Several companies still train on site. In fact, we are piloting an on-site training sm
program, where everyone would come in to the Keystrokes office to train for 1 or 2 weeks. We have a large training room and feel that this may be a way to cover all aspects of an account, be right there to answer questions as they come up and have one-on-one contact.

It will be optional at this point and may not be more effective as remote training, but some people have expressed that they miss the training that you get when you start at a hospital.

We are trying to bridge that gap between working in-house somewhere and working at home.

It may seem out-dated in many ways, but sometimes going back to basics is a good step to take!
Were you on the west side of Richmond? In Aylett we were out only 2 days! - sm
We were very lucky....were blocked in though on our private road, 11 trees fell over the road. Took 2 hours of all the neighbors pulling together and going nuts with the chain saws to clear the road....fun!
Remote hospital transcriptionist
Hi, I work for a 270-bed hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO and have been with them for 14 years. 9 years ago we went to at-home typing and it's been great. We have health insurance (family plan is only 105.00 a month) and you get 50% employee discount for whatever insurance doesn't pay. We get 11 cpl on a 60 character line. We can work our own hours, just have to meet a 5000 line quota per two weeks to maintain health insurance. We go on-call for a week at a time where we are available that week to type stats should there be any during the night or weekend, but we receive on call pay (an additional 220.00 that week). By looking at what some others offer I feel very fortunate to work where I do. Right now they are not hiring as we don't have a turnover. One of our girls has been there for 25+ years. Hope you find what you are looking for. They are out there if you just keep looking. Take care.

I definitely will! Thanks!
We are going to Florida for 3 days minus kids..
this weekend to take a look around and see about relocating. I have been doing the same thing. It is doing nothing for my production!

Have a great trip and relaxing vacation :O)
Curious. What CPL is MQ hiring at these days sm
for acute care employee with 15+ years experience?  When I left them 3-years-ago I was making 10 CPL.  Those signon bonuses are enticing me.

Question re: hospital hiring practices

Recently I have found myself wanting to apply for a couple of in-house positions at two local hospitals in my area.  The main concerns I have that are preventing me from sprucing up my resume and just going to apply are:  First of all, I have not ever worked in a hospital before, and even the positions which seem to be low-level clerical positions want hospital experience.  I'm hoping that my medical transcription background coupled with my secretarial/office/customer service background would suffice for the 1-2 years of experience I see that is preferred for these types of positions.

Secondly, I am wondering about the background check process.  Unfortunately, I have a very distant past, about 20 years ago.  Our state has a First Offender Act, which I received, and this is supposed to provide, if all of the terms of the court are satisfied, no record/no conviction.  I have spent some time reading about this on-line, attempting to find answers about how far back hospitals go when checking, as I would prefer to not have to mention anything at all about this if possible.  I know that what one hospital does may be different from others, but was wondering if any of you have experience with the hiring process of hospitals and could offer information about what your experience suggests in regards to this.  I would really appreciate any information you could offer, as I have really been nervous and anxious lately, and I think that the 8 years I have spent working at home have taken somewhat of a toll on my social skills, so kind of feeling down in the dumps about whether I could successfully get through the interview and hiring process without the above problems, but hoping that some information from you all who have knowledge of this would ease my mind somewhat and enable me to get through this.

I really appreciate you all taking the time to read this and offer any advice you can.  TIA, and a very Merry Christmas to all of you!!!

West coast prices are usually higher (I work for a west coast company) sm

for one thing. I am in a rather economically depressed area and I START my price at .14 and drop a penny for each of several things - no tapes, sending electronically, etc.

This job of the OP may be a bugger-bear to transcribe. Even .14 may be too low.

