When you get older, more anxiety?

Posted By: Linda on 2006-09-25
In Reply to: Many of us do in this kind of at-home, isolated job. Gets worse as you get older, too. nm - Yup

I am in the 60s now so don't know about it getting worse. Am looking forward to a high school reunion this weekend. I only have anxiety if I have to speak in front of a lot of people or even stand on a stage in front of people. I love my home and so love being able to work from home but as far as anxiety escalating in later years, ?? same as before for me.

No anxiety from this old gal, at
52 menopause keeps me warm and toasty.
anxiety
I too have always been on the shy side, and it's not that I don't like people, it's just that I hate being in social situations where there are lots of people, like weddings for example.  I only go to those events if I absolutely have to.  For me it is not lack of self esteem.  I feel I have a lot to offer.  It is just that I have more of a quiet type of personality, less outgoing, more introverted.  Sometimes I wish I was a bit more outgoing, but not often and it is definitely one of the reasons I love working at home.
anxiety
But I'm wondering, is it really a "BAD" thing or is just that our personalities are different from really outgoing types? I mean, I'm uncomfortable in a crowd of people I don't know and a little shy. It's just my personality. Is it really bad to be shy to the point where you need medication? I don't feel it is. We are all different with different strengths and weaknesses.
I'm not sure if it is anxiety....
I have considered that anxiety could be a possibility, as I definitely experienced it as a child myself. However, it seems to be less likely the cause because he shows no 'classic' signs of anxiety that would make me think otherwise. He is a great kid, no struggles in school (actually he is doing GREAT in school!), normal home life, normal activities, has a Wonderful teacher, etc. I volunteer at his school every Monday in his classroom. I have looked for signs of anxiety while in the classroom as well. He seems perfectly fine, listens well and does his work, and is not clingy with me (which I thought could happen, especially when leaving, but he winks at me from across the room and knows that I'm leaving and is fine with that.) His teacher said he doesn't seem anxious to her either. He is a great reader and he gets up in front of the class and reads to them (this is something I Never would have had the courage to do at this age!) So, I hesitate to think it is 'nerves', but I'm not sure. Thanks for your input! :)
Anxiety
Do you suffer from postmenopausal anxiety? If so, how do you handle it? Am having a terrible problem.
Anxiety
Do you ever awaken in the morning with anxiety? I border on panic some mornings and just HATE feeling that way. I have no medication to help control this, but like you, I could not take anything during the day because I would go to sleep. That would definitely make my work day a bit more difficult!!
Anxiety
Does it ever end on its own?
Anxiety
Has been 5 years now for me. I have been on medication in the past, but decided, because of side effects of meds, to try to handle it alone. Not doing too well with that. Can't seem to get past it. I guess I was hoping you could provide a definitive answer - you know something quick, cheap, and easy, and VOILA - no more anxiety! Oh well!! TKX anyhow and best to you!
Anyone else have anxiety using heat?
I've had to turn on the old heater this past week and I must admit I'm feeling really nerrrrrvous about getting my bill! I'm afraid to keep it on for fear of a thousand dollar charge! Anyone else with "heating bill anxiety"?
Heat anxiety
I live in AZ so our big bills are in the summer for the AC. I moved back to upstate NY for a few years and am back in AZ now. When in NY I almost froze and had huge electric bills, so I bought a little electric space heater and put it under my desk. It kept me toasty all day and I didn't have to crank up the heat in the entire house to stay thawed out. Give it a try! Heating costs have gone up everywhere this year because the poor oil companies really are hurting for money (HA). The little space heater will really do the trick and keep you toasty all winter. What part of the country are you in?
Heat anxiety--here's what I'm trying sm

Hubby wants the furnace on 67--too cold for me but we settled on 68.  Last year we had it at 70.  Our windows this year have all new caulking and loose windows are sealed shut, but that didn't seem to be enough. I bought a bunch of those 4.00 fleece blanket throws 50 x 60 " from Big Lots and some cafe rod clips from Walmart, enough to adequately cover all 20 windows. I cut the blankets in half and put 7 clips on each half, hung them on a standard rod and they cover the windows adequately for me.  If you want more fluffiness, use 1 blanket and 14 rod clips for each panel. It really helps in keeping the sun out of my office which is way too hot during the day being on the south side but then gets cold at nights when I work, so the blankets keep out the drafts. So far, so good.  We'll see if it helps on our gas charges. So far, they have us on budget billing and our bills are 72.00 a month.  Hopefully, they will go down a little more. I'm going to try leaving them up in the summer to see if they keep out the heat and keep in the air conditioning. I priced the thermal rubber backed drapes and they were about 25.00 to 50.00 a window-a little bit more than I can spend right now.

