instead of telling them the times you WON'T be able to work, try telling them when you WILL be available.  For instance, if you normally start working at 9 am but can't that day, email that you will be available on such-and-such a day but not until after 3 pm (or whatever time you can fit in).  If you take off an entire day, mention that you will try to make up hours at a time when they may need extra help.
I just recently made the same type of move (though 600 miles away not 100), with husband going to new job first, me packing, selling the house, and working 1-1/2 jobs.  It is hectic and stressful.  I can certainly understand what you are going through.  My "employers" ( I am an IC) were very understanding but I still had to realize that they have a business to run and that they were counting on me.  And, of course, I was counting on the income they provided.  But, being an IC, that gave me a little more leeway.
Good luck to you.  And know that in a few weeks or so you will be back into a set schedule!
