wants to work weekends and they need weekend coverage.

Most companies now are going a Tu-Sa shift of Sun-Thu.   Clinic work usually is M-F.

Anybody know of a place you can work just weekends (sm)
With going to DQS looks like the OT/bonus is gone.  Personally I can't make it without the extra (supporting 4 on one salary). Need to fine a place to work weekends only.  Anyone have any suggestions?
IC being asked to work OT weekends
I'm new to the IC business, always been a employee in the past.  Can a MTSO ask you as an IC to work overtime on the weekends if that was not what you signed up to do originally?  Do labor laws require an employer to pay overtime over 40 hours a week?  With the summer months and the other MTs obviously on vacation, we are backed up  at work but I don't want to work every weekend when I've put in a 40 hour week (my regular scheduled hours).  I have always volunteered but its getting old and since they cut our pay scale for ICs 6-7 months ago, I'm really not motivated to break my fingers as it were.  Does anyone know the legality issue of an IC being asked to work more hours?
I work graveyard on weekends
I can't say there's any real way to prepare for graveyard shift other than going to bed earlier the night before, this way you are well rested for your shift.

I work day shift and evening shift Mon-Thurs, but come 3 pm on Friday, it's bedtime for me. I work graveyard shift on weekends, and I love it. I don't really have a problem adjusting my schedule, as I have massive sleep deficit accrued all week.
The problems that I do find are with:
Family not getting it through their heads that I wake/work early on weekends.
Deliveries (UPS, FedEx) normally take place during the hours I would be sleeping.
Phone usually rings during the hours I sleep.

Other than those outside factors, no problem for me adjusting back and forth between shifts.

If they want to pay me 20 cents a line to work weekends.. I'm
and no I'm not making it up or exaggerating.. with 26 years experience you really CAN make excellent money in this business.
10K for 12 hour weekends, work privately

Work both jobs until you get new coverage or
buy your own policies.

It is a choice and you're making it.

If you're going to stay in hell, please do not complain about the temperature!
I always volunteer to work holidays, weekends, etc. because my husband is off
so he can watch the kids while I earn incentive and holiday pay.  Plus, I'm the one who has to cover so the childless women can go on cruises with their latest boyfriends or husbands, or they didn't show up for work because they met a guy at a bar and have the bottle flu.  Oh, poor you.  Life's unfair.  Suck it up and get over yourself.
How does it work full-time to have rotating weekends
My brain is fried with all this job hunting and I can't think.  All MTSOs want weekend commitments now.  If I offer to do rotate every other weekend for Saturday and Sunday, what does my schedule look like so that I still have two days together off, and without working 7 straight days (hope this makes sense...I'm so tired :(.
I also work from tapes and pretty much plan my day/weekends the way you do. sm
Agree with posters below-you owe nobody an explanation/excuse. It is your business/career to do as you see fit. Good luck.
Looking for weekend work

I have over 8 years experience in clinic transcription.  Any companies out there that hire for weekend work only?  Must be at least 8 cents a line.

weekend work
I just got weekends with Transcend services. they pay 8 cents a line. I said i wouldn't do op notes and they said okay. not too bad, tech support is GREAT and very helpful. if you try them out, drop my name??? Sue Broussard

GOOD LUCK
weekend work
I have never been asked to work on weekends, however I do work an occasional Sat. for a few hours just for extra $.  I sure would not want to have it mandatory!
I work 16-20 h every weekend for nat'l...
Fri-Sat-Sun for nat'l averaging 20+ hours per weekend and Mon-Tues-Wed privately which sometimes spills into Thursday. I am able to juggle the private mds days ad lib during the week and not so for the nat'l, though I can work for the nat'l during the week if low on pvt work (a rarity).
Weekend work
I am trying to locate transcriptionists who have to work every weekend, unless the physician is out of town (for which you are not notified).  I am trying to figure out how to get a weekend off without being penalized (which some companies penalize you for missing any work unless you are dead - those are the exact words one company that I work for used).  I have not had a weekend off in two years.  How long does one have to endure this kind of treatment by employers before you know it is time to move on.  Anyone with answers on how you handled this, I welcome your advice.
Weekend work

I work Tues-Sat normally as this was the time slot my employer needed coverage for.  However, I work for a very flexible company.  They are great.  I really hate the idea of working all day Saturday so they let me break it up over the weekend any way I chose.  I, like most of you, have a family and life outside of work but the good Lord  was smiling on me when he let me become a part of the company I now work for.  They are very flexible and will really work with you on schedules without penalizing you if you need time off for pretty much any reason as long as you give them warning that you need to be off as well as make up your hours.  I think the bottom line out there is that you are going to be treated as a professional if you behave as a professional (at least in my experience).  Anyway, my 2 cents worth.  I am finally back with a company that allows me to produce quality work and feel like I am a person and not a drone as well as being compensated as I should be with my transcription experience.

