Captions
Captions are done with the use of stenograph machines using a shorthand, the same as court reporters use. I am currently using my steno machine to do medical transcription, which makes me a pretty good living. To do captioning real-time you have to write almost perfectly, which I don't, so I would never apply for such a job, but for me where I can go back and edit if necessary it works out just fine.
closed captions!
I put the TV on mute, but with closed captions on while I type. I hear with my ears, but read the tv with my eyes. I amaze people with this - and have been doing it for a decade!
Is the mute button on your keyboard engaged?

You can tell if the volume is on mute by right clicking on the little volume icon at the bottom right hand of your screen, next to where the time is displayed.  Click on "Open Volume Control" and make sure nothing is checked off in the little "mute" boxes.  That's where I'd start first anyway...not that I have any first-hand experience in that particular matter

if pressing the mute button doesn't sm
work are you sure it hasn't been hit by lightening? I was told by the repair guy that when you get done using the C-phone you should always unplug it from the phone jack. These things get hit very easily and sometimes you don't even realize it until you go to use it. I am testimony to that as I have fried three of them!!!!!!!!
I bought a TV. I keep it muted, but keep the captions on (sm)
That helped me stay in the chair and produce extra. Something about even being able to look over every now and then and see something happening helped tons.

Having a busy life outside of MT, getting out of the home regularly, makes a lot of difference, too. I'm not quite sure why.
Typing Captions for TV&Movies
Does anyone here type captions?  I want to know more about this, as I was watching TV w the captions on and wondering who types the words.   I wonder if you just get to watch TV and type what you hear all day long...that would be so sweet.
