You're comparing apples and oranges here, SandyGirl. SM

You're talking employee status in NYC. Some of us are talking IC status where we set our own rates and do the work we're most productive at.

I am settled into a comfortable routine. I know just exactly how much work I have and how long it takes me to do it.

You should really be careful about calling folks liars when you have absolutely nothing to go on but what YOU get paid. It makes you look pretty silly and uninformed.

But that's not comparing apples to oranges.
2000 55-character lines is about 1700 65-character lines. Take away some more lines for unpaid headers, footers, and demographic information, and I could probably do what you're doing. Ah, so! I need to find a better employer that pays for headers, footers, demographics, and by the gross line!
Or rather it IS comparing apples to oranges. LOL

Apples and oranges. sm
Working in-house is quite different than working through a service (though I suppose I *could* hop a plane and fly halfway across the country to confront someone at my hospital). No, as an MT working for a service we don't have that opportunity.

Otherwise, I don't think we're in disagreement. As for the original poster, however, that's an entirely different situation.
I'm done trying to compare apples to oranges. sm
You are free to go on beating the dead horse, however. Best wishes.
What a dumb comparison - apples & oranges
Geez. A lot of people can't spell, and they sure as heck don't belong managing a QA department for medical transcription - correcting other people's mistakes!
you're mixing apples and beans here...sm

Some of us are heavy patriots, sons and daughters of America, but do not like what's going on in D.C.  It's as simple as that.  They are tapping 100,000+ Americans.  Do you really believe that one-third of our country is involved with terrorists?  Doubtful.....not even half that number.  This administration simply TAKES advantage at every turn...in every nook and cranny that they can.

They are the reason the work force across the USA is highly upset, doesn't matter which state, which city, nobody is a happy camper in the regular work force today in the USA.  I blame D.C.

Yes, GOD Bless the men and women who would fight for us to keep us FREE throughout history.  And I will bless the men and women who are fighting today in Iraq

....but know it's over oil....do not delude yourself.

Just one person's opinion......we were ALL duped...approval rating as of yesterday and this includes everyone, whether reps or dems, was 29%....

No not from TTS. I am trying to compare apples to apples
Yes, you could do 400 lph with editing but if you got paid 4 cpl line you have to do minimum 3200 lines in a day vs 1600 a day with 8 cpl for straight typing.  So I am assuming to make more money line count would have to be higher than 3200 a day with editing.  I understand that most companies pay half of what they do for straight typing so that tell me you have to produce twice as much to make the same money???  I cannot figure out if VR is a way to pay the Transcriptionist less overall?  Even though she might be producing 400 lph if she is only paid 4 cpl she might end up making less than if she just did straight typing at 8 cpl.  Unless I have it wrong....
To SandyGirl: MDI pays 10-11 cpl 65 char., sm
Spheris pays 10 cpl + incentive.

FC pays 10 cpl and 11 cpl on weekends - IC status.

QT pays 9 cpl - gross line, IC status.

JLG pays 10 to 12 cpl 65 char.

As you can see, there are companies out there who will pay 10 to 12 cpl, albeit IC status mostly, but they are out there.

I hope this helps you find the right company that pays the "big bucks"!

Merry Christmas!

To me it's a bit like comparing being SM
a clerk to being an executive, if very low level. I know what you mean about staying home because I stopped appraising real estate to "relax" at home with this work. However, if I were you I'd go to school for the RN degree, since that seems to be an option, and then make any further decisions from an enormously improved position. That RN credential is a tremendous asset and can be used many, many different ways, including from behind a desk if wished.
I wasn't comparing, I am asking for an opinion. Thanks anyway. nm

How 'bout comparing us to PA's, RNs, or even doctors? (nm)

This is what I found comparing the 2.....inside
I jumped in 100% enthused to do VR with a good VR program, I really liked the resting of the wrists, etc. I learned the short cuts, implemented every help they gave but what I found was if I have to separate the headings on every op, take out sentences because the doctor changed his mind, add sentences or phrases, change phrases, add a, the, put in whole sentences that VR left out for no rhyme or reason, it didn't matter if I was just reading along and believe me this was a good VR program Ex-Text, I just couldn't double my lines and it drove me crazy all the changes I had to make. If I got 3 good dictations in a row, I found I would 3 bad dictations, and remember, new residents messed it all up all over again, all this for half pay.

