How soft is the touch, is it a muffled sound (microsoft used to make a very soft touch keyboard.
You can't buy it anymore and I hate the clacky ones. I think a really soft one sounds muffled when you hit the key. Thanks
Lilly pads. sm
Yep, not surprising that they have several lilly pads because they're growing.  Matter-of-fact, they have an ad posted on MT Stars.  They do have posted EXACTLY what qualifications they're looking for and the available schedules.  Good luck and I hope to see you happily perched  in my lilly pond.
sponge ear pads
Where do you buy these?  I have looked everywhere including Radio Shack and Walmart and can't find them.
Any more lily pads in your pond?

I can't testify to the steno pads

But when I started I used tapes and a selectric typewriter with 3 carbon copies.  We used to use a scapel blade to correct the carbon copies and then slide a little piece of carbon paper in to re-type the correction.

I think it started going downhill when the  MTSO's started showing up more and more.  Only because, they cut the wages because after all, you got to stay at home, didn't have to pay for work clothes, transportation, meals, etc.  And you could write off part of your house mortgate, utilities, etc. as long as you had a room that used only as an office.  Everyone bought into it saying they wanted to work at home and thus they bought into the little less in wages that they offered.  I still think there is a distinct advantage to knowing the doc's you are transcribing for.  Working in a clinic or a hospital and getting to know the doc's make it alot easier to look at them and tell them they sound like they are gargling with peanut butter, they acutally laugh, and listen and I found they would make a bigger effort to be a better dictator because of it.  Better dictators = easier to type = faster TAT = less errors = less need for as much editing.  We used to transcribe all day and our work never went to QA (what was QA) QA was the doc complaining about our work which = counseling from your supervisor = getting written up = out the door if you didn't fix the problem.  That was what it was like when I first started 30 years ago.  I didn't have google, I had little notes taped all over  my workstation for those words I had never heard before until they came naturally to me, then that piece of paper was replaced by another one.  I had what I called my "bible" of phrases, etc. certain doctor's always said, no short cuts or expanders, we typed it all out.  That was real transcription.

I put one of those pads they use for dogs size large (M)

under the cat box.  If he misses the pad absorbs the urine, it does not go through the plastic on the other side, and then I just throw away and replace with a new one.

the service that works on our hospital account definitely pads
Many of us inhouse have tried to point it out to the supervisors, i.e. tons of spaces after a header, three or four spaces after a period, using spaces instead of tab button, for god sakes, spelling out milligrams and computerized axial tomography and every single abbreviated term that you can imagine and stuff like that. they even make their blanks verrrrryyyyy long!

Thank goodness the contract with them is going to be coming to an end by March. It just burns us that we get monitored for it, and the outside service does not. They also do not get penalized for mistakes either.
Hillbilly site even tells you how to make your own sanitary pads! (sm)
Okay, after posting before how impressed I was with the websites, I went back and started reading again....so much info!  They even tell you how to make your own sanitary pads!  I don't think I'll be doing this, but I have to say I am loving the cheap, easy recipes.  There are so many that sound really good!  Okay, I'm going back to read more now, but the sanitary pad section just threw me for a loop and I had to come back and share!  Really is very good information though, all kidding aside.
I keep alcohol pads at my desk to clean the sponges on the earphones.
That takes away the itching and keeps the bacteria away!!

I just love it when our cat plops down on my note pads with my work notes....have to pull it all out

It's basically a phone w/o the handle. Has number pads. A headset plugs into it sm
so you can listen to the dictation via a phone line. So, if you use one you will need 2 seperate phone lines unless you want your phone to be tied up all day.

Docs love it because they can just pick up the phone and talk their dictation right into the phone.

You would access those files by dialing a 1-800 number and then putting in your codes, etc., and then the voice file will be there; kind of like dialing into a voice message box to retrieve your messages except you are retrieving dictation instead. Very simple to use. GREAT quality. Excellent quality.

I am 99% sure I am taking a job I was just offered yesterday that requires the use of one. Right now I am on Doc-Q-U-Suck and can't wait to change.
How does one get in touch with you?nm

MD in Touch
Anyone familiar with this platform who would care to share pros and cons of it.  Are you able to produce a good line count, is it easy to learn, can you use PC ShortHand Expander with it?  Thanks for your input.
It's the only thing I will touch. :) nm

If other have "dull" touch, do you mean this has a ...sm
soft, easy touch?  Old lexmark keyboards were extremely soft to the touch which I loved.  Just can't find that anymore.  Is that how this one is?
touch screens
Yes, they do exist. I bought an HP Touchsmart (computer/touch screen monitor in one) for the same reason you are interested in touch screens, and my pain then moved from my wrist/hand to my shoulder, so I don't really recommend this myself.

