depends on platform used
I was offered more cpl with 2 companies....both had cumbersome platforms, with a lot of nonproductive prep work.
Depends on platform too.

Right now I'm working on this ultra-crappy platform (or maybe it's an operating system, I have no idea) that takes about 30 seconds to load up the area where we do the actual typing, and then it takes another 10-15 seconds to save it, print it up, and move onto the next.  I'm spending just as much time frigging around with the 'system' (or more even!) than it takes me to type up the report!  Now I understand why the older MTs (no offense there either!) miss the Word Perfect so much!

I agree it depends on the co. and the platform
I worked for a guy who actually thought about doing that to his MTs, and I said "ARE YOU CRAZY???" It's not "business," it's insane to punish your employees for working smarter.
depends on platform, et cetera
nm
Depends on the platform. I did not like Dictaphone speech.
nm
It totally depends on the VR platform your company uses...sm
Some are very good and the reports require little editing, others are awful the reports can be typed almost as fast as editing them, not good when there is such a difference in pay.
may I ask what platform you're on that....nm

Lucy, we use the EditScript MT platform, which is what you're referring to, I believe...sm
All in all I think it's pretty user friendly. It has the audio player built into it and it also handles all the downloading and uploading of the voice files and completed reports. It also has a search function that allows you to search old reports, which is really nice. The downside is that it only works with Word 2000 or 2003, not 2002, and it's a little sensitive to interference on your Internet connection. Also, although they say it will work with dial-up Internet, we have never been able to use it successfully with dial-up.

Depends on how you're using it--sm
In a sentence such as "His next appointment will be in mid March," no hyphen is necessary. If you use it as a compound adjective before a noun, such as "His CBC will be checked at his mid-March appointment," you would hyphenate it.
Depends on what you're looking for....I like
www.medilexicon.com for abbreviations and www.rxlist.com for medications. Otherwise I use google.
it all depends what you're looking for
Do you want the truth -- good, bad or ugly -- or do you simply want the "happy face" version of things?

Personally, if I ask about a company and people know of negative things about it, I'd much rather they be honest than give me a positive spin that has no basis in truth. I also appreciate honesty in other issues and if somebody thinks I'm wrong about something, I don't have a problem with them saying so because maybe they're right!

Facts are facts. The MT world isn't a happy place right now and all the pretending in the world isn't going to change that. And since we're all humans, we're all prone to making mistakes and being wrong about things from time to time.

I love this place because I know that the truth gets spoken here - even if it's not something I want to hear. If that ever changed, then I wouldn't be back.
depends how often you're correcting
If it is only a word once in a while that your are back spacing and correcting, that's one thing, but if you are constantly going back and correcting as you go you are losing a lot of productivity.  I try to put words I constantly misspell or mistype (like "adn" for and) in my Expander so there's not much correction.
It depends on what you're willing to accept.
I don't have as much experience as you (only 5 years), and I was just raised to 14 cents per gross line from 12 cents. I would think someone with your skills and experience should be able to command a better line rate than 8 cents. Good luck to you. Even with my relatively low experience, I wouldn't get out of bed for 8 cents a line.
It all depends on where you're located.
.
Depends on where you work and how you're paid
kj
It depends on what kind of work you're doing..sm...

If you're doing clinic work, you would need the book that pertains to your clinic.  I'd also recommend a Stedman's Abbreviations, acronyms & symbols.  I'd also recommend Sander's Pharmaceutical Book.  Other than that, I'd use Google and trustworthy websites.

It depends on what kind of voice files you're playing.

The sound on Express Scribe is terrible.  I think it's worth it to find a player that plays your voice files with good sound.  If you use wav files, a Bytescribe wav player would be excellent (get the dongle version so you get unlimited installs).  They also have a version that converts DSS to wav.  I complained about the DSS files not sounding clean on speed up and slow down so they told me about another version they have.  If you have a Bytescrive wav player, it's already on your computer.  Of if you're using DSS files you could also use a DSS player.  (I've never tried them).

You're expected quota depends on whether you are paid hourly or per line. SM

I'm paid hourly and I was told the requirement was 50 or more reports per day.  I've never worked QA per line, but I'm sure their line quota is pretty high, at least 2000 or better per day, as you get credit for every line in every report you QA.

