Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

the service that works on our hospital account definitely pads

Posted By: hospitalmt on 2008-01-01
In Reply to: Is it possible to pad line counts? - Curious

Many of us inhouse have tried to point it out to the supervisors, i.e. tons of spaces after a header, three or four spaces after a period, using spaces instead of tab button, for god sakes, spelling out milligrams and computerized axial tomography and every single abbreviated term that you can imagine and stuff like that. they even make their blanks verrrrryyyyy long!

Thank goodness the contract with them is going to be coming to an end by March. It just burns us that we get monitored for it, and the outside service does not. They also do not get penalized for mistakes either.

Hospital at-home job vs. service
Here is the scoop:  I work for a service now, but was offered an at-home position with a local hospital at $14.70 per hour with benes.  WHAT SHOULD I DO???????
Hospital versus Service
The experience you will get at the hospital cannot be beat. Nothing compares to having experienced coworkers to help when you are stuck on something.
Do you work in a hospital or a Transcription Service
Office? It is a hospital there should be a manager that you can go to or an administrator. Production is key in hospital work, and it is important you have the quiet you need to produce.
Last resort is applying at the service the hospital is using.

Angry, this happened in our hospital with our outsource service - sm
we had not been checking the outsource service's work for months. Well, it came back to bite us in the ass, because low and behold there was a Transcriptionist that worked for the outsource service that could not type whatsoever - in fact, we even suspected that it was being offshored without our knowledge - that's how bad it was.

anyways, it came back to bite us in the ass because an outside doctor's office received a copy of a hospital dictation and it made us look stupid. So needless to say, we asked that this certain transcriptionist be taken off the account. It was our fault for not looking at the transcription services work, but then again, they guarantee accuracy and crap like that.

Maybe this is what happened in your situation. That all of a sudden the hospital decided to do a QA or some doctor finally read his dictation.

Don't be hard on yourself. You will get the hang of it.
I work for a hospital that has Cerner Classic Radnet and a service that sm
uses Cerner Millenium Radnet. The two are completely different. The Classic version does EXACTLY what you described with ShortHand but they found a solution at the hospital. I will look at it on Wednesday when I go to work. I'm embarassed to say that I have used it for so long that I don't pay attention anymore and can't remember the name of the program.

Got a girl on my account who works
when she wants and picks the work out that she wants. The company is very aware but obviously do not care. Funny thing is though I still do 5 reports to her 1. If I were an MTSO, I'd dump her in a NY sec. Figure she must be a friend of the owner or along those lines.

My DH is a Service Engineer, installs/services electron microscopes at hospital, Universities, gov&#
he makes a LOT more than me. My monthly pay equals one of his paychecks after taxes, sad. All he has is a 2 year technical degree too. So if we did not have so many expenses we'd be quite comfy (losing a major one in 4 months though, yeah)....in 5 years when the house is paid off we will be every comfy, can't wait to not have to work! I would get back into my jewelry business FT and see if I can finally make that fly! Have a BFA and don't use it, what a waste.

275-310 lph - one account-large teaching hospital
xx
Hmm. My account (huge teaching hospital) has it, and
I still think the healthcare game is in for a huge shakeup in the not-too-distant future. Quality and confidentiality of medical records will be part of the picture when it finally all gets examined under the new government's microscope. And I don't think they're going to like what they see one bit. If the general population finds out how shoddy their records (and affected health care) are, you better believe some U-no-wat is gonna hit the fan.
honey, it works like this: The MTSO(service) charges the doctor X amount per line or report, and
takes part, gives you the rest. Therefore - the MSTO(or service) decides your pay.

If you are paid 8 cpl, surely you do not believe the service charges the doctor 8 cpl - do you?

Wow! VERY well written and said! My husband works for a local hospital and
there is one patient who is an illegal that has been in the hospital there for 2 weeks and has racked up a bill that is now over $200,000.  One of the other nurses on staff there called the police department and explained the situation and they are in the process of deporting the patient back to Mexico and admitted to a Mexican hospital.  We can't cover the cost of every single person in the world.  The US is just so big and sorry, but my family, all American citizens comes first.  Does that make me a cold hearted person?  I don't think so.
i am an inhouse hospital transcriptionist who works at home
I am an in house hospital transcription who works at home. I get 19.00 an hour plus incentive pay which is 7 cents a line after 1,000 lines. and 7.5 cents after 1,500 lines.

