I need suggestions of something I can give my husband....sm
as a wedding gift on our wedding night.  I've already bought him a very nice watch, necklace and bracelet over the time we've been dating/engaged and am having a hard time  coming up with a great special gift for him.   He's not into sports and we already have theatre tickets to see the musical Chicago a week after our wedding.  I want to give him something that he can keep forever.  Do any of you have any ideas?
Starting oncology account, please give suggestions/tips.

Then they need to go about it the correct and LEGAL way. I pay taxes to give them free sm
benefits when they are illegal and don't even pay taxes, but yet I am told I will have no social security even though I have paid it in for over 20 years. They want to come over here to live, they should start by learning our language and then getting themselves LEGAL and paying taxes like all of the LEGAL people here do. I am struggling and I can get no benefits, but they don't even have to be legal to get them. Big sign at the DHS office that says, we can help you even if you are not legal.
Been there. A few good suggestions. It works.

My poor daughter has been blessed with very curly, unruly, bushy hair.  She is a target for head lice and used to get them at least 2 or three times every year. We tried cutting her hair off, but it made it worse, because it grows outwards like a big bush.

I have read up on this subject in detail and have found many things that work, or at least help, as the new generation of head lice seem to be impervious to most treatments.

TREATMENT:

No matter which treatment you do use, wash your child's hair and wrap it in a towel and LEAVE IT WET FOR A FULL 15 MINUTES.  The lice can shut of their breathing for only 15 minutes and then they have to breath again.  After the 15 minutes (set the timer), do the treatment. That way they can no longer breathe without sucking in the treatment.

For younger children either soak the hair in mayonnaise or vegetable oil and put  a rubber bathing cap or plastic grocery bag, tied snugly, on their head and have them leave it on overnight. This suffocates the nasty little bugs.  Wrap the cap or bag with a towel and clip it to avoid leakage of the oil and slippage of the cap or bag..  It's gross, but it works.  My daughter still won't eat mayo. :)

For older children, NIX and ONLY NIX.  No substitutes.  They do not work.  Believe me, I've tried to get out of it cheaper. It's expensive, but it works.  Buy the box with 2 bottles, because you MUST do it again a week later. Nix treatment must be repeated in 7 days after the first treatment.  I always do it in another 7 days afterwards, just to be safe.

Lice comb must be METAL.  Plastic does not do the job.

MOST IMPORTANT:  Remove all nits from the hair.  The stinky buggers have been reported to live even after 2 treatments. Recheck for nits every single day.  With my daughter's hair, at shoulder length and bushy, it was at least six hours the first time and I picked the nits off daily for weeks. You can also cut off the hair strands to make it quicker. Sunlight works best to see them in, but a good mag lite that you can wear on your head to keep your hands free works just as well after dark. Buy a pair of strong reading glasses at the dollar store for a buck.  That will given you magnification enough to see the nits, as they are hard to see.

HOUSE CLEANING:   Don't just spray, bag everything they have in their room that is cloth. PUT ALL stuffed animals, bedding, pillows, etc. in a trash bag.  Tie it up tight and don't open it for 2 weeks. A favorite blanket or stuffed animal can spend a full hour in the dryer on high if need be.  Vaccum, but if you use vacuum bags, remove the bag EVERY time you vacuum (include the cloth furniture) and tie the vacuum bag up tightly in a trash bag or plastic grocery bag and throw it out of your house.

PREVENTION:  Buy shampoo that smells like coconuts.  Apparently the buggers don't like the smell. Suave sells one called "Tropical Coconut" for under $2.00.  Hair gel, hair spray and anything else with a strong smell will deter them as well. They don't like sweet smelling sticky hair AND they don't like dirty, greasy hair either.  They like the really clean fluffy stuff.

CHECK, CHECK, CHECK every week through the school year, and don't wait until your child is scratching their head.  If your child's hair is long enough, insist on a tight ponytail during school, preferably sprayed with a good amount of hair spray.

Most important, if your child comes home with lice, REPORT it to the school, daycare, church, camp or wherever.  It isn't your child that is giving other kids lice, it's the other kids that are giving lice to your child and either their parents are too ignorant or embarrassed to report it.

I reported my daughter's first incident, which was very mild, when she was in kindergarten the minute I noticed it. The school did a head check and hundreds of kids were just infested, but nobody had reported it.

Good luck.

Any suggestions for a GOOD company?

I have 15 years experience.  Looking for a company that is very flexible on scheduling (full time student also) and treats employee like a human.

