You may have to change the port setting for the footpedal.

Under Settings, Control tab. Try different ones to see if you can find one that will work with your pedal.

To determine what kind of port the footpedal
has, look at it. If the wire at the end is flat, then it is a USB. If it is round and has 9 little holes, then it is a serial port.

The newest computers have in the back a USB- and a serial-port. If you have only the USB port and the footpedal has a serial, then you have to buy an adapter and vice versa.
In addition you have then to access your footpedal setting in the computer and set them right:

Click control panel/footswitch setting and choose the right port, USB or serial.
Aha. So it is a setting they could change.
I think they just haven't noticed or haven't had time to do it, but it's good to know it is possible to have it not spellcheck demographics. There is no reason for it since they wouldn't want us to change anything in the demographics.

Thanks.
You can change the setting in Autocorrect...

for automatic numbering to the left margin by:

1) Open MS Word
2) Select Tools
3) Select Autocorrect
4) Click on the tab 'Autoformat as you type"
5) Make sure the box 'Automatic numberer lists' is checked (it's about the 8th box down)
6) Click on okay (otherwise your change wont take)

I hope this is what you meant.

Is there a way to change the default setting in Word - sm

for line numbering?  It keeps indenting 1-2-3,etc. to the first tab and I need the numbers along the left margin.  I went to <format>, <bullets and numbering>, <customize>, and changed the number position and alignment, and it lines everything up on the left margin.

However, if I have another numbered section in the report, it goes back to the default setting, indenting to the first tab.

Is there a way to change the default, or do I have to go through these steps for each numbered list?

Thanks!

Even 4.5 is too low. doctors do not change - they still hem and haw, change, change stuff along wit
It is just not enough for the work. Speech is great on the wrists but you are not just reading what is typed, you are making a lot of changes. I have a hard time doubling a lot of days with all the changes I have to make. Just my opinion.
Don't change. I had to change back to cable. SuddenLink DSL stinks! nm

Change provider vs change to business plan

In your place, I would seriously consider changing providers if there were others available in your area, but I'd ask around about their service quality first.  It may not be any better.  If there are no other providers, then consider changing your service package to a business account rather than residential.  They're usually more expensive, but they also tend to get faster service if there's a problem.

Last summer, I had no electricity for 3 days due to severe storms, but there were some 600,000 in the same boat with me.  We just had to wait it out.  It's a downside of working at home.

You are right. I never thought about only 1 port. sm
My tower has 2 in the front and 4 in the back. Could the USB ports maybe be under a cover of some sort. Kind of like the little rubber things on a digital camera where you plug in your USB cable?
I have relatives in Port St. Lucie and....sm

they used to live in Miami, but lost everything to Hurricaine Andrew.   Now that they're in Port St. Lucie they have learned from the "Andrew" mistakes and for Wilma made sure they had plenty of food, water and gas for the generator that they bought.  They knew they should have gone to a shelter but during Andrew the official shelter they were in had its roof blown off and they sat there wet and cold for hours until the storm blew over and decided to not do that route again.  They knew with Wilma that they risked having their home destroyed while in it but made that choice.

They did sustain damage to the house with Wilma but aren't waiting and insisting that the government bail them out.  They had already talked to a contractor before the storm and had him lined up and ready to come out after the storm was over so they didn't have to wait on long waiting lists.  These aren't rich people - my aunt is a retired school teacher and my uncle has been disabled for many years.   They're just smart enough to realize that if you live in an area that is prone to severe storms that you have to be prepared or not whine and expect the government to bail you out.

The people in Louisiana knew days ahead of time that they should get out of town and they didn't.  It didn't help that the Mayor there basically blew the situation off until after the fact and  then decided the federal goverment should have done what he should have done in the beginning - made arrangements for people to get the heck away from there if they didn't have travel means. Instead he transported people to shelters that were right in the midst of the storm and then cried to the world that the government purposefully caused people to die.  Gimme a break.  IF anyone is guilty of that it's him because he didn't take the appropriate actions which were even outlined in the  New Orleans  City official disaster plan.

Living in Georgia  and in a "tornado alley" part of the state I know my odds are that my house could get demolished by a twister.  When a severe storm arises I high-tail it to the basement.  Since we also get remnants of hurricaines at times, ice storms, etc. I always have enough food and water to last for several days in the basement, along with plenty of candles and batteries.  I also have lots of  logs for the fire place to cover winter storms.

