You honestly think an MT has an education equivalent to a RESIDENT?!?

NO WAY have I ever spent as much time downloading digital files as I have running work to the offices in town. Unless you live within a block of the offices, that's not going to be the case for most people.

My opinion is not meant to offend you, Patti, but that is my experience and I've done both digital AND analog. Also, I do not pay extra for FTP - I use the space provided through my ISP, which I pay for regardless to have Internet. It requires very little maintenance on my part and I've never had a problem with it. I have a call-in system and I've also never had a problem that required me going to the office. Although having to go to the offices once in a while is a LOT different than doing it on a DAILY basis, and that is not at all what I was talking about. It's programmed and fixed on my end, not in the docs' offices.

My gripe is having to deliver/pickup work daily and spend an hour running to offices, an hour in which I am not making any money but spending it on gas. With gas at $3 a gallon (or more), it is not cheap, as I have a good little trip to the offices of my clients. I've never had a situation where the uploading or downloading of files took more than 5-10 mins, tops, and I'm able to continue working while that is taking place in the background. I can't say the same for dropping off work and picking up tapes where I'm losing an hour of production every day.

Not every IC aspires to have a big service or network to pick up add'l clients, either. Some simply want to remain ICs and pick up a few accounts to bring in money for their own purposes, not so they ever have to hire help. Personally, I wouldn't want to market for another account because I know I couldn't handle the extra work and I'm not interested in ever hiring subcontractors again. Bad experiences with that, too. This is all just MY personal experience, and if it differs from yours, I'm sorry, but not everyone will be just like you, either, and wish to be seen and heard. In my experience, many of the docs couldn't care less who is doing their work so long as it gets done. I get invited to office parties, luncheons, and the like, so it's not like they NEVER see me, either. You completely took everything I said the wrong way. This was all just meant to show another side, a side which many others might also appreciate. If you choose to cater to clients and seek more, that's fine. That's just not my preference or style. I'm a worker bee and I don't need or want all the frills.

Believe it or not, some of us are not lonely at home and actually prefer that. I worked in-house for YEARS and I have no desire to do that again. As I said, my preference and my experience so YMMV, but I feel people have the right to hear that side of things, too.

    Resident....
I have worked in/around hospitals for over 40 years and your situation is different. Most places consider any MS of any year a student - that is why they are called Medical Student. They are in school, have not received a degree. Most go for 4 years. In the 3rd year, they start doing internships to get them ready for Residency, but they are still called MS3 and MS4.

After they get their MD, then most go on to Residencies and then they are called doctor.
I had a resident the other day who kept saying

P-tosis.  He didn't sound much older than my 20 YO DS.

I agree with the cadiac docs though.  I think they are some of the worst.

    Student vs Resident
I think you guys are confusing a 4th year medical student with a 4th year resident - only the resident is a doctor.
    Former Myrtle Resident
Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas have to be the most wonderful areas to live ever...unfortunately two years ago I had to leave the area due to my hubby's company transferring us. When you get to go to Myrtle savor every minute of my "home" for me. Its wonderful...take in the fresh salt air and know you are in a little part of heaven.
Okay, so I've got this resident

on the line dictating and I'm actually thinking to myself - wow if he's this bad now, what's he going to be like when he's the doc and has no one telling him how to do it.

He's trying to dictate in that choppy style   (cutting out the words that help to make things understandable).  I'm guessing he thinks it's saving someone money.

He wouldn't be half-bad to understand, if he would just open his mouth a little bit wider when he speaks.  It's like he's purposely trying to see if he can "throw his voice".  Maybe he secretly wants to be a ventriloquist.

Seriously, I think the part of the resident's rotation should be in the transcription department.  If they spent even 1 day doing nothing but transcribing, maybe they'd try to be a little bit clearer when they're dictating.

Okay - done complaining - back to work!

I have a resident this morning
who is literally spelling everything under the sun.  All medications, the word "supple", etc.  He is driving me absolutely mad.
Resident dictates at end of report...

"Note to transcriptionist...thank you for your time, thank you for your service, and have a great day."

WOW, that doesn't happen often, and when it does, it sure feels nice to know we are considered colleagues and not just a typewriter on the other end of the telephone line!

I have a resident who keeps saying, "Acephalic, normotraumatic" and ... sm
...lemme tell ya, after hearing that a couple of dozen times it is SO tempting to just give it to her (perhaps in quotes, but give it just the same), but so far I have resisted temptation.

    PRAY! PRAY! PRAY!

