This job requires so much concentration there is no way to do it with young children around and no one else to care for them. I was at home, but paid plenty for child care... the baby sitter, the in-home child care agency, Grandma (no, she didn't want pay), nursery school, summer camp, and working when he was sleeping. Not until he was about 8 could I do without some form of child care.  Not to have to commute was and is a great convenience to me, but I didn't do this job so I could stay home and not need child care.