I compared them side by side on another computer I finally got a job with another company for straight typing and found I could make $30 to $40 more a day straight typing, that is just average some days it was more. So, even though I liked the concept of doubling my lines to make the same money in less time, I don't think it can happen consistently, for me anyway.

I know these companies going to it push it relentlessly and almost desperately. I don't know why, they can't be taking a 30 to 40 dollar hit per Transcriptionist a day, there has to be some advantage that they push it so hard.

One last thing, I went into VR determined to give it my all and I did, but I was alway 500 lines of doubling my lines. Some days it was just constant changing of things other days 2 out of 3 of changing but no days of not changing dumb things.

how many apples are red?
Who knows how many MTs are happy. and how do you measure happy? I for one, still enjoy my job after 30+ years of doing it, but i do make less money than ever.

There is some standardization in the field that was not there at all when i started MTing. But not all the standards are good ones, and it does not have the overwhelming respect of those in the trenches. Many of us now juggle the BOS (formerly AAMT) standard, a company standard, a client standard and the HIPAA as well as doctor idiosyncracies. Of course, the standards never touched the pay scale or schooling requirements.

In MTing, the appreciation seldom comes in a pat on the back; usually it simply is a self-satisfaction for doign a job well.

My thoughts? Keep doing what we do, better, with faster TATs and eventually the work may come back from overseas. It does not hurt to have a plan B though, esp in this economic environment.
Woof! Just kidding, 2. I was actually feeling bad about comparing
troll posters to cats.  I love cats, so it wasn't really fitting! I can think of a few other comparisons, but don't want to lower myself to "its" level.
You can't compare apples with
oranges as he had lost his job and who knows the real truth. Tragic loss of lives.

Suffice it to say, it's pretty scary out there these days with so much misery over job loss, home loss and no hope in sight. It's like the domino effect. It's all happened so fast and there is no stopping it. Certain people will act out. No doubt immigrants are much harder pressed in times such as these. Even doctors are suffering from this economy. Hard to believe but it is true.

Don't listen to the old sour apples...

However, if you are starting from scratch with no medical background and no training in transcription, you are 2-3 years from making ANY kind of money even IF you can find a job at home.  It's like learning another language, the language of medicine.  If you already have a medical background and have taken terminology, a way to more quickly get into the business would be to find a single doctor doing one specialty, saying the same thing over and over.  However, if you're inexperienced it might be hard to get a doctor to trust you with his transcription.  I don't know anything about your situation, so it's hard to answer.  Any more info?

I vote for Mrs. Prindable's apples!
They're not cheap but you can get a sampler box for a better price and they're individually wrapped. And QVC.com has them too. If you decide not to get them for the teachers, at least get one for yourself! Yummmmmm!

Well, you're all complaining that accounts are current and work is low, so, gee, maybe they're
focusing on WORK, as in CLIENT and transcribing, as maybe half of you should be focusing on!!
If you're experienced, try for 9cpl or higher, and you're lucky to get that! nm

allowing every loser from every 3rd world country on the planet to just stroll on into our country, some legally, most illegally, and take advantage of the social services all us hard working little gerbils pay for by having money taken out of our pay every month. But I don't think we're all lazy. Just the ones on permanent welfare driving around town in brand-new Cadillac Escalades. Saw one just today on the Bayshore Fwy. Brand-new black Escalade with expensive spinner wheels, with 5 or 6 Mexicans in it. Well, who knows - maybe they stole it and it was on its way to a chop-shop. Smart-and-hungry people aren't always hard-working and honest.

You're forgetting all the stuff you can't buy when you're UNEMPLOYED!
Unemployed people have a hard time buying anything, including cheaply made offshore products. How many will have to end up depending on public assistance? That means more tax dollars being eaten up - besides the taxes NOT being collected from the overseas workers. In the long run, are you really enjoying a lower price?