As a resident of Louisiana, I ask that you all pray not only for those poor souls in New Orleans but for the whole state and surrounding areas.  The aftermath effect is going to be widespread. PRAY!   We are already experiencing food supply shortages.  Woman fighting over a loaf of bread in a Wal-Mart. PRAY!  Our kids may not be able to start school because there is no diesel or gas for the buses.  PRAY!  For this I urge all you have enormous SUVs just to ride around in to get rid of them.  The worst is yet to come.  PRAY!  There are reports of the centers having out breaks of riots not only in New Orleans but in the other areas housing the displaced people.  PRAY!  Also, help any way you can.  If you can not afford monetary donations, please give your time at one of the shelters.

All our lives have and/or will change from this tragedy no matter where you live.

Had a resident who practically giggled through his entire dictation....
because his psych patient kept asking him if he wanted to see her underwear (she was in her 70s). I didn't find the woman's comment so funny, but this doc had the weirdest laugh...it was like Ernie from Bert & Ernie on Sesame Street. Weird.
"Listen" to the resident authority editor? That really says a lot about the pompous attitude

    Education
Also, every other civilized country has a better education system than the U.S. We graduate people who cannot read and write. I only hire Canadian MTs by choice anymore, because with a mere high school equivalent education they're leagues ahead of their U.S. counterparts.

When we moved from Canada to the U.S. (I was a child), my siblings felt like they had jumped BACK 5 years in school and quickly became bored and disinterested, while they achieved straight As in Canada.

Education is not a priority here, yet we gripe when jobs go to more educated countries.

Again, I guess it comes down to our vote.

Healtchare and education are not priorities in this country.
You need a little bit of an education.sm
Homosexuals, pedophilia, nymphos, etc, etc. all fall into the category of deviant, aberrant, and perverted behavior. They are not born that way, they choose to be perverts. No 5 year old knows they are a homosexual, they certainly could become psychologically disturbed after some pervert/deviant did something to them at that age or before that.

    SNAKES

Many people share misconceptions about snakes. In reality, the large majority of them are harmless, gentle creatures that provide valuable service in controlling rodent populations around our farms and homes.

The snakes most likely to be seen in our area are garter snakes and gopher snakes, both harmless. King snakes and rattlesnakes are encountered much less frequently. The gopher snake's superficial resemblance to the rattlesnake often creates problems for it, but they can actually be told apart fairly easily. Although the gopher snake will vibrate its tail, it has no rattles, the unique property of the rattler. The gopher snake also has round pupils in its eyes like ours, while the rattler's pupils are elliptical, or pointed like a cat's.

The rattler is the only snake to be avoided in California, and this is not difficult. When hiking or climbing, wear boots and avoid placing hands and feet in places where you cannot see. If you should encounter a rattlesnake or any snake, your best course of action is to back off and allow the snake a way to retreat, which they will generally quickly do. Should someone be bitten by what you believe to be a rattler, attempt to kill the snake if this can be done without delay and take it along to aid in identification. Immediately take the bitten person to the nearest hospital, where healthy people usually recover quickly from such a bite with treatment.

Most snakes are harmless and helpful, and should never be killed unnecessarily, as the benefits they provide are considerable.

It all comes down to education. SM
This is my opinion of course, so slam me if you wish or agree with my beliefs. Our society has gone so "far out there" with regard to morals in regard to the welfare system for example. Our young women in this country, not all, but many (particularly the lower income areas) feel their most important goal in life is to have babies and get money from the government. They have multiple babies from different men and are not even sure who their children's biological fathers are. These kids grow up and continue the vicious cycle. In doing so, the lack of education that many U.S. citizens get is ridiculous. It does not take money to get a solid education, but many women (and men) choose the easy road with the welfare system. No government policies put a stop to this, which I believe is just a crush to the hard working and educated part of the population who are successful citizens in their lives. There may be poverty in foreign countries, but not by the citizens choice. India citizens, for example, are very intelligent and educated and willing to be successful in careers. No, I do not agree with outsourcing our work, and the company I work for does not outsource. My point is that standards and morals in many parts of the U.S. stink, for which I blame the lazy, uneducated people working the system, and the government policies that allow this to happen. (Yes, there are those on Medicaid who truly are disabled and need the support. I am not even referring to those individuals). The middle class should be rewarded for working hard, but instead the lower class just gets more and more given to them via support by the government. If this continues, our jobs will be significantly overtaken by foreign countries.
Where I am, if you have the education and
experience, it pays better than MT. Oddly enough, last I heard, no program could code as well as a person, and because profits are involved instead of harder- to-appreciate quality, those who hire have no choice but to care about quality when it comes to coding. The proof is all in the numbers. Put another way, MTs cost money, coders find money. But where I am, the education is stressed more also, and you have to work on-site for the hospitals here (last I heard).
Do you have any MT education, did you
get a certificate?  You need to start there first if not.  Otherwise you should list your resume on the various free job boards.
You don't know anything about MY education

Question my actions all you want, but let's leave the personal comments out of it, okay?