Anxiety attack maybe
I have read some of the other posts and yours. It sounds to me like maybe an anxiety attack, but not a panic attack. Panic attackes are usually more severe like those others have explained. I have anxiety attacks where I cannot catch my breath and cannot talk. My mom has suffered two panic attacks that were much different and more severe. One landed her in an ambulance. Panic attacks are like others have said you feel like you are dying. Those around you may suspect a heart attack or that you are dying when you are actually having a panic attack. My mom did not know where she was or who anybody was. She could not speak or breath clearly. She could not move either. I can understand not having insurance. I have been there. I would monitor if it happens again and when you are able to go see a doctor. We have a discount clinic in our town so maybe you can check into that. They charge a cheaper office visit fee.
Maybe he had stool anxiety...nm

anxiety disorder
I'm feeling I have this, though have never been clinically diagnosed.  I get very uncomfortable in large crowds and much prefer being in a setting with just one or two people or even being alone.  I have gotten worse as I've gotten older.  Then again, I really seem to ENJOY my solitude so I'm not certain it's a bad thing completely.
dog anxiety from thunder

We are having record thunderstorms here in NM this  Aug.  My dog is outside in her fenced yard while I am at work in the daytime.  She has a dog house and  a covered area. She goes literally nuts when it thunders.  Sometimes I can get home to let her in, but not always.  The vet gave me Clomiprizine today (50 mg capsules) to give her in the morning.  I don't know, should I try something more natural, or try giving her half. Not sure what to do, don't like the idea of tranquelizing her but she will try to chew through anything to get out and is in danger of hurting herself, or getting run over if she does get out.  Any suggestions?

storm anxiety
I'm in Tampa, the lightning capital of the country, and my poor dog has gone crazy ever since our house was struck by lightning (scared us humans pretty bad too). Storms come up so fast that tranquilizers don't kick in fast enough. My vet suggested turning on music, which helps some. I've also created a safe space for him inside my bedroom closet. If at all possible I wouldn't leave your dog outside. Lots of dogs here panic during storms, get out, and get lost.
social anxiety
Maybe we're loners.

Social anxiety, yes!!
So good to know I am not alone.  Just last night I was at karate class watching my kids and watching all the other moms interact.  This is how it always is for me.  Watching everyone else chat and laugh and have a good time.  I am very uncomfortable in social situations, and it seems like everyone else is not at all uncomfortable.  Feels like I am the only one in the world with this. I don't really want to rely on a med, but I don't know how to get past this.  All my neighbors are very close knit, I am the only one who never interacts or joins in on the get-togethers.  They must think I'm stuck up.  The truth is, I would rather take a beating than go to a block party!  Any ideas on how to get past this?
thanks, i feel better now. yes, the anxiety is something different. nm
,,
Given the extreme nature of your anxiety
plus your other medications, I wouldn't mess with it. Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean there aren't any side effects. The warnings on RxMed say not to take with MAO, SSRI, tricyclic antidepressants or dopamine agonists.

For starters, St. John's wort causes skin photosensitivity, mucus membrane inflammation, and interferes with birth control pills. I don't know if that's a concern for you or not. Kava kava can cause skin reactions, pupillary dilatation, lack of skeletal muscle coordination, and may exacerbate depression.

There are some European studies out there indicating that St. John's wort is effective with mild side effects. Still, I'd avoid taking herbs period with your existing symptoms and medications.
Heat anxiety solution
I have "electricity" anxiety all the time and especially in winter when I use my electric heater. What I do is shut off the power (at the breaker box) to my electric water heater. I turn it on a few minutes before I'm going to wash dishes or take a bath. I also keep all the lights off except in the room I am working in. I am single so I am able to do this without an argument from anyone.
Anyone have social anxiety disorder?
nm
Psych reports/anxiety
This might help;  When nurses attend college, one of the first thngs they are told is "do not identify with patients' symptoms"!  It might be worthwhile talking to your supe, taking him/her into your confidence but the results may be as you anticipated.  Psych can be upsetting, especially if you are compassionate.  If no help from supe, the Valerian is a good idea, or a cup of soothing tea and trying not to relate - if you can, "block."
So much anxiety that I haven't even turned heat on

Left out depression, anxiety, becoming a hermit...
.
Certain antidepressants/anti-anxiety meds also attribute to being antagonistic.
dd
I agree.. I would be working from home even if I didn't have anxiety attacks!
Thanks for sharing!
Not only are you older (sm)
but you're wiser too! And, yes, you are hopelessly out of it. These poor kids are racking up so much debt with this silliness! Of course, the limited selection of appropriate clothing doesn't help either. I'd love nothing more than to go into the girls' section and find a pair of shorts that have more than two inches of fabric in the crotch! But that is another subject.....
since I am 18 (much older now)....sm

Sounds like you need to find a good one, #1, and #2, one who really specializes in the cervical spine (mine does - he does it all, but he really specialiizes in the head and neck).

