Yes, it is sad and it is typical of teachers, unfortunately. For the past 20 years, the majority of college students enrolled in Education programs have come from the bottom half of their high school classes. Just 40 years ago, the typical Education major came from the top 20% of their high school class.

Some of this is due to the fact that a few generations ago, smart women who worked basically had 3 choices - nurse, teacher, secretary. Now, with a wider spectrum of choices, smart women are not going into Education as a career.

Do not flame me - I taught for a few years and I know what I'm talking about from personal experience. I also know that there are some great teachers out there, but they are much fewer in number than they used to be.

When truckers make more money than teachers, what do you expect? Why should teachers work for the passion of the job? No one else is expected to put up with low wages because they just love what they do. Treat teachers as professionals and pay them as professionals, and you will attract professional quality.