You don't have to be rich to prepare for a disaster.... just smart about it and plan ahead of time.  If you live in a  coastal state then buy that hurricaine insurance and don't whimper that we need to buy you a new house if you don't have insurance and your home gets destroyed.  I have homeowner's insurance but if my house were to burn down and I didn't have insurance would it be the government's responsibility to build me a new one?  No.

USB port. Is there a way to convert the files?

I just do them as they come in.  I must have 20 different ways to download audio files on my computer, but I don't know how to convert audio files from one program to another

Heck, I have to ask my 11-year-old to get the DVD player to work.

Getting ooooold I guess.  I'm like my parents who used to put a piece of black electrical tape over the flashing clock on the VCR because they didn't know how to reset it until the 7-year-old granddaughter came over and fixed it for them.

Pedals usually last for years. Try it in another USB port if that's what it uses. nm

un- attached chest port?

My son has a chest port.  He can lift up three corners of the port, make a pocket out of loose skin and slid his thumb under the port.  He says the port is supposed to float freely within a tissue pocket created in his chest.  It is his belief the port is Not sutured to anything inside him, like, say, the chest wall for example.  Hmmmm! I am seeking outside opinions as he and I disagree.  Please let me know what you think.

is it a game port adapter?
If it is, you may have to click on "gameport" on Express Scribe
Does anyone use a game port pedal and use
I am considering employment with a company that uses a pedal for the audio that may require a sound card be installed on my PC.  I currently use a USB wav pedal to receive dictation that are dss files, wav, etc.  Does anyone know if I can install the sound card and still use the USB wav pedal or would that take a lot of tinkering back and forth.  I am considering Zylomed, and I think they use MT World.  Would anyone be able to offer any information regarding this type of situation?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
foot pedal COM port
If you have not gotten help with this, why not call your tech support line.

You wrote Start-Stop. Is this the patented HTH Engineering StartStop foot pedal and software? They have a toll-free line.

If it's not and you want to call me, you may.
Did you select the right port under options? sm
In the Bytescribe, look under ports and select USB (assuming that is what you converted to).
I will check out the port. As for the Bytescribe - sm
It did not give me an option, probably because I was re-installing from copying it from another computer. Says I have used up all my installs, so I need to call them and get a code, though the player did still work, just not with the pedal. My other program wouldn't work either. I will check out the port this morning and see, otherwise returning cable and buying a 9-pin card; at least then I know everything will work (otherwise computer being returned...have 3 weeks to do so, don't want to though, it is very nice).
change attitude, change life
The first thing you need to change is that defeatist attitude! I know that's hard at times like this, but that's when you need to most.
I won't go into detail, but my financial situation is also at an all-time low, we couldn't even exchange gifts., daughter in hospital twice, & no med insurance)..but then I heard about how much worse things were for others around me this season. Now I'm thankful instead!
Does anyone know if you have a foot pedal for a USB port if you can convert it somehow to a 9 pin
port or must you buy another foot pedal. Anyone ever had trouble with foot pedal compatability with using their own computer.
WAV pedal/serial port question.
I work for an MTSO  that uses a pedal with a serial plug, and my lap top does not have a serial port, so  have plugged it into a USB adapter. The dictation is coming across has somewhat "hesitant"--there are pauses at times and I really have to bash the pedal to get it going again (the pedal works just fine if I use it on the MTSO's computer, which I don't want to keep doing--I need to be portable with my lap top). The tech people haven't been too motivated to help; I can only use my own computer if I don't require tech support, though I'm told many people do it successfully.

Anyway, bottom line, the adapter is showing up in Com-Port 4, and the tech says it needs to be in 1, though I can't get any further advise. When the adapter is plugged in, the MTSO's software shows a drop down menu for ComPort 3 or 4; there is no 1.  Any suggestions from any of you tech geniuses out there?? Oh, I also have a USB pedal from another service, but that is showing up in ComPort 3 and won't work at all.
Look under Settings, I think. Your pedal might be in the wrong port. nm
s
she said that the usb port worked with her printer, but not any pedals.
not the driver, then. it is not the port that is the problem. :^)
Another thing you might try, is reinstalling the driver for your USB port. SM
If you right click on your "My Computer" icon, click "Properties", then click on the "Hardware" tab.  Then click on the "Device Manager" button.  You'll see a list of all your hardware devices.  Find your USB devices and double click.  You'll see the button for reinstalling the driver.  Go from there and follow the steps.
Just stick it in a USB port. Use it just like a floppy disk.

