That is exactly what the vet was trying to tell me - that is what she got pyometra.  I have spent my last two days off reading everything I could about it.  The vet told me that at her age, she was high risk of developing peritonitis even if I elected for the surgery, and he said she probably had cancer too.  When I get over this grief and get another dog, it will be spade or neutred immediately.  I hate that I had to learn about this the hard way, and I am so glad you were able to have your baby girl treated.  How much was the surgery if you don't mind my asking?  They wanted 1500.00 and made sure I fully understood that it would be a high-risk surgery and that she would more than likely have complications.