Need good reference/webiste suggestions

I am brand new to this speciality and I am actually really liking it... but I am having trouble finding certain equipment... I was wondering if any of you have any favorite books or websites that have hard to find surgical tools/equipment?

I saw that Stedman's has one out--is that any good?

Thanks for any info!!

Looking for a good word expander to go along with MSWord. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Hi all!!!  I am currently using MSWord and would like to purchase a word expander.  I have done some research, but am still not certain which one to buy.  I wish not purchase one that will drain my bank account, but do want one with the capability to have the ability to add an indefinite amount of shortcuts, etc.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!!

Any suggestions on a good Vacuum at a reasonable price?
I would love to have a Dyson but they are a little over my budget.  Thanks!
Any suggestions for a good MT for part time other than MQ as far as a nice company to work for. I
think it is time for a change about now.

the quality and production will improve, & turnover will go down. Doctors keep raising prices to US, so why are we so squeamish about raising our prices to THEM?

Raise MTs pay & benefits. Sometimes you have to SPEND money to MAKE money.
I consider myself a good MT, can I give you my side?
I have 15 years experience and a pretty impressive resume.  I was called and sent a test file of 30 minutes - told to pick 2-3 files to test.  The sound quality was great, the dictator was a dream.  I was told I would be needed full-time, absolutely no part-time permitted, I would have the same dictator if at all possible, would get work late evening/early morning and was due back the next afternoon, was given a low but decent line rate, was expected to do a lot of work and give 5 days notice if I needed time off and work to start w/i several days.  Well, the work did not start for 2 weeks (new clinic getting up and running), the dictators were unorganized, the template was horrible - a nightmare for a typist/awkward to say the least, the line count was w/o spaces, the sound quality was poor, the work came late morning or afternoon and due that night, rarely got the same dictator, template and headers/footers changed several times, patient list, if provided, was in difficult format, work emailed and sometimes only half received, voice files were distorted, AND if I got work - only got 45 minutes to 60 minutes daily maybe 3 days a week and then a ton on Friday afternoon due early Monday morning..... This is not the job I applied for!!!  Thankfully I did not give notice at my other company and have had a back-up job all along - the new company is very nice but just not cutting it in my book - it was all about what they wanted/needed and to heck with what they said was going to happen - reality was quite different and quite disappointing. I do not consider 60 minutes full-time and I work mornings best - not a swing-shift.   I'm not hungry enough to jump through more hoops for them at this point.
good for a while, until your wrists give out.

How long do you give a new job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? sm
(Also posted on Company Board)

My saga follows. Please go to the bottom of post for my question :)

I've been with my current company as a PT emp. for 2 1/2 months. Everything about them seems to be quite fair, not great, but very fair. I'm still on hourly pay of a whopping $8.50 till I get my production up. Therein lies the problem, I cannot EVER see getting my line count up with the inordinately excessive number of ESLs on my acct. It's just ridiculous. All I'm asking is to actually TRANSCRIBE for a living, instead of rewinding and relistening 1000 freakin' times a day.

I've never gotten the feeling that I'm being taken advantage of or given the crap work, I just believe I'm on a very high percentage ESL account. I don't mind doing ESLs, I really don't. I just want more understandable drs thrown into the mix.

This is my first job after graduating and I was lucky enough to be hired for acute care. I'd like to continue in acute care. I just want to be able to PRODUCE, improve and ENJOY my job. I want to be doing MT work for many years to come.

I'd just like some opinions from those of you with more experience about what you might do in my situation.

Also, how long do you give a job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? Am I giving up too quickly?

That's good to hear. Maybe I should give it a chance and see if I like it.

I wanted to thank all those who give me good advice last week. SM

And for listening to me boo hoo about being laid off or dissolved as the suits at the hospital like to call it.  Anyway, I have officially accepted a QA Editor position with a service and I'm actually in a more positive frame of mind than I was last week.

I got my laptop all set up and ready to go with a laptop stand for plenty of ventilation, I put off buying any kind of wav player and just downloaded ExpressScribe for the time being, and I didn't saturate the market with my resume, but picked only a few places to apply based on suggestions and information you all gave me here.  And I did all of this because you ladies gave me such good advice.

I just wanted to say what a great place this is and it is very, VERY wonderful to have a place to network, socialize, fellowship, or just plain gab with colleagues and friends.