Lost account of 28 years to Dictaphone because hospital believes it will eliminate all transcription
Curious if any of you are working for Dictaphone or Infomatics and doing an account out of Miami with mainly ESL dictators?  I was convinced I would not lose the account after a few days with VR. However Dictaphone is not using VR right away and will transcribe reports the regular way until they have a database. I am certain this hospital will never be done by VR. I posted a job on here about a year ago offering 18 cents per line to help with this account and not one person  accepted after hearing the ESL doctors we have. They are that bad.  Anyone else have this happen to them? Losing to Dictaphone  And we have had to do most of the work for over a month since they supposedly took over because their system is not working.
My friend who works for them is having her mail go to her own account. She hates this new mail prog

Depends on what kind of hospital? Large urban hospital or small community hospital? SM

Also, is it a large teaching hospital? If so you have to consider there will be A LOT of different residents dictating, usually a lot of ESLs at teaching hospitals, and the residents rotate out and new ones rotate in every summer. So you can't expect to get the same dictators and build up your macros because the dictators change all the time.

I would say 9 cpl would be a pretty good offer for a small to medium community hospital where you will be doing the same dictators on a daily basis.  But for bigger, urban or teaching hospitals I would want at least 12 to 15 cpl.

Lilly pads. sm
Yep, not surprising that they have several lilly pads because they're growing.  Matter-of-fact, they have an ad posted on MT Stars.  They do have posted EXACTLY what qualifications they're looking for and the available schedules.  Good luck and I hope to see you happily perched  in my lilly pond.
sponge ear pads
Where do you buy these?  I have looked everywhere including Radio Shack and Walmart and can't find them.
Any more lily pads in your pond?

You can buy USB touch pads on E-Bay, usually cheap.
x
I can't testify to the steno pads

But when I started I used tapes and a selectric typewriter with 3 carbon copies.  We used to use a scapel blade to correct the carbon copies and then slide a little piece of carbon paper in to re-type the correction.

I think it started going downhill when the  MTSO's started showing up more and more.  Only because, they cut the wages because after all, you got to stay at home, didn't have to pay for work clothes, transportation, meals, etc.  And you could write off part of your house mortgate, utilities, etc. as long as you had a room that used only as an office.  Everyone bought into it saying they wanted to work at home and thus they bought into the little less in wages that they offered.  I still think there is a distinct advantage to knowing the doc's you are transcribing for.  Working in a clinic or a hospital and getting to know the doc's make it alot easier to look at them and tell them they sound like they are gargling with peanut butter, they acutally laugh, and listen and I found they would make a bigger effort to be a better dictator because of it.  Better dictators = easier to type = faster TAT = less errors = less need for as much editing.  We used to transcribe all day and our work never went to QA (what was QA) QA was the doc complaining about our work which = counseling from your supervisor = getting written up = out the door if you didn't fix the problem.  That was what it was like when I first started 30 years ago.  I didn't have google, I had little notes taped all over  my workstation for those words I had never heard before until they came naturally to me, then that piece of paper was replaced by another one.  I had what I called my "bible" of phrases, etc. certain doctor's always said, no short cuts or expanders, we typed it all out.  That was real transcription.

I put one of those pads they use for dogs size large (M)

under the cat box.  If he misses the pad absorbs the urine, it does not go through the plastic on the other side, and then I just throw away and replace with a new one.

Hillbilly site even tells you how to make your own sanitary pads! (sm)
Okay, after posting before how impressed I was with the websites, I went back and started reading again....so much info!  They even tell you how to make your own sanitary pads!  I don't think I'll be doing this, but I have to say I am loving the cheap, easy recipes.  There are so many that sound really good!  Okay, I'm going back to read more now, but the sanitary pad section just threw me for a loop and I had to come back and share!  Really is very good information though, all kidding aside.
I keep alcohol pads at my desk to clean the sponges on the earphones.
That takes away the itching and keeps the bacteria away!!

I just love it when our cat plops down on my note pads with my work notes....have to pull it all out
x
It's basically a phone w/o the handle. Has number pads. A headset plugs into it sm
so you can listen to the dictation via a phone line. So, if you use one you will need 2 seperate phone lines unless you want your phone to be tied up all day.

Docs love it because they can just pick up the phone and talk their dictation right into the phone.