What has helped me is the input device I purchased at about the same time. It is called an AlphaGrip (link below), and what drew me to it is the fact that the mouse is right at the tip of your thumbs while you're typing. It took a little getting used to, but has been well worth it and fairly easy to transition. I now transcribe from my easychair, reclined the entire time.

Check it out!

No, you are not being cheap.
I spend what I can afford. No more, no less.
They got her cheap
Quality is on the downswing and hiring cheap people is up but that's ridiculous.
Yes, cheap. NM
no message
that is cheap
I have done seminars and meetings and still charge by the line and have made about $100 per 60 minute tape.
Its because they are too cheap

to upgrade to the latest technology.  I remember using DOS forever and WP 5.1 forever because the MTSOs were too cheap to invest any money in state of the art technology.

There are services that use Vista, but harder to find.

Proof of how out of touch they are with the average MT

If ever there was proof of how out of touch AAMT is with the everyday life of the average MT, the annual meeting in Honolulu is it.  First of all, the economy is pretty much in the toilet and airfare has gone up, as has everything else.  Well, every has gone up except our wages.  My employer, a hospital, has very little money in the budget to share with everyone in medical records for educational activities.  The hospital sure wouldn't pay the $3000 bucks, or whatever the total cost is, to send any of us to Honolulu.  If I were to pay out of pocket to go, why go to the tropics in September and spend the time in windowless hotel ballrooms, attending educational sessions?

How much farther out of the way for the average MT could the meeting be?  Bangalore or Bombay?

If keyboard is old, a new one might not be as stiff to touch. nm

There are keyboards that have a touch pad incorporated
in them.  I think I've seen them with a tracker ball too.
Yes-- I have an Adesso with a built-in touch pad
It works very well for me-- you don't have to move your hand that far to use it. It is strange at first, but once you get used to it, you will love it.
My feet don't touch the ground so I
When I sit in my chair, my feet don't even touch the ground, because I need my chair height to be such that I am not looking up at the screen.

I have big platform sandals that I use. They are great. One on each foot. You can move your feet around, but they are nice and high from the ground, like a movable foot stool.

GOODCO could you tell me how to get in touch with GTN and keystrokes. sm
I also am looking for a good company to go with for IC status. Thank you I would really appreciate it. Have a good day.
Not ONE of my 3 kids would touch that stuff.

Gold touch keyboards
I have had mine for about a year now and I will never use any other kind.  The touch on these keyboards are wonderful!  You can't go wrong with a Gold touch.
Yes, good luck getting in touch with
anyone at MQ. I never got my W2 from them. The IRS sent them a notice to respond in 10 days and a possible fine but still nothing.
My Yorkie would not touch Iams
I bought my 5.5 lb yorkie Iams and he would not eat it. At one year old he got hemorhagic gastritis a few weeks ago and almost died so now he eats Purina vet formula for GI problems.
oh you guys are so far out of touch with nature...

you think the whole world is Disneyized. You think the male buck stands over the baby deer and protects it, on his wife's behalf. You think Simba's daddy looks for him when lost. Nature is nasty and completely insensitive to feelings. The law is survival of the fittest. Even daddy seals come in and slaughter babies when they find out a rival fathered them. But go on...dream on your pretty little dreams. I notice the only babies ever really championed for are the cute fuzzy ones...go cuddle a rattlesnake, why doncha!

oh and ps I was not original poster who put this controversy on the board, now was I?

I'm 48. I use to blog, to stay in touch with
others with similar interests, to share pictures, to keep an eye on what my older teens and their friends are doing (yes, they know and comment me all the time). Try it. You might just discover that you might gain an appreciation for something new.
The Best, Soft, Air-touch Keyboard Around
http://www.opamerica.com/product_info.php/products_id/782
is there a super-light touch
keyboard that is also split and (hope upon hope) with a rise in the middle like the MS ones?
than trying to use laptop keyboard and touch pad.

Kinesis has a good touch.