Give your keyboard a good upside down shake

Seriously...mine gets filled with all sorts of unspeakable oogies like cat hair, crumbs, and lord knows what else (thankfully I haven't spied anything that moves--yet!) and sometimes the keys (namely the shift/control/alt keys) stick.  These are the ones that will mess up control+function capabilities.  If that doesn't work, reboot.  If that doesn't work, call tech support just in case someone fiddled with preferences or something like that.

Another handy thing to have is one of those "cans of air" that you can blow out your keyboard with on occasion.

Good luck!

What I think is so sad is that people may give up good jobs to go there to find out these things all
to late. The newbies can learn and use MQ and move on which they do but of course the clients suffer then with all the people learning on them but this is what MQ causes and when they lose clients with poor quality or people that just throw out work then they caused their own problems. You cant keep good MTs with no work I dont care what incentives you offer because they mean nothing with no work ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I wish people would understand that when MQ hires them.
You have your W2 showing very clearly those taxes were paid. MQ is responsible for those taxes
because you were a statutory employee. That is the responsibility of the employer to pay those just as though you were an employee.
I spend a good deal of time tweaking the ones in there so ummm, may give it a shot lol

i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.

there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.
As an IC when paying taxes, are SS and fed taxes sent SM

Aw come one give her a break. She said she was sorry and is willing to refund. Give her a chance to

do what is right.  If she fails to do what is right, then go about this in an adult way and not act like such a child.  "you suck"  That is so immature.

She is responding to you and you are eating her alive.  Why would she put herself out there to be treated like this if she didnt mean it.

I am really astonished at how people can act on here.  Would you treat people like this in person?  If you do, I cant imagine you having very many friends.

Remember we are all "HUMAN."

THANK YOU! That is my point. She still pays taxes, her DH still pays taxes...

so who exactly is getting cheated?  And just who are you talking about when you talk about whether it is "fair" or not.  I don't give a crap how much taxes my neighbor pays.  It's none of my business.  And if I found out they were paying less in taxes than me, I would ask them how they heck are they doing it so I can do it too!

I just want ask, is it necessary to get personal and insult?  You disagree with me, fine.  But I've been called a liar, a cheat, a no-ingetrity thief, my intelligence has been insulted, and I have had my parenting skills questioned.  That is a little over the top.  If you cannot debate an issue without resulting to personal attacks, then YOU are the stunted one!

It is a very good thing that some of you work at home, ALONE!  You are sorely lacking in people skills and diplomacy.  Let me guess, when you worked in the office you were one of those girls who didn't like to share her desk, griped if someone dropped a crumb on your desk, and kept track of everyone's breaks, lunches, and line counts just so you could tattle to the supervisor!  I've worked women like you, it was like working with kindergarteners.  That's why I came home to work.  Do us all a favor, looking in the mirror, count your wrinkles, and realize that this isn't high school anymore!

A simple google search will give you your answer...I'd give you the answer,
but how would that help you learn to research on your own...and I'm in a rush to get to the next post.
Tell him you'll give him your macros if he'll give you his Lexus, his ski cabin, and (nm)

thanks to both for suggestions
don't know why i didn't think of this one...it just might work.
Thanks for all the suggestions. sm

I'm not very adventurous so I don't know how I'd like stripes or room themes, but I'm looking for a splash of color here and there.  I did like the idea of the pale blue sponge roller over white walls for the living room and a tan color for the dining room to make it a little more formal.  I think we're going to give that a try.  The sponge roller will give a little hint of color without making me feel anxious with the too busy or loud.

Thanks again, all

Thanks for your suggestions
I appreciate your suggestions. I have no typos in my resume or cover letter, I have contacted the phone company and let them know that I need DSL for a job, and I have received feedback from my online tests. I did have a position offered to me recently but I didn't have DSL and had to turn it down. I'm sure something will come along eventually. It is just discouraging to be so excited about entering a new career only to find so many hurdles. I guess it will only make me stronger. Your encouragement helps.
suggestions, please!

I need to order a .wav pedal, player and a word expander.  Anyone with info on a good pedal/player reasonably priced? Files will be sent to me as dss files.  Is there a good web site for new/preowned MT software?

TIA,

sunnyMT

Thanks for all the suggestions.
The IRS check came through in the mail today, so my backside got saved big time.  I also got a second job offer today, so I'm going to work two jobs for a while.  At least until Christmas.  Then I'll decide which job is better or if I can handle both on a permanent basis.  I do have some stuff to sell on ebay, so that'll be some quick cash.
Suggestions

Here's my 2 cents for whatever it is or isn't worth.  Bear in mind that I'm my own worst critic.  The hours worked and dependability aside, the first thing I would do is honestly evaluate my own work.  In other words, what criteria did I use to determine that all the work, or at least that not QA'd by myself, was crappy work?  Was the work really crappy or am I a "comma freak" or did I send QA feedback in a constructive rather than a critical way.?  Sh*t runs both way, QA people can kill even a good MT; MTs can also kill a good QA person.