You're not losing it, you're burned out on your main job.
I feel for you... I am having my own "version" ;-) of these kinds of struggles. Lots of recent changes at the admin level have made my job do a 180, going from a really great one to a really crappy one.

For me, it's a struggle to get through the day with a shred of motivation. I get distracted in the way you discuss as well.

I just try to make my environment as comfortable as possible and make the best of it while I decide what the best way is to deal with the burnout... I figure if I can't change my inner brain workings so that I still like this job, I need to find another one, or this feeling will possibly get worse!

I hope it works out for you. Wish I had some better advice for you, but this really does look like burnout and extreme job dissatisfaction to me. We all wear it differently. Try to be good to yourself while you figure out a solution.

Don't know what you're complaint you're making with this post. sm

You stated in your original post that you don't want to work weekends or odd shifts. What is your definition of an odd shift?  Second shift?  Third shift?  Sounds like you want to work M-F on days.  Sounds kind of rigid to me.

Personally I like second shift, so everyone working days means more work for me!

If they're withholding taxes, you're not an IC.
As an IC, you should already be paying taxes. That said, the only benefit having them withhold FICA is that your Social Security/Medicare share will be less. Social Security is 15%; if you're an employee, you pay 7.5% and your employer pays 7.5%. As an IC, you pay 15%. Doing the math, 0.0925 would be your 0.10 minus 7.5%--the 0.0924 is just a tad less than you're making now.
We're out here (good MTs) but we're busy! sm
I don't recall ever taking an employment test where I wasn't offered a job. My MTSO does not even look at my work unless I happen to have a question or a blank, which happens maybe once in every 30 or so reports with an ESL. If you find a really good MT, how much training would be involved? Certainly you would save time in the long run once they're trained and you don't have to check all their work.
If you're one of the MTDesk clan then you're ok
wersdffa
You're right if you're single it's tough.

I am an IC as well, but I have a husband with benefits and makes a fair buck.  I am fortunate after 20 years to able to work from home.  I worked on site for 17 years with a "chocolate cake" the day I left.  Nothing more...  The loyalty in any profession is gone, gone, and gone again.

Most companies want new employees/ICs that will take low pay and that won't cost much in the way of paying vacation time.

I do take every Friday off and try only to get on to check e-mail, etc.

However, I wouldn't trade being here for my kids at this point.

There are headaches no matter what profession you are in.  It seems if it isn't one thing it's another.

Raises?  Out of the question in this profession since most are afraid they will lose the account including myself.  I also underbid my last account because I wanted the account so bad.  I should be charging more.

It is a neverending cycle really.

But, I still enjoy the work, so I guess that's the difference.  It does take will power to sit and type.  Some people need that boss hanging around to keep the production up and the incentive of a nice paycheck is just not good enough.

Good luck with your new job!  Sounds great!

If you're new, good - if you're not a newbie, not so hot
Would need to know how long you have been an MT. For a newbie, this is a pretty good rate of speed.

However, if you have anything over a couple years of experience, then this is not too hot.

Also, what are the dictators like? Is it a "United Nations" account??

If you ARE capable of 200 lph or more and you can't seem to get it, then the problem has got to be with the platform you are using. In my experience, the platform into which you transcribe can make or break your paycheck - so if the platform stinks, then I hate to tell you, but there is no way you will be able to improve your line rate. I have quit jobs because of awful platforms more than once.
You realize by doing that they're making more money & you're making less? You should reconsid

It's just what you're comfortable with and what you're used to.

No, you're not missing anything, but you're really not seeing
anything either. InterFix designs and sets up software specifically to facilitate an easy conversion to overseas transcription.
You're both right and you're both wrong.
There are too many variables to give an accurate--or even estimated--count. Using a standard 1-inch margin, you may have short lines and lots of paragraphs and get a lower count. If no paragraphs and it's a full page of text from margin to margin, you get your higher count. You can't possibly use an average count because of variables, which is why no one can commit to a pat answer.
It says that's why you're QA and we're MT, simple enough?
