suggest finding out if your state is a community

Posted By: property state #1....if so it's all 50-50...sm on 2006-07-24

When I divorced the ex, we had just bought a house.  We live in a community property state - everything you accrued during the married is pretty much split 50-50.  I hired an attorney for $600 !!!  He hired a real-property attorney for $350 as he was worried about the house.  I gave him the house and the dog and I took the child.  It is a joint custody state but I was the primary custodian.

It's worth it to hire a divorce lawyer, and like you said you're only married 2-1/2 years (I was married 12 yrs) and you probably have little to no equity in the house at this point (just like us back then).

Check out cheaper divorce lawyers and see what you can do.  Best of luck!

Any tips for finding a good alphabetized list of physicians in a certain state? Not finding very

Work for a company in a state that has no state income tax
I think there are 3 or 4 out there (Florida, Texas, and a few others.)  Then you really avoid the tax situation.
You have to go outside the community....

I also went to a community college
and never had any problems finding a job. In fact, I got my first job at home before I was even finished with school. I took all my classes online and have worked from home for the past 3 years here with my kids. I say go for it!
Community hospitals
Hi. I just recently got outsourced by my local community hospital which I had worked for for 8 years, the third hospital where I've lost my job to outsourcing.

We were paid hourly from $9-$15 hourly. We had to have a minimum line count of 135 an hour based on a 7-hour day, so 980 63-character lines a day was exceeding standard, worked every 4th weekend and rotated holidays. I loved it. Then they outsourced to Spryance and most of the work in the entire Dayton Ohio area went overseas. There are only a few transcriptionists left working for the hospitals.
Name a state and put every company in that state under suspicion.

Tell what the first letter of the company is and every company with that initial will be suspect.  I would imagine that everyone who works for that company has received an inquiry from department of labor, so they would all be aware of it.

Why do we persist in setting up companies to be torn down when there is no reason for it.  If a company is suspect, then give the name of the company, don't give big hints that cover at least 5 companies, 4 of which may be the best companies to work for, but fall into the category of an alphabetical letter, etc.

Contact your local BBB in your state and in their state if different from yours.

Not mandatory, as you state it depends on your state - sm
or county. Where I am I do not need it; though if I was cutting grass or landscaping I would where I live, makes no sense to me as I am providing a service, but very happy I don't have to have one. We pay personal property tax here and I would have to list all my business related equipment and pay taxes on it every year I was in business. So until I am told otherwise by my county, I will not be getting a business license.
Who is to say that these people are pillars of the community?

Actually, I live in a rural community sm
and left a hospital where that was very good pay.  Starting wages for MT was $8.00 an hour with a 25 cent raise every year if you were lucky.  $11.50 would be like gold for the transcriptionists that work there.
Given by a community college? What school is

Community near me succesfully fought one off, but sm
that was only because there are about three within ten miles of there. If there are none in your town, I wish you luck.

Your local community college...

It will cost a **** of a lot less, and your education will be just as good.  Many will tell you that you only get help in job placement, externship, be ready to work, etc. via Andrews, etc., but that's just not true because they just don't know any better.  Besides, that's a great sales pitch/gimmick, isn't it?

In learning this field, you need a classroom setting and hands' on experience/instruction. You'll see exactly what I mean when you get in the thick of it, or even starting out in learning it, for that matter.

I was fortunate with community college
I took courses through my local community college's continuing education program. The instructors were people who worked in the medical field during the day and taught at night. By doing exceptionally well in the classes and being a model student, I was recommended by a couple of the instructors and got a start at the office where one instructor worked before I even finished my transcription class.

Once I got my foot in that first door, I've been working steadily and successfully ever since. I had only a couple of classes under my belt!

The approved schools are probably the best chance for work after graduation, but opportunities can arise wherever you train.

In our increasingly global community, maybe

I went through Bellevue Community College
Also the CareerStep program online with once a month meetings if we lived close. Got a Sallie Mae grant. Got hired by MQ right out of school (after testing). Careerstep is one of the best schools and one of the only ones you can get hired straight out of school. I would not really recommend transcription anymore, though. It is not the job it used to be, paywise. Coding is still good pay I hear.
I went to a local community college
I started working for a small local MTSO.