As for the other QA person,  I personally wouldn't give jealousy the time of day unless that QA person was in a position to QA my QA, in which case; yes, she could give you serious problems since many company's management do not have a clue about the work an MT does and wouldn't know quality from crap.  Thus, they listen to the employees they trust and jealousy just doesn't factor in.  The only thing one can do about that is hope they don't get cross-ways of a jealous type person.

After evaluating myself and finding I had done my best and that every aspect of my job had been above reproach; then I would tell this company to take their job and stick it where the sun doesn't shine and I'd move on down the road until I found a company that would appreciate my dedication and hard work.

Good luck to you and don't let this get you down.  While they're hard to find, there are still companies out there who appreciate hard work and dedication and whose management understands MTs because they have been there, done that themselves.

suggestions...

I don't know what Harry & David is, but.. over the years I have given/received flavored coffee, Godiva chocolate, gift cert for lunch at local restaurant, book of car washes,  package of CDs, certificate for massage at local health club (my favorite!), manicure certificates.

Wow! THanks for these suggestions!

I am going to try the "propping" of the keyboard and see if that helps.  I think I will also order the Smartgloves and Handeze and give them a try.  I used to take glucosamine and chondroitin and I seemed to develop hip pain when I did.  When I stopped it, the pain went away.  Tried it again, the pain returned.  I can't imagine why that would happen.  Maybe I should give that another shot just in case!

I have been tested for thyroid in the last year, and many years before that, and it is always negative.  I have so many of the low thyroid symptoms.  Oh well...

Thanks everyone so much!

Here's some suggestions for you...

First off go to the local library and look at the April 2005 issue of Consumer Reports.  Each year they rate new/used cars for reliability and it's a great way to see what vehicles have shown to be reliable in your price range and which ones you should run from.

Once you've narrowed down a car regardless of where it comes from you should pay to have a CarFax report run. This report will tell you if the car has been in any accidents.

After CarFax clears the vehicle then you'll want to hire an independent mechanic to check out the vehicle.  While this will cost you around $100-150 it would be well worth it as they'll tell you if the vehicle is truly in the state the owner says.   Even if you get a car from a dealership with a supposed warranty always pay someone else to review the vehicle because you don't know for sure that the dealer's "checking people" will be honest in their claims on the quality of the vehicle.

Good luck on the search and let us know what you end up with!

If you're into sports how about giving yourself a Christmas present of some golf lessons?  That's one sport you can actually play alone or just go to the driving range...subtle advertising of your availability.

Loew's and Home Depot sound good in theory but I wouldn't recommend it, more likely to meet someone else's honey-doer.  If you're interested in handy men, maybe volunteer with Habitat for Humanity?

If you are at or near senior status, either join or volunteer at, or join, your local Senior Center.  Lots of single, lonely old geezers there.  Membership starts at age 50 I believe, volunteering at any age.

If you like bingo, try your local American Legion, many of them around the country have weekly bingo games.  Lots of middle age singles go there.

Get active in joining and/or volunteering.  You need to be around people.

My Christmas wish for you is that Santa will bring you your soul mate.

With accommodations for an extra dog being an issue for you, and since you have done everything within reason to try to locate the owner, I would say a week would be long enough.  You said yourself you have all fallen in love, and the longer you wait the harder it will be on her as well because she will start to think of you as her family.  I know most of us can’t help but have fears about taking a dog to the pound, but most of them really do excellent work in placing as many animals as possible, and making sure they are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots.  If you have to take her there, you many want to consider a donation towards her adoption fee, as having part of the fee prepaid will go a long way in helping someone choose to adopt her.  Another option you may consider is contacting a lab rescue group, they will place them in foster homes and thoroughly screen potential new owners to try to find the best home possible.  You may want to visit someplace like petfinder.com to find a rescue group near you.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! :) NM

Thanks for all the suggestions.

My suggestions
The poster above is right on it, for one. Slowly start adjusting the speed of your dictation and push yourself a bit, just so you have to work a little harder to keep up.

Learn as many keystroke combinations/shortcuts as possible -- avoid the mouse as much as possible.

Use your word expander: Put words, phrases, chunks of text in it. You should just be gliding along, rarely typing an entire word.

