long and short term fixes
Keep ants from coming back by washing the area they were invading with ammonia to kill the scent they leave as a trail.

White flour (the kind you bake with) put over an ant hill (thick coat)or on the floor where they are invading, etc. will make the ants move to another place, but does not kill them, but is fast for getting rid of a big colony in your back yard.

Green Light is a commercial product that will kill the ants like Tarro does, but is not as fast as making them move somewhere else.
If you need short-term long distance...
while searching for a new long distance plan, you can try onesuite.com.
short term cure ...
OK thank you to the responders, I am going with a hot cup of coffee and extra sweetener .... knowing I am NOT ALONE helps, too!   Thanks a bunch -- now down the hatch and onto SOME NEW THOUGHTS ..... !
I don't know about renting short term,
I think you could rent it and then return it, but you would have to ask. A friend of my rented-to-buy a Dell PC from them and learned a lesson. She paid approx. 200 every two weeks for almost a year. You will pay 3-4 times what the product is actually worth.
If you have a short-term disability

policy (from your company or if you happen to have one on yourself) you should be covered.  If not, you are probably out of luck as far as disability goes.

I'm not sure what type of disability you're asking about.  If you mean long-term disability you'd have to have a policy in place for that also and I think it kicks in 6 months after your disability date.

If you meant Soc Security disability, I can safely say you wouldn't be covered.  You have to be permanently disabled for that.

You can usually purchase short-term disability from
your employer if they offer long-term disability. When it is offered, you usually choose the reimbursement rate, typically up to 70% of your pay.

Savings. LOL That's the way you'll make up the difference. Sadly, disability insurance (LT or ST) has never covered 100% of missing pay.
Short-term memory problems..sm
My SIL gave me a sign a few years ago that hangs in my office that says, "I think I am going through mental pause!"   I use sticky notes to make many lists, too.  You're not alone!
Short term memory shot to Hades
So sorry, Rad MT - I could not remember for the life of me who suggested making shortcuts for capitalized terms!

I did all the vertebral levels, except thoracic spine levels 2-11 'cause when do you ever type anything pertaining to the middle of the thoracic spine? HA! That's all I had today! Now I will go back in and make shortcuts for the rest of the thoracic spine.

Thanks for that tip.
There are some short-term insurance policies out there that cover you betweens job but do know that
they will not constitute as having "real" insurance thus the same has having had no insurance for those few months. I stupidly got a short-term policy for three months until my new insurance would kick in and it ended up not meaning anything to my new insurance. I had to wait a year for my preexisiting. This was Regence Blue Shield and others could be the same way. If nothing else, get a cheap high deductible plan ASAP to kick in right away if you dont want to take the Cobra.
It will be long-term, because you are SM
learning to change a whole lifetime of the way you look at situations, but it should be very helpful for you.  Agree, sometimes rehashing the old stuff (if you have accepted that it was what it was and it's not still happening) can be nonproductive in a way and very traumatic.  I have done all types of therapy except analysis (and analysis is an even longer process) and the cognitive therapy was the most helpful for me.  Good luck.
Long-term BTS employee

I have worked for BTS for 2 years and enjoy it!  It is difficult waiting for that first check, but you are being paid for the previous pay period, not the one you have just finished.

Overall, I think they are very considerate towards work load, time off, and I enjoy the people I work with on my accounts.  People are always complaining on here about not having work, but we never seem to have a shortage.

There are no long-term contracts
I've rented from them several times, both paying off items and giving some items back when I got something to replace it. You can expect to pay two to three times the price (if not more) for an item then if you just went and bought the item outright which to many sounds outrageous, but some of us don't have the money to fork over for more expensive items. I had a good experience with them each time I rented from them whether I kept something for the whole time or I turned the item back in.
antibiotics long term

The dr. states the patient has been on chronic antibiotics ???pressure??? to ensure that the hip does not become infected.  I know there is a term for this, but it is not coming to me.  Help

Thanks!

I'm an IC for a long-term client; need advice pls SM

They have implemented a new ftp server that I cannot access through my work computer (Windows 98); however, I juggled around with newer operating systems (Windows 2000 and XP) and can access the ftp server. We are supposed to send completed files to this ftp server (which is a great idea and one we should have been doing all along).

My problem - I have been in nearly weekly contact with this MTSO about not being able to access the ftp site with my work computer. They told me to disable my firewall (which I am not about to do) and frankly the reason they haven't corrected my situation is because I am the only MT who is having this access problem (I am not - I talk to a couple other MTs with this MTSO and they are having the same exact problem). My Internet Explorer is the most current version (I have a cable modem) so that wasn't the problem either (another of their suggestions).