I work OT about every other weekend.
I only do it though because I need the money right now (hoping to buy a house soon). Otherwise, I would take my two days off as I really need them to recuperate and spend time with the family.
I work every weekend, some more than others - sm
but I have not had a weekend totally off in over a year. My 2 doctors tend to dictate late Friday night and it is due back in by 8 Monday morning, so I don't have much of a choice unless I get someone to cover for me. I just gave up an account as it was too erratic, feast or famine, and I just could not juggle 140 minutes a day and get it all done in TAT. But just took on a new account that is consistent and 3 of us will be on instead of me handling all by myself, so that will give me some extra $$$ I desperately need and more structure in my work week...and probably more weekend work unfortunately. Sometimes I put in 20 hours or more over the weekend, crazy.
I work almost every weekend, but I don't mind so much. sm

I don't have a husband or kids, and I'd rather work and let others be off, if possible.   It would be different if I worked in an office every weekend, but somehow, working at home, it doesn't seem so bad.  I can get up early, get my work done, and have most of the day left if I want to do something.

Sorry that you're unhappy with it.  Just part of the business, I guess.

So you do work in other locations during the weekend..SM
allowing you to get a work shift in while being gone from home? I suppose you would have to be somewhere with an internet connection, obviously, and bring your foot pedal, also. This sounds kind of appealing. Do you do this in hotel rooms? I'm not sure I'd be places where there is a wifi connection, would be my problem. Using the full-size extra keyboard is a good idea. That's definitely something I'd do. Thanks for the tip. I've never had a laptop so I didn't think about that.
Are you getting extra for weekend work and holidays.
:
Amphion does not require weekend work. sm
Set your own schedule.  No holidays or weekends required.  Good pay, good people, good accounts.
Hire someone to work per diem or for a weekend. NM

"

I have that very situation exactly, except I work a weekend every 8 weeks.
x
6-hour day, weekend work by choice, sm
optional access to group health ins even if I have to pay total premium, a company that understands what "IC" really means, a company that refuses to offshore US transcription, pay by gross line, pay based on quality and experience and no less than 9 cpl, but most of all,
CLEAR DICTATION!!

There are companies out there who do not require weekend work...sm
I have two right now that don't, but I can if I want to which means more work for me on Monday. So, sometimes I work and sometimes I don't. It is nice. I'm an IC.
Or after a boring weekend when working at a hospital someone asks "How was your weekend?" and

After finally switching my schedule to all weekend, every weekend
Seems like that's the only way I could get work with my MTSO. So, I do it. I am to the point where I will pretty much jump if they say hop,so I can feed my family. I would say it's sad, but I am actually glad to even have work and a decent check again. I am giving up a lot working every single weekend and days at the end and beginning of the week, but its daily work!
I am currently working all weekend every weekend.
I get so burnt out although I do have work on the weekends, and then there is nobody home or friends to do things with during the week because they are all working or at school. I really dislike this schedule a lot. Plus I never get to do anything on the weekends or plan for anything while everyone else is off. I wouldn't mind 1 day every weekend but 2 days plus Friday is really doing me in. Good luck to you whatever you decide. Do think long-term, because when I decided to go for this kind of schedule, I did not consider the repercussions of long-term every weekend day and Friday.
weekends
job seekers board -- one from 10/13 that says IC - op reports/genetics etc -- I talked to her  -- is looking for weekend people.  :}  Hope helps.
weekends
I think it's because everyone prefers M-F shifts and there just aren't enough people to pick up the load on the weekends.  Personally, I get on and transcribe as much as I can but my kids aren't here, they're in college.  Makes it tougher if you have little ones at home.  I think it would be wise if you can for the money and especially now with the holidays coming up.
I LOVE weekends........sm
Weekends not only pay more, the work is mostly ER.. chests, bones, etc. After MRI's and Specials all week, it's like being on vacation!
Who loves working weekends?

I DON'T!!!!!

Poll: Who is going to be working weekends more

It seems like there is more work on the weekends, and I guess this question is for SE/IC, more than employees, though it may apply to employees too.

Lots of companies seem to be advertising for mainly weekend and evenings, or shifts over the weekend, or actually giving preference on a bigger workload to people who do decide to work weekends every week.  Who has decided to go for that, since the work is there and so is the money? With the economy the way it is, this MT was just wondering if it makes sense to just grab the work when it comes in and less worry about the bills and the holidays.

Thanks in advance for your conversation on this topic.  This MT wonders because it is hard to get a gauge what is going on outside of this MT's company and wants to see how people are handling their workloads/wallets.

Have always worked weekends and second shift. nm
X
Me too. We get called all the time, especially on weekends....
It seems some people do not want to work at all on weekends, but if everyone would just get on and do 300-400 lines, the ones at our MSO would not be called every weekend.
coverage

I think it's great to see a thread discussing this subject.

However, when it comes to "prejudice," it has always been with us, since the beginning of time.  It is a human problem, not a white American problem, as so many people seem to be saying.  Some of the most prejudiced people I have encountered in my few decades of life have been non-whites.  When I lived in Latin America, I learned that brown-skinned people discriminate each other based on how light their skin tone is - the lighter the skin, hair color and eye color, the more prestige they had.  Some of our U.S. African-American soldiers were called derogatory names by the Somalians when we were over there - a real eye opener for them.  They thought they were "going home" and then were assailed with hatred and expletives because of their dark skin.