Hope this was the answer you were looking for.

MTSO with platform versus no platform (big message)

If a MTSO advertises that the MT works in MS Word and sends dictation by FTP, does this usually mean there will be no demographic/doctor database and the demographics will not be autopopulated?

I got into a mess with a small company (got out real quickly too).  I was required to print out daily email copies of the doctors' office patient schedules (which were barely legible) and type in all information.  I spent more time hunting for the correct patient through pages and pages of these schedules.  Then I had about 25 pages worth of doctor's names that I would have to go through to find the attending, referring, etc.  A total waste of time as I didn’t get paid for that.

I wish MTSO would give more information as to what platform they use (if any).  Proprietary software is such a generic, totally useless description.  Would they buy a new car that listed, "Car has gasoline operated motor?"

And for Pete's sakes, why so secretive about the pay?  Give a ballpark figure.  Just say, pay is between 7-12 cpl depending on skill, testing, etc. Tell me if you pay for spaces, headers, etc.  It would save them time because I wouldn’t even apply for a 7 cpl job.

Before I spend an hour or two testing, I need more information from a company to be sure it is compatible for my needs.  If the MTSO would spend a little time on their website detailing their platform, how they send/receive files, pay rates,  how line rate is determined (spaces/no spaces) employee/IC/SE status, minimal line count, whether work pools consist of 100s of doctors, or smaller pools with 25-50 doctors etc.   Having all this information on their website would save them time and the MTs time.   Phoenix Medcom has a really good layout describing pretty much everything an MT would want to know before testing with them.  I am just tired of testing with a company and then finding out the job wasn’t exactly suited to my needs.

Platform versus non-platform (templates)?

I've been working for MTSOs for years now, using their templates which sometimes cause productivity problems (macro issues, etc). I'm wondering if productivity is increased when working on a structured platform, such as one that a national company provides for its transcriptionists?  I've never used a platform, but it would seem that all one needs to do is straight type onto the screen and the platform program takes care of margins, page breaks, etc?

Any thoughts (as well as companies who are hiring who use platforms) would be appreciated.  Thanks

For Pete's sake, you're not terminating a pregnancy, you're just typing a report after the
It's already been done before you even hear about it, and NOTHING changes regardless of whether you or someone else types it. Sheesh.
It's not funny when you're on a board where language is one skill you're selling.

Hope you're gonna have a glass of wine while you're relaxing

in your spa goodies. Congrats!

Well, you're all complaining that accounts are current and work is low, so, gee, maybe they're
focusing on WORK, as in CLIENT and transcribing, as maybe half of you should be focusing on!!
If you're experienced, try for 9cpl or higher, and you're lucky to get that! nm

Skip it. No one cares. Either you're good on the test or you're not.

You're probably right. Plus we're losing our percentage of good people by .... (sm)
allowing every loser from every 3rd world country on the planet to just stroll on into our country, some legally, most illegally, and take advantage of the social services all us hard working little gerbils pay for by having money taken out of our pay every month. But I don't think we're all lazy. Just the ones on permanent welfare driving around town in brand-new Cadillac Escalades. Saw one just today on the Bayshore Fwy. Brand-new black Escalade with expensive spinner wheels, with 5 or 6 Mexicans in it. Well, who knows - maybe they stole it and it was on its way to a chop-shop. Smart-and-hungry people aren't always hard-working and honest.

You're forgetting all the stuff you can't buy when you're UNEMPLOYED!
Unemployed people have a hard time buying anything, including cheaply made offshore products. How many will have to end up depending on public assistance? That means more tax dollars being eaten up - besides the taxes NOT being collected from the overseas workers. In the long run, are you really enjoying a lower price?
If you're on the job, ask for samples to do it how they want it. If you're testing, separate o

You're not losing it, you're burned out on your main job.
I feel for you... I am having my own "version" ;-) of these kinds of struggles. Lots of recent changes at the admin level have made my job do a 180, going from a really great one to a really crappy one.

For me, it's a struggle to get through the day with a shred of motivation. I get distracted in the way you discuss as well.

I just try to make my environment as comfortable as possible and make the best of it while I decide what the best way is to deal with the burnout... I figure if I can't change my inner brain workings so that I still like this job, I need to find another one, or this feeling will possibly get worse!