Hope you feel better very soon!!!

Older seems better to me
I've edited tons of MTs and I feel the older ones are usually wayyyy better!! Grammer, punctuation, medical terminology, reliability, the whole thing!
I got $1.00 says I'm older than you LOL
but I don't trust the corporate news primarily because their MAIN function is to frighten, titillate, and distract.

If you want to get a handle on all that fear, do more research on just how much and how often your government is lying to you with regard to foreign policy (and domestic as well).

9/11 was preventable - but your government would rather use the fear generated from it to SCARE people into submission than wage any proper investigation. If anyone thinks the official story is the WHOLE story, they must be smoking crack.

I am *rarely* scared, but I spend a lot of time being upset at the corruption in our government - and how easily good people believe just about any story it chooses to tell (via the corporate media)...

:)
No not really. I look older but not fatter.

How old is John Travolta anyway.  He was so cute in Grease too.  Loved his dancing and now I just wonder if he has the same moves since he gained weight.  He didn't look all that bloated in Pulp Fiction either.  It's just lately he has looked too heavy for his frame.

And what do you consider an older woman?

I can assure you that I'm not an older woman.  Thirty is not old.  I still get carded buying alcohol.  I've never bleached my naturally blonde hair either.  The clothes aren't skimpy.  I have full coverage with nothing hanging out.  I certainly don't shop in the plus or women sized departments either.  It's just a change from slob mode, which is the point I was trying to make.  Women will feel and look younger by taking a few moments to care about their appearance.  Try some trendier clothes, a new hairstyle, a touch of makeup.  Besides, if I was a fat, ugly, old lady as you're implying, troll, hubby would tell me.  He's the one who didn't like my "comfortable" work clothes to begin with.

I have an older model sm
Can't use it while I'm typing. If I crank the massage action up so that my back feels good, then there is too much vibration and I literally cannot focus on the monitor. I am not sure if the newer models are like this or not.
BTW, just FYI, my kids are a tad older...sm

than your older children.....25 and 23....didn't want you to think I'm a real old biddie....*lol*

Hope you resolve things....sounds like a family therapy would help solve because if you don't resolve....these buildups you get....will continue until you die.  Best get into some therapy - it works WONDERS if one applies it!  *S*

Best of luck!!

I WAS only joking, I'm a yr older than U..sm

Sorry if I offended you, I was joking because I'm older and I do read many blogger sites of much older, more journalistic type writers, and famous people who are also bloggers.

Again, sorry for any offense taken, none was meant!

well I'm older than y'all and I can tell you....sm

I got less than a decade on you but it starts happening around 40+ (*winks at the 39 y/o poster) and it happens.  At 40, I started writing down lists, whereas prior I never needed a list (to go shopping, let's say).  About halfway through my 40s, it was "where are my keys and/or my eyeglasses" things.  I talked to a bunch of women who confirmed this (older than me).  Now, I do the room - "why did I just walk in here?" - thing.

I try not to worry about it.  I had a dad (who died nearly 2 years ago at a very old age and more than twice my age *S*) whose short-term memory was not great from his 60s on into his 90s, but his long-term memory was so EXCELLENT that he could tell you a story about a horse, his neighborhood, and a situation that he experienced at 5 years old (an emotional trauma) with such clarity and lucency, you could picture the entire situation yourself.  That, in and of itself, amazed many!

So, don't beat yourselves up about this stuff.  There are lots of books out about this very subject.  When you think about these things, well....what's the alternative?  (I'm thinking some extra serotonin *LOL*) - but really, these things will occur and I'm not choosing the alternative, that's a given (i.e., death).  *LOL*  So, I'll live with these challenging things happening and try not to kick myself every time I mess up.

I will tell you I am much better about my keys and eyeglasses today because I made places for them to sit (if I remember to not toss them wherever *LOL*)

You are all not alone, that's a given too

I have noticed this myself as well, although I am a little older than you (49). SM
My short term memory has been declining. Just nice to know somewhat else has noticed this too. Not all in my head.
In your older computer you probably already
put a lot of stuff into the dictionary/spellchecker, which unless you have a backup of the directory you have to start all over again.
It is actually not an older program. One of our sm
hospitals just got it and it is the newest version. It is one of the ones that has been around the longest, but they are constantly changing and improving it. I have a few MTs that hate it, a few that love it and a few that could care less either way. Like anything else, it is a matter of personal preference.
Older generation?
I am a little bit younger than the flower children, and I know a lot of our politicians and CEO's are "old". I agree with you about where this country is headed. I also agree that it is time for a change. However, I am not sure you can count on the younger generation to bring this about. My experience with most young adults around now is that they are more self-centered than any generation before. There are more young adults still mooching off their parents than ever in history. Also many MTSOs in business today are younger people who see the global economy as an easy way to get rich without putting in the time to build wealth through hard work. There is a lot more that can be said about that.
Unless you have an older computer all you need to do
is stick the flash drive in a USB port. I go into Windows Explorer and click and drag my file into whatever drive the flash drive is. Very easy to do. I would not want to use a flash drive either unless the teacher is going to download it immediately and give it back.
We have 3 receivers. Two are older ones

where you pretty much have to point the remote directly at the box.  The newer one where you can be anywhere in the room is DRD435RH.  This is about 4 years old, so I would think the DVR should be able to do the same thing.