We all need to guard against letting our attitudes harden our hearts towards other people.  It is a life-long process.  I recently realized that my financial concerns because of income loss from this job of MT - with losing jobs to overseas, the foreign-born dictators making it so hard to earn a decent line count - were hardening my heart towards immigrants.  I am in the process of reassessing my attitude and thoughts about that.  I don't want to turn into an angry, hateful, bitter old bigot.

Coverage

That is the one problem with own accounts.  After three days to Tahoe-Reno I came back to 14 tapes as no one wanted anyone else.  But am thinking of taking nearly a week off later this year and so I would like some coverage.  I used to work for a small local MTSO here as an IC and still keep in touch and I might see if there is someone there that wants to do an extra tape or two during the week I am gone.  Also see if there is a chapter of local AAMT in your area -- and I am not sure if it is the national AAMT but here in Portland there is a group of MT's and I got a list of names from them who will do back up and overflow.  I haven't joined but have talked to a few people there and we do some networking.  I have been doing this for so long in the Portland area that I continuously run into people that did either the OHSU account I did or worked for one of the offices previously, etc.  It is a small world.  That is also how I get my people contact.  Also run an ad in the paper well ahead of when you are going to leave.  But there is always the fear that they could "take away" your account but since most of the gals that have helped me out I used to work with -- I don't worry about that.  And you know how it is the first few days on the account -- you don't do that well so they are either ready to kill my docs since I am so used to them or the office says -- "don't ever leave again" because that person does things different that we all appreciate each other immensely when I get back.  But there are ways, just gotta put a little effort into it.  They don't need to do it all but I came back to 14 tapes and if I could have had half done, it would have been nice.  Good luck.

What coverage?
say what?????
I'd be alot more interested in working weekends, -
overtime, holidays, etc. if what I got in exchange for that actually made any difference. Unfortunately it does not.
Thanks, we already have a used car without full coverage.

The payment's not that big on it, except when there's a mixup at the bank and they deduct one check twice with the same amount and same check number.  It just feels like the money mojo magnet is gone from my life this week!  LOL  Everything seems to go wrong all at once.

Vacation coverage

I have five accounts and two I have IC's who work for them -- psych accounts no problem when I leave town.  But my other three, have asked that I have NO ONE work on the account but me and they hold the tapes and I do them when I come back as fast as I can and sometimes wishing I had not taken time off.   No they work with me but then I don't take off much time and when I do it is usually a couple of days and the weekend so we are all not stressed.   If I were to have surgery or something I have friends that would help out and the accounts realize that it would be necessary.  That is one of the drawbacks of having your own accounts.  No work --no money.   But it does make you appreciate your time off.

If you are looking for single coverage, you

S/B able to get something reasonable.  If you're looking for family coverage it is doubtful you would find anything under $350.00/mo.  You might want to look into medical savings accounts.  You have to qualify for these and I'm not sure what the criteria is, but Google it.   If you are a non-smoker and have no pre-existing medical issues, aren't grossly overweight, and not planning a baby anytime soon, you might want to look at getting mainly a major medical plan that would cover you in event of hospitalization or something catastrophic, and just pay routine care out of pocket.

We currently have insurance through DH job, but when I was looking for independent coverage Celtic had the cheapest and then Medcost was the next cheapest.  I called several agencies and they all quoted me on Medcost, but the premiums varied as much as $200.00/mo.   BCBS has something caled Blue Advantage that you might want to look at.  I hate BCBS because they are such a pain to deal with and deny a large percentage of claims, but it might be an option.

If you have private coverage on yourself, you would not--sm
need workers' compensation on yourself. your private insurance would cover anything happening to you. If you have employees, they may need it, but only if you offered them employee insurance benefits. JMO.
I had individual coverage - sm
when I was IC and SE for a while.  It was expensive - but now I think it would be impossible as I am older.  Considerations are preexisting conditions.  My daughter lost her job and has Graves disease.  She is 23 years old and was flat turned down - no amount of money could get her coverage.  COBRA is costing 380 dollars a month until her new job's coverage kicks in.  If you have any preexisting conditions it may be extremely pricey.  Also do not let insurance lapse  - because anything you might have will not be covered for a period of time - usually a year.  If you are young and have no problems and depending on where you live - individual coverage can be found - before my daughter had problems we got it for under 100.00 a month.  Our state does have a program for people who cannot get coverage but I have not checked to see what that entails - you might call your state and see.
Probably people aren't too thrilled about being sick on weekends either. nm

I prefer weekends. I find most cherrypickers also avoid
weekends, so I at least get a decent selection of work to do.
1700 during the week, 2500-3000 on weekends
:-)
working 3rd shift and weekends sometimes gives you bonus incentive pay. nm
x
Thanks for your response. If I opt out of the cobra coverage,
does my current coverage stop immediately (last employment day), at the end of the current pay period, or at the end of the final pay period? Thanks!
medical insurance coverage
My dept. here in radiology transcription is possibly going to be outsourced.  I have been looking at possibly working at home for an agency if this happens.  I have done some looking and found that alot of agencies do offer medical insurance, but does anyone know how good it is and can you cover dependents?  Any information would be appreciated.