I could give you a run-down on my "education" but that is not the point here. I asked a question about something I had not dealt with before, and asked how other MTs handle it. I did not ask for personal comments or slurs.

    Education is everything - sm
Point them in the direction of a GOOD school.  I am talking one of the Big 3.  You get what you pay for.  I graduated from M-Tec 8 years ago and have been working from home ever since doing acute care.  When I did QA I saw successful graduates also come out of Andrews.  People from schools outside of the Big 3 were so ill-prepared it was impossible for them to keep a job.  They are the ones who come here begging for someone to give them a chance.  Many, many companies will waive the 2 years' experience requirement because the education received at these schools is that good.  I had recruiters banging my door down to test when I graduated.  Check out the good schools!
    Proper education? LOL
This is not a regulated or licensed industry. There is no "proper education".

MT schools give a beginner level of knowledge and maybe a little touch on doing dictation but there's no "proper education" to be had here.

I've done this 25 years. I've never had "proper education". I was trained on the job. I was an EMT when I started my first MT job.

And please, stop comparing MTs and nurses like attorneys and paralegals. Those ARE regulated industries. Certification is necessary and a degree necessary.

    Continuing Education
Does anyone know where I can get affordable continuing education to keep my CMT? I need 20 hours before this time next year.
By continuing education, do you mean (sm)
the credits you need to renew your CMT credential?  If you are an AAMT member, there are articles in the organization's publications whereby you can earn CEC credits.  M-Tec (on line) has a skillbuilding wizard whereby you can earn credits.  Is there a local AAMT chapter in your area?  This is the easiest way to earn credits, i.e., attending their symposia to earn credits.  E-mail me if you need more info.

    Education assumptions
Many people assume, because they have have four + years of college and can type well, that of course they would be able to do MT. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There is quite a long learning curve and for a long time, the salary earned by an at-home just starting out MT (IF you can get hired) would not be out of place in a third world country.

I do not believe that being an MT will be viable for many more years. The pay is getting worse and there is less work due to speech recognition and electronic patient records. More and more people are chasing this work (because you will be competing for a job in a global workplace) which, of course, causes the pay to go even lower.

Get experience and more education first.
With your statement that you are pretty confident you can do the work, you tell me that you really have no clue what you are getting into.

You'll save yourself much in finances and in emotional grief if you will go through an AAMT-approved MT training program and utilize that in jumpstarting your career.

How does one get started with no exp. but has education?
I took the Medical Transcription / Medical Coding program at Blinn College in Bryan, TX and graduated with a 4.0. I have no exp. and the only places I can find all want people with exp. Where should I go look to find part time work??? I am a very fast typist with a high rate of accuracy, I just need a break into the field. Thanks for any suggestions!
My education is better because I learned on the job.

I paid too much for a crappy program that did even come close to preparing me for real-world medical transcription.

What I am saying is this, take a medical terminology course and keep studying after the course is over, take a human anatomy and physiology course, and take an English or have demonstrated skills in language usage and grammar, and then get out there and get a job.

You will learn more on the job then can ever be taught in ANY classroom!  Quite frankly, you could order a medical terminology text book and A&P text books and study on your own and be just as prepared as you would paying $4000, 2000, 1200 or whatever to a school.

And yes, I have trained and QA'd Andrews and MTEC graduates and they have sucked eggs just as much as the next newbie MT.

I'm looking at a company called Future MT for online education.  Does anyone know anything about them?

You don't owe your children a college education at all.
My personal advice to my own children was/is this: As long as you want to invest your effort and energy, I will help you past high school in getting an education.

If you stay home while you attend and keep good grades, I will provide your transportation, you can live here rent-free, eat here, and we will work together to make sure you have all your college expenses paid for and have some pocket money.

If you choose to live out, as long as I see you are keeping your grades, I will give you a limited set amount of financial aid.

However, if you feel I owe it to you or you fail to respect my effort to assist you, then you are on your own.

I also tied their inheritance to their achievements. The more they do for themselves and the higher the education, the greater the percentage of their inheritance. If they felt it wasn't necessary to prepare themselves now, don't count on my estate assisting them later.

It is hard to let them make these mistakes sometimes but the more painful it is for them, the quicker they learn. Doesn't take but touching the hot stove once for a kid to realize I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT AGAIN!!
I received an excellent education through M-TEC

See below thoughts HS education from a 15yo.

