They have to give you ample notice - e.g. 24 hour notice for mandatory OT in some states.  They also have to pay time and a half your line rate or your hourly rate.  Also, in most states, you have the right to refuse to work OT so many times a year without the company having any recourse for the refusal, where I am it is 2 days a month you can refuse and the company can't fire you for refusing to work it.  Some companies have specific company policies outline their specific way of mandating it.  I have found most companies get more if they say voluntary OT is open to any takers instead of mandating it.