We have favorites, but at least 2 other options, maybe 3, where you can block certain channels so it is like having favorites.  I like the DIY type channels and DH does not.  It has my channels blocked as he is a surfer and blocking mine eliminates having to go through all mine.  When I want to watch I switch to all channels.

If you go to Direct's website they might have the info more detailed.

Which one did you get...the older one or the newer one?
The ergopro is the newer one and has a USB connection.  The older one has a PS/2 connection.  The older one is far better in my opinion.  Lot of good reviews on the older Belkin board on both Amazon and Newegg.  Excellent key touch but it is a loud keyboard just to warn you.  I loved it and still continue to use it but I found that it was harder for VR because it is a big keyboard so I using a smaller split board now.  The only disadvantage to the Belkin ergoboard older model is the key markings wear off quite quickly.
it was supposed to be the older one, SM

but the seller sent me a plain, flat, dirty keyboard!  I was sooo mad.  Fortunately I complained enough and sent him copies of receipts from Amazon showing it was supposed to be the Belkin ergo (he insisted he clearly stated what he was sending) that he has finally agreed to send my money back.

So, as soon as he refunds my money (I got an e-mail from Amazon saying I should be getting it soon), I will look for the older one that you are talking about.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! :)

Chickadee

Use older version
Thanks Renee.  I have already uninstalled and reinstalled so many different versions and none of them work.  I tried to convert the .dss file using that convert program, I forget what it is called, it's free from NCH, but it wouldn't convert it.  But I will try it again and let you know what happens.  Thanks again for your ideas.
Like everything else, older ones work the best
I do have one very old keyboard that I have on hand -- just in case but the only thing I don't like is it is not wireless and it still has all the keys on it.  I think it is from my very first computer.  Justs like us "old broads" the don't make them like they used to and the newer ones just don't last.
I usually feel bad for the older

I also feel bad when I see an older person eating alone at a restaurant.  When I say older, I mean 75+.  I feel like inviting them to sit with us, but that would be too weird.

I also feel bad for people with no insurance or people that will not fill scripts because of the cost.

This is the only profession that the older
you get the less money you make.  I hate it too and looking to get out!!
Assuming it's XP or older
Hit the Windows logo button, go into control panel, and from there click on appearance/themes. Go to choose a screen saver. From that window, the bottom half has the power saver options; I believe it says monitor options, but it will also include the options for your hard drives. In there, you can find the choices as to whether or when to shut down the hard drive, hibernate, time to turn on the screen saver, etc. Vista is probably similar steps, but I'm not sure how exactly you get to the screen saver page.

Hope that helps!
Many single older people need help, too.

I knew a lady who had lived with a man for 30 years.  He got Alzheimer's and his daughter had him declared incompetent.  She threw this lady out of the house she had lived in for those 30 years (common law marriage not recognized here).  No one could find a will, so this lady was on the streets for all intents and purposes.  She called me one afternoon to ask how much I would charge her a month for rent (she had only social security,  minimal) to live on, had Parkinson disease, heart problems,  diabetes, etc.  Knowing she was a proud lady and I was working in a hospital at the time, I told her I would charge $50.00 a month for food, but if she helped clean the house and cooked in exchange for rent, that would be great.

She lived with me until her death 7 years later.  My mother had passed away about a year earlier, but this dear lady became my best friend and my substitute mother.  I was compensated in ways you never will never know, but monitarily it was wonderful.  She was a wonderful seamstress and could knit, so after that I rarely if ever had to buy any clothes, just some yarn or fabric.  My mother had spoiled me completely, my late husband had spoiled me, and then I had the wonderful fortune of having this lady as my friend who took over where they left off.

Before she called me, she had rented a room in a cheap motel and it took all her money.  She went to the local food bank to try to get food, but they told her she was not eligible because she had no children.  It would take several months for her to become eligible on medicaid.  Her medications cost so much that she would have to pay 100% by September because she had exhaused her medical benefits, so I bought those for her - unless I could convince a few doctors on staff to help by getting drug reps to contribute a few for her.  Is this what we do to our senior citizens?

I am not asking for praise.  I just think it is time that we all look around and see what is happening.  There are a lot of people in this world who need compassion and help, and we really should do what we can to ease their discomfort.