I remember back in my hospital days...
when we had the more personal contact aspect with the docs. The ones who cared could/would actually walk back to where we were and you could ask them questions, have them correct something, etc., or the MR director could tell the heavy ESL docs to enunciate their English better, ha-ha, which sometimes actually worked. Our county coroner would tell us some interesting stories late in the evening. One lady plastic surgeon loved what she did so much, if you asked her a question, she would draw you pictures of what she did. I once handed an awful resident doc my earphones so he could hear what he was dictating; he was so embarrassed he slowed down from then on, so it made a huge difference. For a few years, to get the docs to get their charts done faster, the MR director held a contast; the winning doc would get a free trip somewhere. You would not believe how some of these guys would compete for this prize, cracked us up.
Yeah, those days are gone, but I hope to live to see the work goes back to the local hospital level. A hospital system the next town over to me did post 5 full-time Transcriptionist jobs last fall; I applied, just wanted an interview. I never heard back so I don't know how this panned out. I think I'd apply to return to in-house work if that ever happened. The job was definitely more interesting then.
I posted a couple days ago about my contract negotiations with a hospital. SM

Now, we have negotiated 12 cpl and that I only need to deliver work three times a week.  We've also decided that radiology will be a whole separate contract and that next week I will do a sample of dictation to see if the dictators are going to be difficult.  And then the negotiations start again.

How am I doing so far?

I worked on site for a hospital
that had voice recognition in their radiology department (PowerScribe). That was very easy and enjoyable, but I was paid hourly - no idea if it would have been profitable otherwise. They did cut half their staff when they made the switch, so that might give you an idea on pay. You can do about twice as much I guess? Hope it goes well!
Hey, my old cable remote had a remote! sm

Depends on what kind of hospital? Large urban hospital or small community hospital? SM

Also, is it a large teaching hospital? If so you have to consider there will be A LOT of different residents dictating, usually a lot of ESLs at teaching hospitals, and the residents rotate out and new ones rotate in every summer. So you can't expect to get the same dictators and build up your macros because the dictators change all the time.

I would say 9 cpl would be a pretty good offer for a small to medium community hospital where you will be doing the same dictators on a daily basis.  But for bigger, urban or teaching hospitals I would want at least 12 to 15 cpl.

I had said 8 PM EST, not west.

Remote Control
AND you can keep the remote control right next to your keyboard to mute it when necessary. I think it sounds great. I might try it!
Remote PC connection

One of my clients allows me to remotely access their computer to obtain patient lists and transfer files. I have high-speed cable, but there is some delay when I use Word on their computer. I imagine other programs would be a bit slower as well.

If you have Windows XP Professional, you can give this a try yourself by setting up a Remote Desktop Connection. A Google search for this will give you step-by-step instructions.

Go to mtjobs.com. There are plenty on there.
Probably best to do remote training overall. sm
I realize you probably needed several MTs right away, but most are going to agree to remote training faster than flying somewhere. I am looking for a new job right now but I'm also still working at my old one, and need to make a living in the meantime, so it's hard enough for me to find time to test online for other places. I make the time to do so, but it often means working longer hours. There's no way I could up and leave my family to train elsewhere since my DH travels a lot. Granted, I would not have agreed to that in the first place if I knew it was not feasible and definitely wouldn't have backed out without notice. That's just wrong on the part of the MTs involved. Yes, MTs complain about MTSOs a LOT, but many don't realize just how bad some of what the MTSOs put up with can be. I've often had to fill in for others who just flaked or went missing without advance notice. IC or not, that's just bad business. If these were in-house jobs, they'd be canned.

In my job search, I've noticed a whole lot of ads now want on-site MTs and specifically say not an at-home position, and I have to wonder if it's because they've been burned by the flakes. If that's the case, then it's hurting ALL of us who wish to do this from our home offices. Whether you are MT or MTSO, you have to remember the golden rule. If you use respect and act professional, more times than not, you will in turn be treated with respect and professionalism. There will always be bad apples, in any profession, so you have to take your lumps and just move on without becoming so jaded.
30 hours divided by four days equals seven-hour days. Most of us have to work pretty much every day

West Coast to Amherst
I am a little confused--areyou located on the West Coast and your account was transferred to Amherst, did your office close?? It seems that any account that Foxboro or Amherst gets, they just load up with as many MT's as they can, this could be from over hiring and it could from the lose of existing accounts, whatever, it does not make sense, you don't go around making thrats about hiring other people. Is upper management getting bonus's from this??

