Your laptop (assuming it was purchased anytime in the last 4-5 years) would have an ethernet physical port (looks exactly like a phone line port except it's wider). This can be used to connect to the ethernet LAN port on your desktop. However, you need to get a cable from someplace like Radio Shack. Tell them what you're trying to do and they'll fix you up with the cable you need.

On the other hand, if I understand your situation correctly, you have another option, which is to get a new wireless access device - probably one that plugs into a USB port on your laptop. They're really not very expensive, and would come with its own installation disk, etc. so you could just forget about the Linksys card and start over. Again, you'd get this from Radio Shack, Staples, etc.

If you do go that way, you'll usually want to run the install CD before plugging in the new device to your laptop, and the install software then tells you when to plug it in.

Personally, I think I'd be very tempted to go with the new device because networking your laptop to your desktop can be tricky - the cable is just the first step.