I actually borrowed a set from the library at the community college here.
I used them as long as I needed to, then returned them.
Really!!! This is fairly common MT 'net community
can this go on?!!
Check out your local community college -SM
I can't speak for all of them, but the one I went to offered externship programs and job placements for their best and brightest students.  An acquaintenance of mine also got her MT training at a local college, and they did the same thing.  Be careful, however, of the online courses.  They cost a lot of money - much, much more than your local college, and you won't get the hands-on training or be able to get your questions answered in a flash with them as you would in an actual college setting.  Also, an associate's degree at a college is much more impressive than admitting you received your training via an online course.  That, to me, just sounds so "fly by night."
SIL says she went through Wellspan Community Health Center. sm
any idea how to call them? i am not finding that exact name info. i did find roseann freundel as a DO student in WV but just pictured and an article. no contact info.
I vote for local community college.
If you attend a community college, it helps to network.  If you do on-line training, you won't have the social part of your training.  Also, it helps to try and find an on-site position at first to gain the knowledge although since you are already in a clerical position, you probably know more about anatomy and the hospital/medical setting than you even think.  I wish you all the best.  Another good thing about a local community college is that sometimes they know of great jobs because the teachers are also employed or know of jobs.  You will have a certificate of training in an MT program, but a certified MT is done through the AAMT or whatever it is now, and is not worth the money in my opinion.  You wind up after paying a few hundred dollars getting to put CMT after your name, but not when you transcribe a report.  For example, even CMTs cannot put XXX/xxx, CMT if you catch my drift.
I graduated from a local community college. sm
Had my first job before graduation but it was in-house with hourly pay and great benefits. Those are very hard to find anymore. I worked in-house for my first 2 years and then went on maternity leave picking up side work through a company for more income. Realized I was tripling my money going from hourly to production by that time, turned in my notice, and never looked back. Been at home ever since. If at all possible, in the beginning I would recommend to anyone to work inhouse even if it is for a transcription company. The value of having other "ears" is definitely not something to take for granted. I also learned as much as I could while getting that hourly pay as time is money when on production. I have to say I probably would not be near as proficient of an MT today had it not been all those hours learning and having another ear around to help out when stuck.

You bring up a point too though that I haven't really thought about before....With all the transcription being outsourced out of the office, it is only going to get much more difficult for anyone to get those breaks and get the required "experience" as a beginner.
I'm looking but not finding

I want it all, good money, good benefits, job security.  Why is this so hard to find in this business??  Where i'm at now, awful benefits, but i'm at the top of the pay scale and have had the same account going on three years, yet I havent got a raise and it seems my lines are disappearing or its taking me more time to get the money I used to, not to mention sore hands.  So I also want a company who won't cheat me.  I'm so afraid though because I have it fairly well here.  Most companies start out at 7 to 8 cpl which is appalling I think.  One place I  found, MDI, starts at 9 - 10 cpl, but I do not see any benefits whatsoever.  I think if you're an IC, you should be getting 13 to 15 cpl to cover sick days, the incredibly high medical insurance, and also some to stuff away in case of a longterm leave.  All I can say is stick it out where you're at, maybe go to school for something better.

It might just take finding the right fit
I went through 4 different nationals before I found the right company with the working environment I wanted. I have the best of both worlds now, full-time benefits as an employee with the flexibility and control over my workload that I want. Just keep searching. You will find somewhere that fits.
Definitely asking a lot. Probably like finding the
pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
From what I am finding

you can deduct something for property tax for state taxes, and the online program asked about this specifically and calculated (because they figure the landlort has basically included at least partial prop. tax expense in the rent).

However, in the online tax prep question, it asks if rent a "home."  That is why I am not sure about the apartment complex.  What the difference might be.

Sorry for the confusion.  Still need an answer if anyone out there knows.

This lady is well know in the MT community and is a long term MT. I understand

your skepticism, but that is not the case with this gal. She has been straightforward from the very beginning and I have practically her entire background.  I would ask that we leave skepticism out of the picture and try to help this family out.

Thank you,

Sheri

Hi! Went through a similar thing at a smaller community hospital....sm
in the state...all the same set-up as you stated, but the coders, who shared our office, were also the darlings of the hospital and were treated differently. When pressed for an answer, the head of HIM said that between us, the coders were seen differently because they were responsible for bringing lots and lots of money into the hospital, their coding "properly" translated in to billing, which translated into $$$ for the hospital...all the while, the coders, in part, depended on back-up from our department when trying to decide which code was most appropriate. Since your working conditions would be changing if you are sent home, I think it is entirely reasonable and very intelligent to ask them for a new job description, I always love to have things in writing for future reference. You sound like a very productive MT, so don't worry...I didn't have to worry about speech recognition at this hospital cutting down on pay, but is there an HIM head whom you could all have a small meeting with to clarify these questions? It would be nice to put your mind at ease. Hope it all works out and you have the best of BOTH worlds, Granny!
I'm going to a local community college for culinary arts, I'm 52. nm

I had mine but let it go after finding out that

for many reasons, including supporting offshoring, lack of financial management and not truly representing MTs.  Plus, the "standards" they are trying to set are not accepted nor recognized by hardly any facility.

