unfortunately, there aren't many MTSOs out there who will confront a poor dictator and nip it in the bud to begin with.
In the old days we used to do this all the time. A doctor was put on report and told to shape up and if he didn't he would either be charged more because they had to pay an MT more to do his lousy dictation, or he was always given the option to do his own reports if he wouldn't comply.
Believe it or not, almost every physician my former company did this to straightened up their act became good dictators and found that it was actually less stressful and less time consuming for them too!!
The MTSOs just don't have the guts to do this anymore... and they should. I can make more money on good dictators with a lower line rate than crappy dictators at a higher rate, and would rather have the better dictators and lower rate than the other... it's a win-win for both the MT and MTSO because the MT is making more money per hour and the MTSO gets to pay less for her MTs and make a better profit. I can't believe the MTSOs haven't figured this one out.

Why would a doctor be such a good QA?
Even if this was a real post, the last person I would want editing my reports would be the darn doctors! The reason we need editing most of the time is because of their sorry dictation! They might know the medical terms, but they cannot spell, they cannot make complete sentences, they cannot use punctuation correctly!

doctor or would MTSO rather try to find anther MT, train that MT and maybe not be happy with that MT's work. I say better to stay with MT you know than take risk of an unknown MT. I have had dr. I hated and asked to be off that doctor. It took a little bit for them to find replacement but I was taken off that acct and placed on another. It is hard to find good MTs. Better to keep a good MT for all the other work she does than get rid of her over one doctor, who the MTSO knows is a pain in the rear.

What happent to the MTSO that pays what a good MT is worth.
I'm tired of the MTSO that promises great pay, nice dictators, affordable insurance, etc. 90% is all bull. On what planet is 8cpl or less great pay. You either have WAY more ESLs that you admit to or you have EFLs that talk out their rears. Be honest with your ads!
You must live in Calif - finding a good old doctor is nearly impossible here.
It amazes me. But, it is true. The stories I have heard are heartbreaking.
I blame it on the cap they placed on malpractice suits. Doctors here are complacent. In my town, we go to Stanford or UCLA for serious illnesses. It is well worth the drive.

I definitely think they are one of the best out there. We also have been talked through issues over the phone and also had a warranty in which they came out and fixed it right at our home. My only complaint..and I am sorry for saying this.. but... when you call their customer service 9 out of 10 times...you get someone who barely speaks English and I just hate that. I think that is true of a lot of customer support centers these days, ironically they are rarely American anymore. I am not prejudice at all. I just find it frustrating to call in for help and the help you get barely understands you and you do not understand them, thus making the experience very frustrating..
Expensive is right -- around $300 per credit hour! But they do have a good rep. Good luck! nm

but I live in the northeast and not much need for that where I live. I also live in a small town so that limits my options. I have spent the last couple of years as a substitute teacher to supplement my MT job and just completed 4-1/2 months as a long term sub which I enjoyed and was a change of pace from MT. The only problem is as a sub or ed tech you only get paid during the school year so I would have to keep my MT job for summers and school vacations. With the way things are going in the MT world I hate to rely solely on that. I don't want to find myself without any job whatsoever.

a newbie and you still have to look up lots of words .... The very first day I typed, with absolutely no education way back when, when you didn't have to have a degree/certificate or previous experience, I typed 665 lines. This was without an expander and I was not a fast typist. I can do 1000 lines in about 4 hours now on average.

honey, it works like this: The MTSO(service) charges the doctor X amount per line or report, and
takes part, gives you the rest. Therefore - the MSTO(or service) decides your pay.
If you are paid 8 cpl, surely you do not believe the service charges the doctor 8 cpl - do you?
This is not a good choice. There are too many good schools
that have proven their worth. Andrews, MTEC and even Career Step, but I would not choose a school that has spammed the internet in every crack there is as the one you have mentioned. Find some graduates and see what they have to say. Go to mtchat.com and do a search of this school.

I know that what you are doing is a major undertaking. Just remember that this is what you want and that you CAN do it! It won't be easy by any stretch of the imagination, but once you have accomplished it, you will truly know what you are capable of. I think you are very brave. Please know that all of us are pulling for you and are here to help you if you need it. Go to the hospital if you are feeling at all unsure or unstable. It sometimes takes longer to learn ESL docs and is a pain in the butt, but all that does not kill us makes us stronger!! I don't love doing ESL docs by any means, but if I want a job - I need to do what my employer asks of me. Take the good and bad - or find a new job! I applaud you for working with your MTs, but you really shouldn't have to! I have only been an MT for two years and I cannot imagine telling my boss that I am not willing to learn something. How rude!

Many many crappy jobs for me
1. Emergency Room admissions clerk in a back-woods hospital in rural Western Pennsylvania dealing with drunks, freaks and worse on the 11-7 shift while working with a bunch of angry, nasty shrews who hated life in general and were too busy hating the rest of the staff to pitch in and actually do any work.
2. Working in medical records department of another back-woods Western Pennsylvania hospital (family owned and operated, I kid you not) where the medical records director was the 30-something girlfriend of some 90-year-old racketeering buddy of the hospital's owners and she got hired as MR department director directly from the bangle bracelet counter at the mall.
There are more but these two stick out in my mind the most.

someone's ability to responsible by their credit report, especially in these times when you can make the same amount of money as you have been and have just the basics (no luxuries) and everything has gone up and you scrape to make ends meet. I know many people like this now. I've even read articles on how people are in worse credit card debt than ever because of what I just described and they're bridging the gap by having to charge x amount each month to get by. It's very sad. Because one's credit is poor most often isn't because of a lack of responsibility or willingness to pay, just life happening.

many take the course because it is cheap compared to the good schools, but it ends up costing more when they can't get a job and need further schooling/training.
Have you posted your resume on the job boards?
Knowing about foot pedals or other equipment is no big deal, what you need to know is the terminology, good grammar, research skills are things you need.
You can look for a mentoring program. Some companies will pay you a minimal amount for any work you do. There are some companies who want you to pay a monthly fee. I don't know the names of companies, but there are companies that are not legit, so be sure and ask about them.
You could also apply to local clinics/doctor's offices, and hospitals. You would have to work on-site, but that is the best training you can get.

A good QA will not do that. Where are you working that you have such bad QA personnel? I'm not wanting to go to that company, lol.

isn't the only reason for QA. You'd be surprised at the crappy work that some MTs do and QA corrects the errors so they bad work isn't going to the client. Some MTs don't feel the need to proof their work, believe that is what QA is for.