How to get in touch with social security?
Went by the office this morning, unbelievable, just wanted to set up an appt but too many waiting. I tried to find the web site but had no luck therel. I have heard you can set up an appt that way, just need to know where to look. TIA.
light touch keyboard
I have a logitech DiNovo.l  It is pretty expensive but it is small, flat and makes hardly any noise.  The only draw back is that it comes with a separate number key pad.  The key pad is not connected to the keyboard.  I love this keyboard with my laptap. It is the same size as my laptop and fits flat in my laptop case so I can take it with me anywhere.
And, speaking of the personal touch,
since I was a legal secretary, I type his business and personal letters and get paid the same line count. There is a chair in the doctor's office where we make the exchange everyday - I pick up the tapes and patient list from that chair and he picks up the transcribed reports from that same chair. We have been doing it this way since the beginning and it works very well. We are just comfortable with each other. And, yes, I count my blessings everyday.
I'm with you, Peg. I hated EMDAT. I will never touch
Demographics weren't filled in and had to look up every doctor name/address, and sorry, but the spellcheck was horrid. Even with the "setup" the company gave me that was supposed to correct it, it was the worst I've ever seen. Please, Rosey, do not make such broad statements and expect everyone to love something merely because you do. A lot depends on how the company maintains their platform. Have you ever worked on any other platforms? EMDAT is one of the most cumbersome programs out there so I doubt you've had much experience with more sophisticated platforms.
We don't touch bodily fluids

Hair dressers go for further education to keep up with the trends.  The trends for us are in the dictation.  It's do or die.  We don't have to wait and see what's new, it's right there every day in each dictation, i.e., new meds, new studies, new information.

If we require credentialing, then every one in the medical field including receptionists and file clerks in the medical records department should require credentialing since we all handle confidential medical information.

Cheap docs

They absolutely don't care about quality or any of that jazz, which is why I have always wondered why we as an industry keep beating each other up over issues that doctors couldn't care less about. Not that I think we should all just transcribe any old way we want, but it seems like we act like the slaves out in the mud pit slapping each other around about how much or how little straw to use for the bricks while the slavedriver sits on the side line with the whip completely content with end product either way.

I suppose the answer most would give is that we should take pride in the quality of our work whether they (the doctors) do or not, but I can't get passed the notion that these are the same individuals that the powers that be seem so intent on pleasing and are also the same individuals who would see us all in the soup lines tomorrow looking for the next homeless shelter to sleep in if they had their way. They (the medical profession) will not think twice about putting all transcriptionists out of business at their first opportunity, and yet we as an industry continue to bow to their ridiculous and uninformed demands concerning how to do what we do or their complaints about how much we charge or that we shouldn't charge for line count generated by short forms or macros, etc. They have no clue how many times their butts get saved by transcriptionists on a daily basis.

I've never met a transcriptionist who wouldn't readily agree with the notion that we are part of the health care team, and yet many of us continue to act like we still work for the doctors instead of the patient. Oh well, go figure.

Just venting as well.

Cheap doctors
I remember one specialist many years back who complained when the hospital I worked for put in a new dictation system which required pushing the buttons on the phone to put in patient ID, etc.  He came to the department in person, ranting and raving because "now he would have to pay to have a push button phone installed" in his office.  This same doc came in the department on a Sunday afternoon and was using the hospital department copy machine to copy EACH AND EVERY PAGE his JAMA because he had DROPPED IT IN HIS POOL at home.  Can you say, "cheep, cheep, cheep"????
No, its cheap labor.
x
That's cheap.....electrolysis......sm

the plastic surgeon charges $400 per session no matter what part of the body, mine was the chin and one brown spot, oh and in between the eyebrows (which the dr who didn't own the practice charged me HALF that).  That doctor is more experienced in laser than the doctor who owns the practice (who wouldn't have charged me at all *lol*).

Someday when I am rich (hey, I can dream, now can't I???  *LOL*) I will go back and have the chin done over and over again *lol*

The reason they are so cheap
I think it's a bit of hyprocrisy on MLSs who are so anti-offshoring but love their computers from a company that offshores a lot of its jobs and there are plans to do even more.
Onesuite.com cheap, not
unlimited but very cheap, under 3 cents a minute.  Lots bells and whistles.  It's for regular phone not internet.
Cheap tickets.com
I got two round trip tickets for less than 500 on cheap tickets.com
Talk is cheap and I don't believe it
I have a feeling you make a lot of sloppy errors and that's why you are hostile to QA who is in the same boat as you struggling to make pennies for each line. Grow up and go to charm school.
Maybe it's a new, CHEAP way to lower their