Don't eat/drink/smoke while you are typing - it takes your hands off the keyboard. Only do that during a break.

Most importantly for me is to set a specific goal for that 1 or 2-hour block and concentrate VERY hard on getting it. Push. Reward yourself with a short break when you're done. Then start again. Don't view your day as "8 hours" or "10 hours" ... look at it in 2-hour chunks of time.

Be well rested and eat lightly before you start typing.

Make sure you are comfortable and well supported in your desk and chair situation, lighting, even perhaps a little light music in the background.

Believe that you can do it. YOU CAN!!!

ham, potato salad - used to always go with a hot dinner, but a few years ago started making potato salad instead and like this idea better  - BUT - can't think of a vegetable.  Okay to have a hot vegetable with potato salad??  If so, what?  Green beans seem like Christmas, corn, no.  Can't decide.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  thanks

Any suggestions . . .
for reasonably priced DSL?  Suggestions would be appreciated.  Verizon charged me 62.17 this month as my introductory offer is over.  Does this sound like too much?   With the price of gas I need to cut corners somewhere.  Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your suggestions . . .
I am going to call them. I thought my introductory offer ended the first 3 months. Now I reached the 6 month mark and it went up again. I think my bill should be the same every month by now.
Can anyone help with suggestions? sm

Hi!  I just began working for an online company this week full-time, which I *LOVE*, especially after coming from a prior management position that was very stressful.  My main problem, though, is with productivity.  I used to type 120 wpm and could roll through 1200 lines a day with no problem whatsoever, and now I'm really struggling to get this minimum line count in.  This company has a tremendous platform, lots of training help, etc., and it's not that - I think it's primarily due to my physical issues, so I'm hoping for advice here.

I have RA/mixed connective tissue disease and just started seeing an occupational therapist this week, who is going to work on increasing my strength in my arms, which she says have gotten extremely weak, and has also given me some compressive gloves to wear at night to reduce my hand swelling.  I look forward to seeing the changes there, but primarily now need help with some things that I thought my fellow MTs could help with:

1.)  Ergonomically, I've got a decent desk and chair, but am going to get something better in the future, after I move into a larger home.  Any suggestions on where to look for the best desk ergonomically?  My OT even suggested the articulating arms, but I like resting my arms on a desk - so perhaps an executive desk would be best for me.

2.)  Chairs.  This is always an issue with me.  I have a nice chair with massage, but still not very comfortable.  I also need a way to elevate my legs, as they are severely swollen and uncomfortable.  Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to use a reclining chair with a foot rest - but wonder if you have any ideas here, too?

Thanks so much for any help you can offer.  I know it will get easier as time goes on, but for now I'm really struggling so am having a hard time getting going in the mornings b/c I'm up late the night before getting my minutes in, etc., so it's just a viscious cycle.  Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Any suggestions for
My feet tend to swell while I'm working. I alternate feet while I'm working and try to alternate propping them up, but they still tend to feel swollen, especially by the middle/end of the day.  I was thinking support hose, but I don't know, any suggestions?

What about Italian sausage subs with onions and peppers? Or a "sub" night with all sorts of assorted deli meats and cheeses, with all the fixings?
What about making slow-cooked BBQ pork ribs in the crockpot?
What about a "breakfast" dinner with eggs and smoked sausage?
A salad night with chicken, tuna, potato, macaroni, and green salads? My husband loves those during the summer. Then we have leftover salads for lunches the next day.
What about shepherd's pie with ground meat, mashed potatoes, and some type of vegetable (peas, or green beans, or corn) layered?
What about an "assemble yourself" chef's salad with all the fixings including pieces of grilled chicken and assorted cheeses and dressings?
Hope these suggestions spark some new ideas for you. :)

Thanks everyone..there are some really good ideas on there..

Most of all, "thanks, KB" for sticking up for me! I agreed with everything you had to say and appreciate you!
My suggestions are...sm

I love exercise videos and have just about everything you can think of.

Some good beginner videos are Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds, Tamilee Webb's I Want That Body, Kathy Smith's Lift Weights to Lose Weight II, and Iron Yoga.

Also, beachbody.com has great videos.  I have done Slim in 6, Slim Series, P90, and I'm currently working on P90X.  For your situation, Slim in 6 and Slim Series would be great.

I buy most of my videos on Ebay.  You might want to check there first before buying new.

My local library also has exercise videos.  In fact, that's what got me interested in them.  I tried almost all of their videos and I purchased the ones that I loved.  Try checking with your library to see if you can get them there.
