My main advice is to do these things once you start the actual transcription portion of the course:  Obtain a copy of the AAMT Book of Style, Second Edition and become very familiar with it.  Start using an Expansion Program.  Autocorrect in Word is pretty good.  But, if I had it to do over again, I would have purchase Instant Text or ShortHand right in the beginning of the course.  I have Instant Text now.  The main benefit is that it is portable from job to job, and I don't have to keep inputting my information over and over again.  This likely does not make sense to you now, but it will in time.  The other thing that I would advise is to keep a running list of difficult terms or words that you come across during the transcription.

Good luck!