I hope it works out for you. Wish I had some better advice for you, but this really does look like burnout and extreme job dissatisfaction to me. We all wear it differently. Try to be good to yourself while you figure out a solution.

Don't know what you're complaint you're making with this post. sm

You stated in your original post that you don't want to work weekends or odd shifts. What is your definition of an odd shift?  Second shift?  Third shift?  Sounds like you want to work M-F on days.  Sounds kind of rigid to me.

Personally I like second shift, so everyone working days means more work for me!

If they're withholding taxes, you're not an IC.
As an IC, you should already be paying taxes. That said, the only benefit having them withhold FICA is that your Social Security/Medicare share will be less. Social Security is 15%; if you're an employee, you pay 7.5% and your employer pays 7.5%. As an IC, you pay 15%. Doing the math, 0.0925 would be your 0.10 minus 7.5%--the 0.0924 is just a tad less than you're making now.
We're out here (good MTs) but we're busy! sm
I don't recall ever taking an employment test where I wasn't offered a job. My MTSO does not even look at my work unless I happen to have a question or a blank, which happens maybe once in every 30 or so reports with an ESL. If you find a really good MT, how much training would be involved? Certainly you would save time in the long run once they're trained and you don't have to check all their work.
If you're one of the MTDesk clan then you're ok
wersdffa
You're right if you're single it's tough.

I am an IC as well, but I have a husband with benefits and makes a fair buck.  I am fortunate after 20 years to able to work from home.  I worked on site for 17 years with a "chocolate cake" the day I left.  Nothing more...  The loyalty in any profession is gone, gone, and gone again.

Most companies want new employees/ICs that will take low pay and that won't cost much in the way of paying vacation time.

I do take every Friday off and try only to get on to check e-mail, etc.

However, I wouldn't trade being here for my kids at this point.

There are headaches no matter what profession you are in.  It seems if it isn't one thing it's another.

Raises?  Out of the question in this profession since most are afraid they will lose the account including myself.  I also underbid my last account because I wanted the account so bad.  I should be charging more.

It is a neverending cycle really.

But, I still enjoy the work, so I guess that's the difference.  It does take will power to sit and type.  Some people need that boss hanging around to keep the production up and the incentive of a nice paycheck is just not good enough.

Good luck with your new job!  Sounds great!

If you're new, good - if you're not a newbie, not so hot
Would need to know how long you have been an MT. For a newbie, this is a pretty good rate of speed.

However, if you have anything over a couple years of experience, then this is not too hot.

Also, what are the dictators like? Is it a "United Nations" account??

If you ARE capable of 200 lph or more and you can't seem to get it, then the problem has got to be with the platform you are using. In my experience, the platform into which you transcribe can make or break your paycheck - so if the platform stinks, then I hate to tell you, but there is no way you will be able to improve your line rate. I have quit jobs because of awful platforms more than once.
platform?
on my platform you can do a control/+ (the one near the backspace) to enlarge the text...
What platform do you use?

I am bored, and trying to get aquanited to the boards, so I am posting a little spree here.

What platform do you use?  I use Extext by Dictaphone.  Like it so far.

How can they tell? Which platform?
Besides, it's not canned text.  LOL  That's a feature in Meditech.  If you use an expander, it's an "expansion".  Those are two different things there.  Isn't it open to interpretation?  If I were in your shoes, I'd download the trial version of ShortHand just to see if it worked and to see if they could detect it.  It's asinine to not be able to use expanders.  Why wouldn't the company want the work done faster and potentially more accurately?  I know there are some really long words that I have to stop to remember how to spell, so those are in my expander.
WOW!! Do you really think that? Platform is what
is used to type. You must be new to the biz. Also you cannot work for Amphion. You would know if you did.
Different platform
I'm w/ Baltimore office, still working on INET. Hearing that won't be for long, not many accounts left on it.
EP-1 Platform
Can anyone tell me about the EP-1 platform for spheris?
what platform is it that they use?
was it easy to learn?
New platform?
Perhaps the platforms should offer grammar checks as well then.......hmmmmm. UH OH, perhaps we just opened up a can of worms!
