She does have to be on a high-fiber diet. They think this might be related to H-pylori, even though she tested negative for it. I told her lets not worry until we have to, easier said than done, but she is a worrier, and yes, I have inherited that from her as well:) I was reading up on this MALT lymphoma and if that's what she has, it looks like it is pretty treatable if caught in the early stages, so we will pray. Thanks again. I will update when I know more. Thanks for posting - means a lot:)

I agree that it's the best thing I've ever done. Being home with my kids has been a huge blessing. I try to give them the reality and I guess I also gauge whether I think they could do it or not with discipline, etc in how much I encourage them. Thanks.

If you're doing clinic work, you would need the book that pertains to your clinic. I'd also recommend a Stedman's Abbreviations, acronyms & symbols. I'd also recommend Sander's Pharmaceutical Book. Other than that, I'd use Google and trustworthy websites.

It depends on what kind of voice files you're playing.
The sound on Express Scribe is terrible. I think it's worth it to find a player that plays your voice files with good sound. If you use wav files, a Bytescribe wav player would be excellent (get the dongle version so you get unlimited installs). They also have a version that converts DSS to wav. I complained about the DSS files not sounding clean on speed up and slow down so they told me about another version they have. If you have a Bytescrive wav player, it's already on your computer. Of if you're using DSS files you could also use a DSS player. (I've never tried them).

Even if you're paid a salary you are your own agent, so to speak. Why not hire a part-time helper and pay them a subcontractor rate. That's what a service owner does. You are no hero for not getting some help. MTs who have their own accounts have responsibility for 7 days a week coverage, but not all of us type 7 days a week. Put an ad in the job seekers board and pay someone to take up the overflow. You will burn out and not be able to work at all eventually. Good luck to you.

But I don't think we're all lazy. Just the ones on permanent welfare driving around town in brand-new Cadillac Escalades. Saw one just today on the Bayshore Fwy. Brand-new black Escalade with expensive spinner wheels, with 5 or 6 Mexicans in it. Well, who knows - maybe they stole it and it was on its way to a chop-shop. Smart-and-hungry people aren't always hard-working and honest.

I don't recall ever taking an employment test where I wasn't offered a job. My MTSO does not even look at my work unless I happen to have a question or a blank, which happens maybe once in every 30 or so reports with an ESL. If you find a really good MT, how much training would be involved? Certainly you would save time in the long run once they're trained and you don't have to check all their work.

Would need to know how long you have been an MT. For a newbie, this is a pretty good rate of speed.
However, if you have anything over a couple years of experience, then this is not too hot.
Also, what are the dictators like? Is it a "United Nations" account??
If you ARE capable of 200 lph or more and you can't seem to get it, then the problem has got to be with the platform you are using. In my experience, the platform into which you transcribe can make or break your paycheck - so if the platform stinks, then I hate to tell you, but there is no way you will be able to improve your line rate. I have quit jobs because of awful platforms more than once.

Actually, they're usually really good kids.
Especially when compared to most of the kids these days. But just like any other kids, they do get bored. This summer has been weird because most of their friends are "visiting their fathers" for the summer, so there's no one around to play with. And it's been unusually hot and rainy, so they're cooped up inside a lot. Besides, they didn't hit me on purpose. They lost a couple of Hot Wheels today, got a lecture about throwing things in the house, had to kiss Mom's head, and did slave duty. Now they're all in bed early so I'm getting a jump on tomorrow's work.
Then you're doing yourself a disservice, just because the sex is good.
Whether you're "committed" or not, you're also miserable and likely so are your children. Too bad.

drinks with very little alcohol that taste really good, like frozen peach margaritas or some of those other fancy drinks. Yum!

Sorry, I don't know of a specific company. Hubby gets benefits, so that's never been a factor for me. I work for MQ right now, which I'm trying to get out of and have started another PT job. That one's good, but it is IC with no benefits. MQ does have benefits, but I really don't know how they are.
I would suggest posting on the company board and asking more specific questions, i.e., what are some companies that have decent insurance, do any companies give paid holidays, etc.
In all honesty, you probably won't find a company that fits all you want. You may have to decide which are most important and go from there.

My platform is down and I'm always up for a good challenge, but I think part of the problem may be is that just a "physical therapy" reference/search site is too general as there are so many facets to PT,such as ortho, cardio, etc. I've looked for a good site for this for over an hour, hopefully someone has one right at their fingertips. and your mother is lucky to have at least one child who is willing to take responsibility and help her. Not that many years ago, extended families were the rule and not the exception. The truth of the matter is that unless a parent dies early, someone (be it a child, grandchild, or an institution) will probably have to take care of that parent (or parents) emotionally, physically, psychologically, and financially. For most of us, our parents cared for us when we were children and when they age the tables turn. I have 2 sisters who are willing to help with my mother but they live in other states and have no plans to move back to our hometown or homestate. Thus, I will be the one who becomes the caretaker.
I think you will have to sit down with your one brother (and his wife if he is married) and ask them for help that is on a more regular basis. Or, alternatively, just call him when you need him to help. Maybe he will get that hint (though he is male and hints go by undetected!).
I hope you find the relief and assistance you need. Take heart in the knowledge that you are doing the right thing.

