, they expect to be rewarded. Forlorn hope. As newer people come in, they are eager to learn, willing to take less money while they train. That means those of us that have been at it so long (18 years here) have to sometimes cut our prices to compete for the jobs. I won't even mention the off-shoring. Eighteen years experience means little to a company that only asks for two years. We do get bitter, not necessarily at the new people, but at the situation we're in.

People in all professions find this. New people come into teaching making as much as people that have been there 15 years. In other professions, a long-timer is replaced by someone new who works for much less. Do you think there isn't bitterness over this? The list goes on.

We all feel cheated, even those of us making a decent living, like me. Yes, I can make $16 an hour, but have to buy my own equipment, software, insurance, pay employment taxes, income taxes, Medicare tax, internet, long distance, etc. I'm lucky if I really make $8 an hour. Not much above working at WalMart, when you look at it like that.

Don't take it personally, most of us understand being new. But the money was easier to make then, and the competition wasn't so stiff. We're sympathetic with you, but we're also worried about our families. Ten years from now, when you're fighting to make what you make today, and utilities have tripled in that time, maybe you'll understand better. Good luck.

It's because so many newbies want to work M-F, at their own chosen hours and want to make $50K a year to begin with. They think because they took a course, they know everything and have nothing to learn. They resent established MTs who learned on the job.

I'm from the days when MTs were hired because of their good spelling and typing skills. They trained us on the job. We had very few resources, about 5 good reference books to use, but we were able to get feedback from the doctors, who actually respected us and what we did for them.

Now, too many newbies think that an online course or a couple semesters at the local community college put them on the same level as an MT with 10+ years of experience. Not true. There is no substitute for experience.

To the newbies who think they are too good to work holidays and weekends, I just say, why on earth did you take a job in healthcare, which is 24/7 365 days a year, if you want a 9-5, M-F job? Go to work for an insurance company or an accounting firm.

If you can't raise your family and hold down a job at the same time, then quit and let someone else have the opportunity.
There are so many newbies who cannot get a job and would
probably take that and not think twice.  Twenty years ago I was making 6  cpl/gross line.

I have been in this field for 17 years and on 'another board' I was ridiculed beyond reason for posting a problem I had with a vendor who advertised on that site. Little did I know I was a site where there were cliques present, you know like high school. HEY we were all new at one time or another and how do you lean if you don't ask questions? Compassion, patience and understanding goes a long way.

Sheesh people - it doesn't matter how many years we've been doing this - we're all in the same boat here. Just because some of us have more experience than others, that doesn't mean we're any better or that our opinions are more important.

I have to take back what I said earlier about having not seen any nastiness here because now I have - and it's right here in this thread.

Like you, I had a mentor in a former R.N. who started a small transcription company. I knew some medical terms but not much. I did have the advantage, however, of being a very fast typist at that point. But I had never worked with any type of dictation equipment. I started when I was 26 and more or less retired at the age of 67. To say that this profession is on life support is probably the most accurate and honest statement I've heard in a long time. I was able to work at home with young children and it was a God-send at that time. For years I worked full-time for a large group as a salaried employee plus worked several nights a week at a local hospital because they had new computerized equipment and I wanted to learn that. I still love the medical profession and all that it entails and am truly sorry that now all the bits and pieces stored in my brain won't be used any longer for transcription. I still try to read about medicine and get on this site frequently just to "keep up" but, again, the profession as we oldies knew it is dead in the water. My own family physician has already switched to EMR. In fact, he types his own notes as he sees the patient. He said the group could not afford to hire a transcriptionist. To put it mildly, transcription "ain't" what it used to be, that's for sure. So sad, really.

Hi! Where does a newbie get started? I am working at a large local hospital in the Transcription Dept. and have been here a year. I transcribe 2 days and I do tech work. I just finished my internship and I have my MT certificate. :) I do not know where to start to find MT work as a newbie. Anyone have any advice?  I am able to get 2 days transcribing at my current job but I want a second job transcribing. Any adivce is greatly appreciated! :) 
Yes, there are a lot of places worse off, but

there are a lot of places that are a lot better too. For the money and the resources that this country has, we do not nearly take care of business the way we should. Do you know that there are countries that do not have as much money as we do or resources, yet every citizen is entitled to healthcare by way of government paid insurance. Do you know how many people we have in the US that are uninsured? Do you know how many countries offer paid maternity leave for mothers? I could go on, but I won't. The US is a lot better than a lot of places, but we should be ashamed at how we handle things a lot of the times. America is full of a lot of greedy people, and we wonder why other countries hate us. Do you know that the cost of the president's inauguration party would have been way more than enough to armor every single vehicle that our military had? Do you know how many lives or injuries could have been saved if only the vehicles were armored better? Where are our priorities there?

While you may have had one person train you, depending on the work you do and number of QA staff that support that work, yes. QA is usually hired as supervisory staff, which means they do QA, train, feedback, report quality issues, nonworking issues, etc. as well as being a source for you to ask for help, report issues, conflicts, etc. Usually when QA is done, all QA staff are polled for each person for any quality issues, complaints from clients, etc. to get the whole picture. While you may not view the QA staff as "bosses" per se, their word carries weight...do not be too quick to burn bridges.

Well, things will be totally different with the new generation since it is an accepted standard that women just do everything a man does for the most part now. I unfortunately was on the cusp of this changeover and will be too old to benefit.

I don't think too many of today's kids think that "male body parts" qualify as superior in the workforce. And if you do, you need to look around, because today women even fly fighter jets.

Places to work...

I can certainly sympathize with your plight.  Am forced to leave MQ because of the pay and now because of the uncertainty of having a job in a few years has come into play.  I searched and found that no one really wants to pay more than 7-9 cpl anymore.  I did find one place that will pay more.  I think it is based on experience, multiple specialties and the account itself.  I start in a week and they are starting me out at 9.5 with a review in 90 days to possibly go to 10.  There may be even 11 in my future, if I do well with this company.  So far, everything seems to be working out with this company.  They have a very strict QA period to start, but I think it will be okay once I start actually typing.  It is also strictly typing, no editing.  So real money for real pay.  I know that I did not find anyplace that paid better on the internet.  This will bring me back to what I was making with MQ before the editing came around, which will be good for me.


 


So, it takes a lot of searching and a lot of hard work to find the right fit for you.  If you would like more info on the company I found, e-mail me and I will let you know.  I have a feeling they will be getting loaded with resumes in the coming months from people from MQ.  Glad, I started before all this started.

If Dell or places like that do not have it,
try a local computer store/repair service.
The same features are all there but in different places because
of the new ribbon. If you were productive in an older version, you would be just as productive in 2007 once you learn your way around the new layout. Almost all of my old keyboard shortcuts still work in 2007 so I don't fool with the ribbon all that much. I toggle it off most of the time because it's so huge and takes up too much room on my screen.

Are you sure your trial version isn't fully functional? Maybe your trial time has expired?

Most places can tell who has edited
a report, whether the MT, QA, or other personnel. I had a physician actually go in and change something on mine which was not correct. I saw that it had been changed and contacted my supervisor and she was able to tell the physician had changed it, not QA. So there are things in place most programs that can tell who made what changes.

Please go to www.careerbuilder.com.  On the left hand side, enter into 'keyword' box, 'transcription work from home'.  Do not enter a city or state or category.  Now click on 'search'.  There are several jobs her for transcriptionists with little experience.  Some of them require that you live in a certain area.  Many of them do not.  When you call to inquire about these positions, make sure that it's not some sort of school thing that requires you to pay a fee.  I hope this is helpful.
