What I had to do....

I don't live an apartment, but do have lots of people with kids nearby who like to stop by and visit the animals.  I finally had to put a sign on my front door asking people not to knock or ring bell because I was sleeping (when I was workin' third shift) and it really worked!  Even UPS didn't pester me!  You could certainly slap a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your door when you are working.  I just turned my phone off during the day and let the machine take messages.

As far as the phone, that's a tough one because that's your job...not like you can turn it off.  Can you get another line strictly for work?  That way you can keep that line free and friends/family/whoever can call your home line and either get you, or an answering device of some sort.