All customer service is outside of the US and I had a really tough time communicating with them. Also if you choose to discontinue early there's a whopping $90 fee that's buried in the fine print.
I used Vonage with broadband satellite for 2 months and it disconnected frequently on me....my satellite has been stable for years with multiple platforms so I suspect Vonage is just not suited for satellite. Just a heads up!

While I feel empathy for her family wondering what happened and wanting closure, frankly I'm tired of hearing about the case on the news, and that we have tied up FBI and even the military resources to look for her. We have people that go missing in the US every day... and people visiting countries disappear - and you only hear about the ones who have families that are rich or well connected with the media.
In my town there's a college girl who has been missing for over a week and it finally made the newspaper in a small blurb today. This girl missed a flight to visit her family for a vacation and hasn't been seen or heard from since then, and her family says this isn't like her and that she was excited about the vacation. Are they getting the attention this chick in Aruba is getting? No.... because they're an average middle classed family.
Some thoughts on that...
I do know how you feel. There are a few things I've done to cut that type of sress down...
I'm not sure what your company is like, but for mine, we have a primary account, and many people also have secondaries (mine is so busy that I don't usually need back-up work, so I have one major account). It pulls from several clinics, but with a pool of about 20 or 30 dictators, after awhile, you get the hang of even the hardest ones. There are some dictators that are just really bad, and I struggle with. When I can't figure something out, rather than spending 10 hours searching and struggling, I use blanks. I give it a good faith effort, as best as I can, and then I move on. Since I usually clip along at a good pace and am pretty confident in 99% of the work I do, I don't let myself feel bad for sending something to an editor, if I truly don't know what it is. Of course, I do the research, but if I'm looking for something for more than a few minutes, it's been too long.
You may need to look for a different account/specialty or even a new company, if you think that is the problem. I know that, at one point, I ended up moving from a difficult but high-paying account to an account that paid less, but I was more comfortable with. I ended up making more with the lower-paying account, because I wasn't having to stop every 2 seconds, and I wasn't tearing my hair out, and ending up in tears at the end of the day. Of course, people should move up as they feel ready for that, but perhaps you need a workload that doesn't create so much extra work for you.
Those are just some thoughts, but you CAN do it. Be proactive in finding a situation that works for you. You are more of an asset to your job when you are comfortable and not stressing and struggling.

For obvious reasons, I hope it is not true. But it kind of makes sense. I was working on Monday the 5th and was transcribing work from the 2nd, when within an hour, the work was 100% gone! Perhaps they routed all the work from Amherst to Ohio and then offered them unbelievable incentives to get it done. Not sure if that is what they did or not. All I know is the work was gone awfully quick and it has yet to return.

I would want to know what type of docs run the clinic - whether anesthesiologists, physiatrists, ortho, neurology, etc, as this will guide the typical direction of the dictation. Because pain med Rx writing is always under scrutiny, there will probably be a fair amount of repetition for every pt on medicolegal issues. Most, but not all, of my experience is with neuro/physiatry-based pain management. For both these, I found the doc more likely to do further workup, which leads to much longer and involved reports. In the middle would be those docs who do extensive review of the patient's history and only minimal further testing. The extreme other side of the coin are those, what I call, in/out pain clinics where the pt shows up every 30 days, re-signs their drug contract, has their BP checked and leaves with a new Rx. I would always expect the initial H/P to be extensive and the f/u notes relatively brief. Typically lots of phone call documentation and referral/followup letters or information. Anesthesiologists lean more toward a lot of injectable therapies, blocks, epidurals, etc., at least initially, putting more of an op bent on their practices.
As far as interesting, pain patients are very repetitive in their complaints and their needs. Typically, by the time a pt gets to a pain management practice, the cause of their pain has already been extensively worked up. There are true chronic pain sufferers and those who are drug-seeking only. Things do get interesting with the latter because they are very creative when it comes to trying to con or manipulate the docs. If I were in your shoes, my first question would be what speciality of docs run the clinic. As far as job security, it is way up there for legit practices. More often than not, the average family doc is not willing to prescribe pain meds beyond a certain amount of time/quantity and feel forced to refer the pt to a pain management practice in order to protect themselves from the medicolegal aspects of the business.