The following was written by my son when he started 9th grade at our local high school.  My son is very intelligent and has always made high honors through school, but has never really been challenged.

He asked if he could home school and I told him I needed som good reasons that I would find acceptable.  He typed up the following synopsis  for me:

"You have to get up way too early to go to the school where you only sit around for a half hour and then finally go into a classroom for 1st period where your teacher is not prepared and doesn’t start for a good 15 minutes after the bell rings. Then when he finally does start teaching, he doesn’t teach over the material that we learned. He doesn’t keep track of the homework, barely makes us pass it in, and then tries to give us projects about things he hasn’t taught us yet.

2nd period is study hall in the cafeteria with 150 students for 45 minutes where the students just talk and the monitors don’t care and the kids that want to get work done can’t because they can’t concentrate.

3rd period is health. We have all known this stuff since 4th grade and haven’t learned anything new.

4th period is math, the only class where we learn something new every day, but we don’t really learn it, they just expect us to keep what we were told in class in our heads and then we have a test with only a one day review.

    5th Study hall again.

    6th Lunch

    7th Study hall again.

8th Latin. Latin is fun to learn, it’s a good thing. It would help if the teacher knew how to teach the material. He doesn’t even teach, he just says the words in Latin but doesn’t give us any meaning and then wants us to translate it into English.

9th English. English is my favorite subject. I really liked the English teacher I had, but she quit the first week of school. We have had 7 substitute teachers in a 6 week period and haven’t done anything in class, but just sit around while the substitute tries to gather herself.

10th World Geography. Only good thing that I have actually come across about the high school. The teacher knows how to teach. Best I’ve ever met, very attentive, very energetic and he gets the whole class into discussions.

Overall summary of the high school is that the education isn’t the greatest. The kids are horrible. They like to pick at people. There are all kinds of new kids from the towns that don’t have their own high school. Everyone is always grouchy. It’s not a really friendly environment at all.

The sophomores, juniors and seniors don’t set a good example. There are only about 10 kids out of sophomores, juniors and seniors that actually are respectable and the rest just talk about partying.

They have bad harassment at the school threatening sexual and physical harassment as well as threatening to harm families.

It’s difficult for me to learn in this environment.

it is somewhat delusional..he has to want to go in, they pay into the free education the first sm
year they are in..He has to serve his country either while working on getting his education or holding off on his education until he is out.  In the Corps, they have classes they need to take to advance their ranks after LCpl.  Unless it is his idea to go in, this will never work.  He definitely needs to be physically fit.  As for the police department..unless he has military background, he needs a 4 year degree then transfer to the academy.  Good luck to both of you..its hard when they are trying to find their way.  Our town has a jr college that has a co-op with the college most police officers get their degree from..2 years there, transfer to the other college for the last 2 and then automatic admission to the academy.
    College education and outsourcing
Radiologists' jobs are moving to India as well. Engineers also. Any type of medical degree that does not involve direct patient care can and is being exported.
you need an education cuz you're lacking

While I am quite educated, this below came from a T-shirt someone bought for me years  ago because they said the T-shirt reminded them of how I have tried living life and succeeded and taught others the same.  (Think about it, have you not met some over-educated people in the life who haven't one lick of common sense?)  ENJOY THE READ!!

A good education is an essential part to success.  However, one must have a certain respect and admiration for those who have made their marks without the benefit of the traditional university education.  The culture that we call street has given birth to some of the most successful and insightful people in the world.  Many of us would not be here today were it not for the skills and knowledge we acquired and the dues we paid on the streets.  There is no replacement for the street sense and instinct.  There is no school tougher than the School Of Hard Knocks.

    Kids education question....sm

Do you think that schools are getting away from teaching curriciulum in general and focusing more on teaching things that are on standardized testing?

My elementary school age child is already getting stressed because the teachers constantly remind them of the CRCT testing that will be given in the spring and if they don't pass, they can't move on to the next grade.  Each week we get memos about what type of things are on the test and that is what the kids are working on.  Good grief - it's only September and we're worried about tests in the spring and not teaching anything else?

     What about your state/area?

    An Individual Education Plan
For my child, his pediatrician had us go to Babies Can't Wait (in Georgia), but because he was 3 at the time, they referred us to Gwinnett County Public School System, who performed an evaluation, diagnosed autism, and we now have at least annual IEP meetings to layout the plan for next year (can have a meeting at any time if goals need to be changed, etc.). This is an educational evaluation, not a medical evaluation. They then, of course, recommend a medical evaluation.
Absolutely not. You need an education first. This is REAL JOB. nm
