they just sent announcements to EVERYONE they knew, in anticipation of receiving $$$ I might add.

I think if this happened to me I would consider the girl. I would consider how she might be planning to spend the money. Will she blow it on partying or is she needing some money for college -- perhaps some of the things scholarships and parents aren't covering. If it is the latter then I would send the money. If they are rich and the girl doesn't need the money I think I would file it in the circular file LOL. Good luck with your decision.