Today I get an e-mail from the office manager of the MTSO. They're going to start docking my paycheck (did I mention I am an IC?) if I don't start using this ftp site. What do I do? I am not making THAT much money that I can go out and spend $500 for a new work computer just to access this ftp. It really fries me that I have e-mailed, phoned, etc. and nothing is happening...it's just "my fault." So any suggestions? Great way to start the weekend, I tell ya!

does anyone know anything about long-term disability insurance?(sm)
How long is considered "long term"?  If you get some sort of disability that takes you out of the work force for years, does long-term disability cover that?  TIA
I love TransHealth. There are many, many long term MTs...sm
with the company who are also very happy. Benefits are great. Good platform. It's acute care work, with ESLs, but that's the name of the game today.
Long-term skilled unit?
ss
You are too young to be worried about long term, but
xx
Unions may be good for workers short-term, but look what has happened to American car union workers.
They priced themselves out of the market while making an inferior product. Ford and GM are now junk bonds. I'm driving a Toyota. So if that's un-American just like shopping at a non-union store like Walmart, well you can talk to whoever is in charge of wages and taxes who have created this monster where even middle-class has very little extra money to support a union store where the employees are paid well and you pay the price in the product they sell. I can't afford it.
This lady is well know in the MT community and is a long term MT. I understand

your skepticism, but that is not the case with this gal. She has been straightforward from the very beginning and I have practically her entire background.  I would ask that we leave skepticism out of the picture and try to help this family out.

Thank you,

Sheri

I hate the term *transcriptionIST* - too long and feminine
:/
8 is NOT good if never going any higher - good to get the rust out in the short term though

I guess it depends on if it was a long-term affair or a one-nighter sm
Probably would try to make it work because I love him and want my daughter to have her daddy around.
Long short forms vs short short forms

Carla,

A long short form is usually easier to remember. So I would definitely assign the short forms as suggested by Kelli:
SmithCThead
SmithCTabdomen
etc

In most Expander programs you would opt for a short short form as you have to type the whole short form before you can expand.
In Instant Text you don't have to type the whole short form: you type the first two letters of your long short form and then you can type any of the following letters.
So in this case you would type smcth for the first one, smcta, and you may also type smhead, smabd

This is possible when you use the Instant Text marker key to expand. If you use the space bar to expand, you may be better off assigning the initials as suggested in the second response, as you would not be able to "jump ahead".

q. re short-term disability vs state disability

my short-term disability insurance coverage option says it pays when there is no state disability plan.  How does one find out if the state she resides in has such a plan?

Insurances seem like such a racket.  Seems they should not be allowed to take your $ if they are not required to pay-out in the event of a disability.

Thanks for any help.

Here is the long and short of it
Most of the time gross line comes out pretty darn close to 65 characters unless you do addresses and a lot of numbered lists. If you uses lists, you may lose out. If not you will probably gain a little. You will really have to evaluate how your notes are normally set up.

Personally, after being somewhere for 3 years and doing a good job, I would expect a lot more that 8 cents per line gross or otherise. Just me.
short, can't type with them long and also wear
contacts so long nails are a hazard, not to mention a hygiene issue.
I prefer short ones...get sleepy if they are too long
and I have to listen to the dictator drone on and on.
DQS does work with dial-up
I've used dial-up and high-speed, and trust me, you are MUCH better off with high-speed. Even though it is possible to use dial-up, if you have to do a lot of ADT searches, it can slow you down a lot. Also, splitting jobs is slower because you have to wait for the next job to download, the upload is longer, and it's just a waste of time IMO. Also, signing on and off takes twice as long.

Don't be mad. You are definitey better off in the long run and probably will make up that connection fee and modem cost soon.
Don't think dial-up would work...
even accelerated. It's just too slow and undependable. Have you thought of getting Internet using an air card from your cell phone provider? To be honest with you, I don't have much knowledge on them, but I do know that friends who have them say they rarely have trouble with their Internet service and they are as fast as DSL for them. It may be worth checking into. Here they run about $60 a month for service.
I work at home with Dial-Up
I work for MQ with the DQS platform. It works find, just takes a little longer than with the DSL.
Are you trying to say you work on DocQScribe on dial-up????

And I had to pay for connection fee and modem for the DSL????

I hope I am misunderstanding you!grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

How do you may Escription and dial up work?

Are there any MTs/VR MTs out there using Escription with dial up?  If so, please tell me how to get it to work becuase I have Escription on my computer, but I cannot get the first dictation downloaded.  If there is a setting somewhere that I need to change for my dial up connection please tell me.  I am begging.

Thanks so much

Escription and dial up..Will it work?

