What a harsh thing to say.....it is sad for any mother to lose a child

I can relate. My mother used to do the same thing to me when I first started doing this -sm

she would say I am going to let you go so you can get back to work and then go off on some other topic and several minutes later I am still on the phone.  I finally would start typing so she could hear my fingers on the keyboard so she would finally let me go.  She would also call right before I had to pick up my girls from school and then get huffy when I had to tell her I had to go because they were waiting for me (tell me that I should make them ride the bus so I could stay home and get my work done - this after keeping me on the phone for over 20 minutes or more so she was the reason I wasn't getting my typing done).  I also had to do what you are doing and let the machine pick up (the only reason I answered the phone was just in case it was the school calling about my kids). 


She also told me once that I shoud go camping for the week with them (my husband could take us one weekend and come home and work the week and come back the next weekend).  This after explaining to her many many times that I only get paid when I type and if I take a vacation I not only lose the $$ I would have made that week but end up spending that and then some during the vacation.  Several years later my brother lost his job and worked sales for another company and only got paid a small salary and comission and when they only camped close enough to home so that my brother could still work she acted like that was no big deal (hello, same thing I had been trying to get through her head for several years before that).  Some people just don't get it that we are actually working and that we only get paid by production so with any interruptions we lose $$.  Good luck to you.  I certainly understand where you are coming from.  Not sure there is anything you can do or say to make him understand though.

I wish I could. That is why this business is as bad as it is. We can't afford to not work, so we settle for whatever gets thrown at us.
Go to NBC10.com - Our local news has "Wednesday's Child" which is a child for adoption.
Every Wednesday they introduce a child who needs a home and a family. There should be some information there as these kids are up for adoption.

WRONG! A child that has a fear of discipline = a well behaved child.
I have a beautiful, intelligent 11 year old daughter that hasn't had a spanking in 6 or 7 years and probably only 3 her entire life. She is very well behaved and I get compliments on her behavior constantly. When she does get out of line all I have to say is, "Shall I call your father?" Call it what you want, it works. She respects and obeys me and her father. Why??? For fear of the facing the consequences of misbehaving. Having a total lack of fear or respect for authority is exactly what's wrong with Generation X/kids today. I turned out just fine as did my siblings. Why?? Because my parents took "time out" to bust our a$$es whenever we got out of line.

Is that clear enough for you???

concerned, why don't you work for MT company that provides health insurance? I realize that all health insurance options are not affordable, but you can try. Anything would be better than going without, espcially if you are older.

How is this stupid?

It would be way cheaper to hire 2 (even 3) part-time transcriptionists to do the work that I do because they wouldn't have to pay for benefits, wouldn't have to pay the bonus (most likely the part-timers could not meet the bonus criteria), probably wouldn't even pay them as much for a base line rate, and they wouldn't have to pay OT. How is that not a valid question?

I'm a legit CMT and I really cannot stand when people call themselves certified when they are not.  I would think if someone had been in school they would know the AHDI by now and have done some research on that organization and certification.  Not knowing is no excuse.  If she says she is certified on a resume and someone checks (very easy), she will be looked at as a scammer.

to this, but I personally love my job with MW. Yes, sometimes there are problems but that is true everywhere. I have a very supportive team leader and enjoy sitting down to work every day, and make a very good living doing it.

Study time can be a wonderful bonding time.  If you take the time to sit down with a child/teen, it shows you are interested in their progress and you may give them study ideas they didn't think of.  To just tell them to do it on their own I think is rather harsh and gives the impression that you aren't interested.  When mine ask me questions, even if it's something I don't know anything about, like calculus, I'll tell them to pull up a chair and then research it and do my best to come up with an answer.  It's just invaluable time you can spend with a child.  Mine always had chores from the time they could walk, like putting up their clothes, and all 4 know how to cook, clean, do laundry, and each gets a specific job each day.  Education has always been #1 - studying and learning before anything else but not made to be like a punishment.


My third son, a senior now, had an assignment in physics.  I rented physics videos from netflix and we watched those and discussed them and looked up stuff on the net and most importantly, we talked the whole time.  They constantly come in to where I work and talk to me, about anything and everything, to share something they learned at school, something they found out on wikipedia, etc.  If they come to you for help, take the time to give it, it's not just helping with homework, it's giving them a feeling that what they do matters.

That's a little bit of a harsh assessment, IMO.
I'm no prima donna, either, but I think anybody with a clerical background would be surprised to get an offer for dishwashing, to say the least. I would have been shocked. Not insulted, just extremely surprised to be offered such a different position than the one I was qualified for.