Start/Stop Com Port settings
Have you played with the Com port setting under the Configure button? I have had to try mine in all 8 until I found the right one.
Shop for a "USB to game port adapter".
Staples, Radio Shack or Office Max should have them.  ebay should have them.  If not, Google for a seller.
Get a game port/USB adapter from Radio Shack - This will at
problem. I am sorry you are having trouble. I love my Dell, but use serial port (9-pin) for my work. Have used the game port adapter at a previous job without a problem though.
Maybe you need it listed in a different port or as a different device? Any place to check the
s
I use an adapter, but mine is game port and not serial. I

didn't need any drivers for it to work.    Have you tried rebooting?

Then I am wrong and it is Editscript that works only with a serial port, sorry! nm
nm
I've searched and not all Dell laptops have the parallel port.
So I just wanted to check to see more specifics from those who have. Thanks.
i use a radio shack game port adapter for my 9-pin - 12 bucks

USB footpedal

Where do I purchase a USB footpedal?

TIA

Footpedal
You wouldn't be working for Zylomed would you? I was to start work with them - they sent the foot pedal and it was nothing but problems. We (meaning me and their IT people) could never get the foot pedal with the adapter to work. Needless to say, I never did any work for them.
footpedal
I had to buy a 9-pin pedal and go to RadioShack to buy an adaptor. I haven't had any problems.
MT without footpedal
I am an MT with Cerebral Palsy and it is virtually impossible for me to use a footpedal so I use hot keys on my keyboard to control my dictation. It is wonderful. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Once you get used to what keys control what, it doesn't slow you down at all. It is definitely something I couldn't live without and I enjoy having at my disposal.
No way to do it other than with the footpedal,
but you can adjust the speed of the forward and rewind arrows...click on the "more" button.  I really do not care for this player either.
footpedal
Can anybody tell me if the Olympus footpedal with serial (COM) port works with escription (EditScript) ?  TIA
footpedal
I would think you should ask the company you will be working for which one they would be using.   They may actually provide all that equipment anyway.
so..... how IS that footpedal, anyway?? NM
.
There is a setting
to fix that and I can't remember what it is. But I complained about it and our IT guys told me how to fix it. There is something that you have to "allow" to get it to work.
Yes, you have a footpedal and headphones

are connected to your computer, the foot pedal into the USB port and the headphones into the headphone jack on the computer.  In my case I have a laptop that runs for quite a while on the battery, so I can either run it on the battery or I can plug it into an electrical outlet on the deck.  I have wireless cable internet, so I don't have to be connected to the router or anything.  I also have wireless keyboard and mass, and the little reception unit for that plugs into the USB port, it is about the size of a mouse.

So all I have to do is take my laptop, my keyboard, mouse, foot pedal and earphones on the deck and I'm all set.  All of it is very lightweight and not cumbersome like a C-phone would be to drag out and hook up.

I took tests with footpedal. If using

Windows Media Player, have to keep hitting the play and rewind buttons with the mouse.  Very time consuming but doable.  Good Luck on your test!!

oops, that's WITHOUT footpedal, sorry...

How does the footpedal work???
OK. This may be strange. But, I listen to a lot of audio programming online through iTunes. My son is doing research for school and asked if I could transcribe a news report for him. I can do it the old fashioned slow way, without a foot pedal, but I have a footpedal. I've never before used it for anything other than work, so I just don't question how it's set up. Can I "point" it to work with something like iTunes, as well?
Escription with a USB footpedal?
Can it work or do I have to get a adapter to change it to a serial port?  I am not getting the clearest of answers from the MTSO on this one.
USB footpedal and Incribe
I am getting ready to start on Inscribe and my pedal did not work. What type of pedal will work.
Where to get a DB9 serial footpedal?

I'm needing a serial DB9 foot pedal ASAP but can't afford to spend $70+ on it right now.  I have an ad on the Classifieds board but I don't think I can wait for someone to reply to me.

Anyone have any ideas where to get one reasonably priced and quick?  I already tried ebay and I found one for $54 but that means waiting for the auction to expire, then shipping.

Incompatible footpedal

Try to put the 9 pin into the serial port on the back of the modem instead of the USB port, hopefully you have one.  I had the same problem and it worked for me.  You have also to click on control panel, then footpedals, then serial port to change the setting.

Footpedal : Hotkeys...........
What is your problem with the hot keys? They are very easy if you get used to it, it is actualy easier on your body than the footpedal.
