what I did

I have four cats who are all trained to use their scratching place. I trained three of them as kittens and 1 as an adult. The key I think is to put their scratcher next to the piece of furniture they like to scratch and then using string toys play with them on their on scratcher up and over it, around it, so they know it is theirs. My cats never scratch my furniture. I haver 2 scratches 1 in the bedroom and one in the den. Cats can be trained to not scratch the furniture. Also as others say keeping their nails trimmed helps immensely.
