If you continue to "work and cover your shift" without getting paid on time, you are sending a message to the people responsible that you can be taken advantage of... Politely but firmly ask for an explanation. If you make it clear you cannot accept delayed payments on a routine basis (if at all) and they value your work, then they will try harder to pay you on time.