When I entered the workforce 20 years ago, I actually tried for a job like that and didn't get it; they said with what college I had, I was overqualified! I didn't care, I just wanted to work; but they wouldn't talk to me. The scenario the OP describes is so different from my experiences that I too would be shocked if it happened to me.

Frankly, I was interested and have the requisite experience (currently doing the work for a pediatric teaching hospital). But then I hit the part about once monthly pay and waiting 2 months for that first check. While there may be someone on here who has enough free time to work 2 months without seeing any benefit and is only taking the job to get that Coach bag they've had their eye on, most of us who would consider taking a part-time job aren't taking it to fill our down time; we're taking it to put food on the table.

I accept them as one of God's precious creations, born with a sin nature, just like me. I never know when someone who rebukes me for gentle sharing of what Jesus has done for me may actually be saying that they wish somebody would take the time and interest in them to explain what they do not understand. For example, a person who has only seemed offended previously may one day turn to me and ask me if they have sinned too much for God to forgive them. And I can tell them how Jesus can save them. Sometimes it happens and then we rejoice.

I agree with you to an extent about threatening with that, and I have informed family members that could be done if he does not get help and endangers them in some way. They of course say they know, I think they are trying to handle it without hurting the kids any further. He has not physically hurt them just scared them which is bad enough! Thanks
Wow that's kinda harsh- it seems to me its the opposite
from what I have seen it seems like the seasoned MTs resent the Newbies- I have seen no sign of it being the other way around, which I would actually even understand considering the nastiness they run into on this board.

I don't think anyone thinks their having completed an MT course puts them on a par with someone who has been doing it for years- they simply want to be given a chance. So you were trained on the job- good for you. But thank God there are training courses out there now so that people come in with at least some knowledge.

And there is nothing wrong with not wanting to work every single weekend and every single holiday. Where I work everyone has to work at least one weekend day, newbies and seasoned alike. There are only a couple who have been here so long that they have monday-friday days due to seniority. Everyone here has to work at least 12 hours of holidays a year,no matter who you are or how long you have worked here. I don't mind working holidays so that people with families can have them off. I don't see why someone should get stuck with all the scut work just because they are new.

It's all production pay. It's not theft to get your line quota in and knock off for the day. Why should the fast ones be penalized for being good? Why should they have to do more work than the others? You can't fire somebody for meeting their contracted production in a timely manner.
Atkins was too harsh for me, but SouthBeach was really good.

if you are one who has problems tolerating Atkins.  I got severe migraines and had to quite for a while, but then I started SouthBeach and did much better on it.

I know this sounds harsh and probably will get slammed by this board, but I would tell him that if
he does not check into a formal rehab program that you are going to call Social Services and have them check about having his children removed.  These kids are too young to be in the situation of "taking care of daddy," and there could potentially be serious consequences.  There could also be more serious complications with his head injury that may be surfacing along with his drinking.

in widget factories don't have real jobs, either.

I'm positive your QA people don't have any beef with you whatsoever as long as you are creating something real QUALITY.

QA people are under just as much stress as the rest of the MT world.

I'm sorry for your loss. My own old girl Tildy died on April 21 and I miss her so much. Last week, I finally adopted another dog, and we are going to be great friends I know, but I still miss Tildy. I probably would have put off adopting a new dog longer, but a friend of mine sent me a *comic strip* called "Shelter Stories" - it shows this dog lying there with his eyes closed thinking "I'm afraid to open my eyes. I'm afraid yesterday was ALL a dream and I'll wake up and still be in the shelter. "Sigh, okay, I've got to open them. Here goes...one, two, three! it's a picture of this dog lying there on a nice soft bed and when he opens his eyes, there's a person there too, just smiling at him.

Sometimes we're all each other has. I hope your heart feels better soon.

You won't necessarily lose your job,
but you will get the absolute worst dictators and dictation possible. All the good stuff goes offshore and we get what's left. And make sure the account you're offered pays for headers and footers to make up for them not paying for spaces. No all accounts pay for headers and footers, and that really makes a difference.
Lose 5 lbs. I saw the doc last week and
gained 10 this year and was already overweight, so I'll start this week by losing at least 5 lbs.
But don't you also lose money when...
you are paid by the line, and you are sitting there waiting for Mr. hem & haw to start talking again? When you are paid by the dictation minute, you are paid for the length of the sound file, whether the ditator is talking or turning pages or hemming & hawing. I had a few times when I had a 20-minute sound file, which I was paid for, even though there was only 5 minutes of dictation on it!

