melting...

In Reply to: English is not the national language sm - melting pot

I'll tell you why it was okay for my ancestors to come here and not these new immigrants.  When my ancestors came here, they worked HARD. They fought in wars, including the Civil War, spilled their blood and risked their lives for this country so that their progeny could enjoy a better life.

The new immigrants coming to this country demand that everything be done THEIR way.  They come here not to become AMERICANS, but to be Cambodians, Vietnamese, Mexicans, Indian, Pakistani, etc.,  living in America.  That is a big difference.  They use our Affirmation Action policy, which was supposed to help our own minorities like Native Americans and African-Americans, attain a level playing field, to guarantee themselves jobs and places in our universities.  Those universities were paid for by U.S. taxpayers, who for the most part cannot afford to send their own children to those universities without going into debt for 10-20 years.  However, somehow almost every campus in this country magically finds free money for any foreigner who gets him or herself admitted.

We learn English in this country precisely because we are from a smorgasboard of cultures.  Speaking English has always been the thing that unites us as Amricans.  New immiigrants who come here and demand that everything be presented in their own language are overburdening our school system, our health care system, and every human service delivery agency that we have.

As far as you being a Native American - if you truly are one - so what?  You lost the wars, and you need to get over it.  That's always been the way it works throughout human history - to the victor belong the spoils.

The issue of "official language" goes all the way back to the Annapolis Convention, when the merchants who convened to set up uniform taxes and tariffs, discussed making German or English the official language for business/trade.