Yay for this board, I don't feel so remote
I admit I leave this page open all day (addicted) and refer back, just because knowing there are fellow MTs online makes me feel like I have coworkers again!  Sometimes I do get cabin fever with the only souls around me all day being my cat and dog.  Wondering how everyone copes with being remote and getting cabin fever once in awhile...has anyone gotten to the point where they were either too lazy/scared to leave their house??

Lanier Remote Station
Can anyone send me instructions on how to program an older Lanier remote transcription system? I think it is an LX-128? I just don't remember. I took my out of the closet to see if it works and have lost my instructions. Everything is all plugged in and works. HOwever, I get a double tone and not a dial tone. I remember having to program it but it has been sooooooo long ago. Any help would be appreciated.

Come on over to the west coast too where interracial marriage
It is very small minded to think that crossing races to marry is wrong.  Again, we are all people, no matter what color we are.  For example, I would rather my daughter marry a black man who treated her with respect, love, kindness, being an equal than married to a white man who treated her like trash.  Note that I said EXAMPLE, the race could vary of course.
west coast metropolitan area gets 14 cpl
yes, 14 cpl with pick up and delivery. Probably one of the highest in the nation. But, my friend who did local work for 20 years was just outsourced to India along with the other gals, the whole large clinic, so there goes THAT job !

BTW, do you already do local work? Do they supply the transcriber and set you up, or do you have to have that set up already and set THEM up? That has been a mystery to me as I have only worked online with nationals....how to get started with local work.. Maybe a counselor or something like that. My friend is no help as she started 20 years ago for the same company and does not know how things go nowdays.
im sure it will be... maybe moderater is on west coast time?

I live in remote area - no cable or DSL

and Clearwire is also not available.  I have the satellite service. It is expensive - you have to purchase the equipment and pay for the installation ($600 and up). The service is expensive too ($65).  The speed is not quite as fast as DSL, but I download and upload jobs with no problem.  Some MTSOs won't allow satellite service, citing security issues, which is dumb.  It's like any other wireless service - you have to make sure your signal is secure, which you do through your computer (not the service itself).  Even this is ridiculous in remote areas for 2 reasons: 1) I really don't think anyone is going to bother camping out on my land or drive down my mile-long driveway with their laptop just to see if they can pick up a signal and 2) even if they did, they can only gain access to the internet itself - they can't see what you are doing online.  So this security issue thing is baloney!  Also, in 2004 when we were hit by Hurricanes Charlie, Frances and Jeanne, there was no phone or cable service for nearly a month, but I was still able to work by just using our generator for my computer until the electric came back on - those that had dialup, DSL or cable were outta luck.

Hospitals that require remote transcriptionists

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to find hospitals that hire remote transcriptionists. I've been googling all morning, and I'm not having any luck. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it!

Have a remote garage door opener?
Could have scared the bajeebies out him by shutting it while he was in your garage. Only thing is, you'd be cleaning up bajeebies off your garage floor.

I have a dog that does a very good Tasmanian devil impression, spitting included, when people knock. The people can see her through the door and they usually leave a card or whatever they have and move out pretty quickly.
Meditech remote workstation 3? Shorthands?
The company I work for will only pay hourly for Meditech remote workstation 3 transcription becuase you can't use any shorthands in it. Is this true? It seems like an awful program that works like an old DOS-type program. I've seen other posts about Meditech and ShortHand but I'm not sure if we are just using a terribly old version or what the deal is. Can you offer any help? Thanks!

Great West covers Botox for headaches.
Otherwise, go to a neurologist. It only costs $425 and worth every penny.

It sometimes is really hard to transcribe patients complaining about their headaches when your own head is about to explode. I did learn how to take charge of my own care, which happened to be extremely useful because the pain management physician I was assigned to ended up being the biggest idiot on earth. I was finally able to change doctors.
Remote 008Keylogger found constantly on my spyware.
Everytime I log onto the server for the company I work for I run my spyware.  Everytime  I open a job lately I have re-run my spyware and it seems to me that "008remote keylogger" is constantly on my PC.  This spyware enables the "server" to see everything I type, every email, and where I go on my internet.  Would anyone else be concerned?
