Welcome!  You will definitely learn a lot here.  As far as I know, you will need a foot pedal no matter what.  There are people who transcribe using the shift key to rewind and fast forward.  But I would hate to have to add in another key to use when trying to type fast.  My school supplied the foot pedal I have.  I am not sure if most schools do this or not.  If you are an employee for a transcription company, they decide how much to pay you, just like any other job.  If you want to become an IC you decide that.  I keep a rough estimate of my line count using the word counter in Microsoft Word and dividing total by 65 (most MTs are paid based on a 65 character line).

I am still considered a newbie so I am sure people who have been doing this for years and years will be able to help you out more than I can.