For me the last straw (after putting up with the offshore blind eye - or not so blind) was when they came out with the new testing guidelines that are a slap in the face to anyone not doing acute care.  In the past there wasn't such an "attitude" toward clinic work, but now newbies are forced to do acute care - not in their best interest in most cases.

I could go on, but that is the tip of the iceberg.  AAMT could be a viable organization, but at this point it is not.

Finding Clients
I had gotten my previous clients when I worked in a hospital Medical Records Department as an MT. The docs just came to me and asked me to do their work at home. I am going to have a professional letter and business cards made up now to send to local doctors, just anyone in the phone book who looks good, but mostly cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery and orthopedic docs. They seem to have the most consultation letters.
Does anyone finding themselves needing a nap (sm)
Everyday almost, by 2:00 PM, I am so sleeping that I can't keep my eyes open.  I think it is boredom actually, but a quick 1 hour nap helps tremendously:)  Just wondered if it is just me.
Looking but not finding other companies that pay more
If anybody could point me in the right direction, I'm looking for a full time QA position (not IC) that pays more than 14.75 an hour and actually appreciates their employees - that would be nice.
I'm finding the same, but so many questions...
and finding that it it hard to know which is the best deal, when one pays per char, one no headers, one wants bonus for this and that... is so hard to figure... let us know who you feel the best bet is.  I have talked to many also... and one other thing, sometimes its not the one offering the most up front, but find the work is more interesting with the one offering the less.
They are the same, but I have trouble with finding
things on the electronic one. Also, if you buy thru regular wholesaler, you get the book and the CD for free - $89, I believe. Otherwise, the CD is expensive on its own!
Another reason why MTs are finding
other professions.  The games companies are playing is getting old.  It's getting pitiful.
How do you go about finding your own accounts?
I have been an MT for 10+ years. I have always worked for either a hospital, clinic, or private practice, and have worked from home for the last 5 years, most recently with a service. I would like to try to get my own accounts, but not really sure where to start. Can someone give me some tips/pointers for landing my own local accounts? Im just tired of working for someone else and not making any money and having no benefits.
As an IC...are you finding enough work?

I was an IC for 26 years, then decided to join the digital world and become an employee for benefits sake. I am on my third company in one year and none of them have kept me in full time work (1500 lines/day). I'm so frustrated. I love the bennies but I need full-time work. So, I'm considering going IC again and trying to get as many accounts/companies as I need to get the lines I need.

I am wondering if the ICs around here are still able to find the amount of work they want...specifically via MTSOs rather than local offices/hospitals...anyone who cares to share, I sure would appreciate hearing your experience. TIA.

need help finding MS word

Hey ya'll, just found that I need Microsoft Word either 2002 or 2003 in order to start my new job doing VR.  I cannot seem to find this anywhere, nobody is selling it anymore.  I found one copy on ebay so far - does anyone else know of another website or how I could obtain this?  I was really looking forward to this job, I am in desperate need.  I am not the fastest MT in the world but I think one of the most accurate - was hoping VR might be a good fit for me.

Thanks so much for any help.  Love, Cindy

So where is it that you are finding these MT jobs
that offer more than 6, 7, or 8 cents a line? I sure as heck haven't found them and have been told by past employers that I am a great MT even with only 3 years experience. I have many friends who are also MTs who made a recent change of employment to a service and we are all in that 6, 7, 8 cent range for lack of any other offer and wanting to be home and out of the inhouse atmosphere.
To me, this is the most important finding: - sm
"The average transcription price ranges from 11.9 cents to 13.2 cents per line, depending on whether the services provided are onshore, offshore or a mix of both."

There are some problems with the methodologies used to produce these KLAS studies, but setting those aside what's instructive here is that around 10 years ago a different study showed the average industry price to be 14 to 17 cents per line. Offshoring and cutthroat competition, and to a much lesser degree technology, have resulted in lower prices, and that can only do one thing - put downward pressure on the wages paid to transcriptionists.

Predictably, then, wages in our segment of the healthcare industry have stagnated or declined, while in most other segments prices and wages have risen - in some cases much more rapidly than the rate of inflation.

Your local community college. Just as good and a heckofalot cheaper!

Finding Your Friend Alive

It is very possible your friend is still alive, as they are still finding people alive every day and if he is still in the area, unfortunately there is not much in the way of any phones working in these hard hit areas, so it wouldn't surprise me if he is still alive.  Have you searched all of the Red Cross Shelter lists?  Everyone who is at a shelter has to have their names put on a list and there are new names being added everyday.