How do you make Escription and dial up work together?  I have a slow connection and I can get short dictations but no long ones.  Does anyone have any advice for me?

tx

Escription and dial up..Will it work?
What type of system are you working with. Editscript and satellite or dialup are not always the best combination.
Use of WiFi versus dial-up for MT work

Hi all,

Posted this on the technical board as well and just wanting to get some imput -- I just moved to an area were the ONLY options for me are dial up or wireless internet.  One of the companies that I work for "gave me the go-ahead" to be able to use wireless, but with the advice to have dial-up available as a "back-up".  The other company said that it really wasn't that stable.  I am in clear view of the wireless tower and about 5 miles away.  I have had both cable and DSL in the past, and have had times when my cable would go out for hours, due to "various reasons".  What I am trying to find out is why wireless is considered "so unstable" when I feel that some of the other high-speed internet connections are just as unstable and if there ARE medical transcriptionists out there that do use wireless and what their experience has been with it.

TIA

WiFlyer - Wireless dial up - does it work?

I found something called WiFlyer for "wireless dialup".  I think you plug it into your phone jack and then a little antennae to your notebook and you can move around the house freelying without a phone cord.  I wonder if it makes dial up any faster?  Has anyone used this?  What did you think?

Thanks

my dial up works for the company I work for

I work for a company that uses MP Word.  They have an edition that is made to work with dail-up.  I just get the first dictations downloading, make coffee, clean the kitty litter, read e-mail or whatever.  Then once that initial  batch is downloaded, when I have about 10 minutes of dictation left, I just request more work and keep on typing.  I almost never have to wait for work after that, I just keep downloading as I type.

I only have dial-up, I work for a small local MTSO -sm
that uses a FTP site to send us our work, so dial-up is just fine for that (work is about a 20 hour TAT, so it does not matter how long it takes for me to download my work, and uploads are quick. So obviously a job that has no set hours, etc. is ideal for someone with dial-up. Also get your own accounts, then it doesn't matter does it as you are the boss. I have 1 account of my own and we transfer the files via the internet through an intermediary website (in place of a FTP). Just keep hunting there are dial-up jobs out there.
C-phone help! Dial tone ok, but keys will not work.

There is a dial-tone when handset is lifted.  Keys do not work to program, dial, ect.  This is the same for 2 different units.  Any suggestions?

I was told I would dial directly into the system/Will I need to get dial up internet service?

In short, because you work in the healthcare industry. sm
Hospitals don't shut down for the weekend, so neither can we. I don't like it any more than you do, but I understand the need. This is not the job to get into if you need full weekends off. Well, at leat not working for a national MT co.
We have a separate work type for Short Stay
Usually the summary looks almost like a DS, but sometimes they start out like an H&P, where they appear to be dictating a combination H&P and DS.
I used Short Keys, not Short hand for Bayscribe, it worked fine.
x
IC sets their own hours. As long as the work is done by the deadline, you decide when to work.

Ditto, short ERs or short OPs....short anything! sm
And I especially don't like long OPs, they are the most boring for me, and the doctors pause a lot cause they have to think more. I just want to be done with it! Next!!! ; )
...that's as long as you do this work. nm
s
How long do you need to work as an MT...
to be considered "seasoned"...my Editor called me seasoned and I have been at it since October of 2006.  I cracked up!!!
As long as QA is up to par, that could work - sm
but in past experience I've had to deal with some pretty shady QA people. In one case, the *rules* changed almost daily, so you were damned if you did, and damned if you didn't: a lose-lose situation. With regard to TAT, I've been given warnings about work being out of TAT, when it was already out of TAT when it was given to me. So even though the reports were typed within minutes, I was still *warned* about being out of TAT. Finally, I've had QA people *correct* words, changing them from being spelled correctly, to being spelled incorrectly, and we had no way to appeal this. Then, when review time rolled around, we'd see the *mistake* (made by QA, not by ourselves) reflected in our reviews & our pay scale. Worst of all, we had one QA-person once that used to arbitrarily add or remove ENTIRE SENTENCES from reports that we had typed correctly, or change punctuation in such a way that it changed the meaning. We had no recourse against that, either. Since those QA problems directly affected my ability to get a bonus, or even to earn a living, needless to say, I left. So if *punishment* is going to go along with what QA finds on reports, then QA has to be almost above reproach. With the peanuts that editors & QA are being paid these days (along with the rest of us!), getting top-quality people can't be easy. Also, in order to keep QA *honest*, and not promote greed on their part (at the expense of MT wages), the QA people should probably be paid on salary or hourly, NOT on production.
how long did you work for them?
I have never had any problems with her.
As long as the work gets done, and . . .
all MTs have enough work, I don't see whay anyone, including the MTSO OR the other MTs, would care.