Also, you know EXACTLY how much money you will make on the report before you even start typing it, regardless of what type of dictator it is.
How to lose an MTSO

Just curious here . . . how to you deal with a MTSO who, for all accounts, seems like they are stalking you for hire.  I checked out the company, realized I was lied to about a number of issues I specifically asked about up front and disliked the platform tremendously.  I gave it a few days – determined it was not for me because I could not be productive and I informed the recruiter that I was no longer interested in working for the company.  Since that time, I have been contacted no less than 3 times.  I cessated my contact after the verbal communication only to be hounded with E-mails and packages via snail mail.  The owner of this company is really starting to scare me.  Personally, instead of running a business, in my opinion, should be running to the psych ward – and quickly I might add.  I have not communicated since I made my final decision – I’m almost afraid to.  What would you all suggest?  I really just want this person to leave me alone.  This particular MTSO is one that seems like the “no” answer is just not even an option.  I have no interest in working for someone with this type of personality and I have no interest in running my business in the red because of a poor platform.  Help please.  Can you report someone for stalking if they are in a different state?  I cannot change my E-mail address as I do have my own business contacts to think of. 


So in other words, pay will be cut, and WE lose. - sm
If the MTSO is bringing in more lines per hour with this system, (and you just KNOW they aren't going to slash their prices to the hospitals!), why cut the MTs pay per line? The MT (who actually PRODUCES the work, after all) should be sharing in some of the rewards of increased productivity, rather than being SHAFTED.

I applied to a company I really wanted to work for, waited a week, sent an email, waited a day, called, and was called back an hour later and hired.  The squeaky wheel etc etc.  Good luck to you!!
firm 15 cpl --you will lose it
Sorry but at 15 you will lose it.  Once you get used to the dictators you will easily make $35 to $45 per hour even counting in the delivery time.  Define your line as gross lines with 1" margins and if they want smaller ones, then you revert back and do your line count that way.  If you want to cover yourself, tell them that at 12 cpl you want it written up in the contract that should they cancel at anytime  -- unless it is due to gross errors, incorrect billing (cheating them), not keeping TAT, etc. that they  will pay your average paycheck for the term of the contract. Again look at what you can make per hour not what the cpl is.  If you come across too high, they will advertise and get someone for the 12 easily.   Good luck.   Get it all spelled out ini black and white.  Also go back at 12.5 -- again good luck

I work for 2 companies and cherrypicking is the quickest way to get taken off the accounts. It is absolutely not tolerated at either place. I would not ever work for a company that allowed cherrypicking.

Monday - I will lose an account

I just did the stupidest thing.  I could cry but it would not help.  I will lose this account due to my carelesness and not thinking.  I accidentally just erased two "undone" tapes and kept two "finished" tapes.   So on Monday I have to tell the doctor and if I were them I would fire me.   They have been my account for 4 years but have been patient with me at times through some personal problems -- yucky divorce -- and I do a good job at a very reasonable rate but I would not blame them if they fired me.  I just want to take myself out and beat myself silly.  But there is nothing I can do right now and so oneward and upward -- I guess.  But this will hurt as it is my largest account and I am a small MTSO so I will be out pounding the pavement for something.

Did you lose the weight after coming off?

I'm gonna check into the things you mentioned and go by my local health food store. Before I went on the HRT, I did try the OTC stuff which seemed to work for a little while, but after a few months started having the hot flashes again. I did purchase some progesterone cream a few years ago while I was still having periods (after watching a segment of Oprah), but never used it right, then went on the HRT. I really do want to get off of it and get my weight down. Did you have trouble getting weight back down after coming off?

Why do you want American MTs to lose their jobs?
That's what will happen if we get a "union" and try to convince employers that they have to conform to "union rules" and "union wages". They'll just find even more people overseas who are happy to work for peanuts. Unionization will not benefit the American MT at all. The same with licensure. Some people just work for small clinics doing one type of work. If everyone has to pass the AAMT CMT test (which is what AAMT means by "licensure"), people who only know one type of work won't be able to pass. If you have to have the license to work, they will lose their jobs. What good would that do anybody except AAMT, which would get all those exorbitant fees for taking the CMT exam? None of these ideas will benefit American MTs. They're all obviously part of AAMT's campaign to outsource all MT work in this country. AAMT does not work for us; they work for the MTSOs who are making big bucks by outsourcing our jobs overseas.
Dont Lose Hope!
We need to curb the outsourcing of this industry. The big boys already have the voice recognition systems but will still need MTs and the other countries have armies of MTs and still training more. Wait, im the one losing hope. HELP