You would access those files by dialing a 1-800 number and then putting in your codes, etc., and then the voice file will be there; kind of like dialing into a voice message box to retrieve your messages except you are retrieving dictation instead. Very simple to use. GREAT quality. Excellent quality.

I am 99% sure I am taking a job I was just offered yesterday that requires the use of one. Right now I am on Doc-Q-U-Suck and can't wait to change.
We have decided to add this to our current service not have a new service. It will be easier to sm

keep track of and will just be a different department.

It looks like we will work out details over the next 6 months, talking with community college program directors as well as a few of the distance-learning course leaders to work on the recruiting end.

We will train current staff to mentor if they would like to do so and want to work in the office.

We are still working on production requirements, goals to set, pay, benefits and other fine details but we have 6 months to get it all in place with three months to pull it together after that with a tentative start date of 09/01/06.  We need to build the building as well, although that is already at the blueprint stage in a spot next to our current office.

We did not want to cause flames and bashing by listing the company name as there are always so many negative people on this site, but we are national with over 200 transcriptionists, located outside of Chicago (40 miles west) and have the best team of transcriptionists around!

We will have an "official" announcement after the first of the new year.

Thank you for all of your feedback and suggestions!

What is the difference between an acute care account and a multispecialty account??..nm
nm
I've never had a problem switching from account to account.
The problem I had was being switched too soon. If I don't get one account spec solidly in my memory with QA feedback on mistakes before starting another, I get confused. The other problem I had with former jobs was inconsistent QA. One person tells you one thing, another person tells you another.

Lately, I don't have a problem with it. Right now, my binder has 8 account specs (some I've never had to use) and I'm picking up a new weekend job for a while. The terminology and report formats stay basically the same. It's just all those little preferences. LOL
Full Word is in the Works "Suite," not plain Works.
Works saves files in a different format, but you can open them in Word if you have the correct filter installed.
My telephone service is VOIP, but it s through my cable service, along with my cable internet. .
We have had VOIP for about a year now and I love it. I really can't tell a difference in traditional service, except the price. One of the best calls of my life was to Bellsouth to cancel our service!
RIGHT!!! Someone who works 16 hours and someone who works 60 will have a HUGE difference. NM

Hospital. I wish I'd never left my hospital job.
They'll only take me back if I start off working nights and weekends again at the bottom of the totem pole.
If you work for a hospital - how come no one from the hospital
called you?? Were they in the dark, as well?? How sad, that no one in your hospital communicates with the at home staff.
Shorthand works with every program, it works outside the program you use, does not interfere.
nm
It is a service job and they should
help parents with small children and also the elderly. I think a normal healthy person with "more than a bag or 2" should not have them help them out to the car. It causes the cashier to have to bag, therefore delaying the progression of the line.
PS on Cox service
Did anyone ever receive any surprise charges from Cox, as this is what I plan to use to offer online service to others, i.e., long distance, etc.?
Do you have your own service? I ask because
that it is possible, especially since she has some educational background in the medical field. I certainly would not waste money on an MT course in this day and age (at least not if I am gauging the career opportunities available to MTs by what is said on this board).

I am NOT saying that just anyone can sit down and type, and being an MT is as easy as that. We all know that it is not. However, I was able to break into the field almost seven years ago by having a mentor from a local transcription company (I am in GA too, btw). If you are planning to provide her with work and review her work, provide feedback, etc., then there is no reason why she cannot do it, unless she is just not cut out for it, which you would both know pretty quickly. If she is cut out for it, then it sounds like it could be a great opportunity for both of you, if you are wanting to grow your business. If you are not going to do this for her, she will likely have a really hard time finding a job, unless someone else is willing to do so, and if you are working for someone other than yourself, then you likely do not receive a high enough rate to be able to pay her a decent wage and still earn something for editing/mentoring. (Certainly not saying that you don't -- I obviously have no idea what you make, but not many people who are transcribing for others make enough to share that way :).)
My service is actually going to be (sm)

Comcast here in the next couple weeks.  Verizon is offering a 30-day free trial.  In the meantime I will keep my cable internet just in case I'm not happy with Verizon.  My cable internet service has been very frustrating for me, as far as not being available at least once a week for a couple of hours, always during my normal working hours.  So, I guess it's worth a try.

ASP Service
Finally :-)I am negotiating with one doctor to be my direct client. For that I need some ASP service where he can dial in as toll free and I can get dictations thru FTP. Anyone please recommend some best ASP with minimum per line cost & reliable. Thx!
