I recommend you go to the MQ board - they have their own, you know - and read the archives. You have to punch an "e time clock" and work exactly your schedule. Seems they frequently run out of work, and have to make up that time from their personal time. However, they may be more likely to hire a newbie than another national. Happy reading!

You will also find that many of their students DID pass employment tests and DID find employment.  It is all up to the individual.  I have said this before, and I will say it again... There are many MTs who never even went through MT school.  After you find your first job (I suggest searching for an in-house, local position first), stick with it for 2 years if you can.  At that point, employers more than likely will not even ask what school you attended.  They will see that you have on-the-job experience.  Again, it is up to YOU to decide whether your career in MT will be successful or not.
There is some info in the archives.

It would behoove you to search the archives on this subject
I think you would find that it is VERY difficult to break into this field and MT jobs are declining. Unless you have someone guaranteeing you can learn on the job with them, with only some medical terminology and transcription training, I certainly wouldn't count on it. People say lots of things. Especially when there is no way to confirm the accuracy of their statements.
Chekc the archives on the company board. Not
much posted about them recently, but not much good posted about them.  I certainly wouldn't recommend them.
Search the company board and the archives for info. nm

I went to school back in 1971 to be an MT and if I would have had my internship that they offered back then to work during the summer months (as it a was 2 year college), I would NEVER have finished my second year of school to be one.  Been doing this about 35 years and my pay has been torn in half compared to 1987 salaries.    Even working part time, don't think you would ever get a paycheck that would be worth anything.

And if you are doing this to stay home with kids, how do you expect to work as an MT with the headset on trying to figure out ESL doctors and watch the kids too?  This profession is definitely not worth it anymore, and if you are still young enough to go back to school, RUN, RUN, RUN and sign up for something else.

Check out Andrews and M-TEC if you want the best-nm

Reality check

When HIPAA went into effect that fateful October, the AMA did a survey and less than 50% of physician practices had any HIPAA compliance practices in place or had started preparing them.  That is a fact.  In the private office setting, the office can include anything they wish into their compliance notification their patients sign and their patients have the option to opt out of whatever sections they don't want to participate in.  That is a fact.

It is personal preferences in complying with HIPAA regulations, not just for the MD but for the patient.  That is a fact.

Reality check.
You may think you are a great MT or can be, but experience is not something you can fake. I have no idea if you are new to MT or not, but if you are trying to break into the field and plan to lie about your experience it will show and it will show in every aspect of your job. I know for a fact my company checks references and many companies do. Posting such a question is just galling. What kind of work ethic is that?
I agree - definitely check out M-TEC! nm

check what is required before u
take the exam. For myself, I did not take any exam at all and had been doing med transcription for more than 3 years now. I did, however, took a course as my background was engineering. If you are just new in this career, most companies will require a formal training. The fact that a lot of MTs are competing for jobs, you would be better off with a formal training (just like any other career). I hope this helps.
Could try RMT w/less than 2 yrs exp. check w/AHDI

Check with your school and see if

They may consider you.
Spell Check
Try to avoid using a medical spell checker while you are in school, but always use regular spell check. For employment testing, use both.

For troublesome medical terms you might consider creating an alphabetic electronic word list.

check with local hospitals
I contacted a local hospital (SW Michigan) and was told that they hire MT students and graduates. But they also said that all you really need is physiology, medical terminology, anatomy and typing skills. Seeing how you have a strong medical background, you might want to check into something like that.
Check with your local hospitals
Sometimes they offer training if you have the basics. There is a hospital in my area that will work with you for up to a year until they feel you are ready to be on your own. Definitely worth checking out.
My glasses are fine, thank you, you should check yours.

I never said the poster said those schools were approved, but when the poster makes a statement about the AAMT and then makes the following statement, "I also wouldn't recommend anyone to one particular "approved" school".  That comment could be confusing for someone unfamiliar with the industry because the only approved schools are Andrews and M-Tec, which the poster than proceeds to recommend.

It's obviously somewhat confusing because it managed to confuse you.

Double check your glasses...
Poster did not say the schools she/he mentioned were approved.
Check the "company" board
or do a search.
If you're going to be honest about it, you'd check nothing.
With just an education under your belt, whether it's At-Home or M-TEC, you have no working experience.

Been having extra taken out of DH check for 3 years now at the
advice of my tax guy and have had no problems whatsoever.  The IRS doesn't care where the money comes from, just that they get it.  We file a joint return.  If you file separately the situation might be different.
Reality check and kudos

To all you experienced MT's out there, I offer you my Kudos and job well done!!  As a new MT you think you "know it all" which, in fact, is not true.  I have downloaded a test from a MT company, and the Doctor's dictations are so out there, it could only take a highly qualified professional to decipher what is being said.

For new MT's just starting out, if you find a company who is willing to train you, be faithful to them.  Those companies are rare and it takes time to train you to be able to listen and transcribe some of these reports.

I appreciated all of you "seasoned MT's" and for the positive feedback that you post on this board.  Keep it up!!

I've seen talk on there of several companies that hire new grads.

I actually got hired at MQ right out of school - but it was a much different company then.  I worked there for 3-1/2 years and bailed when the first signs of sinking occured.

I honestly only have experience with them and the company I'm currently at - and I don't think my current one hires new grads.  Check out the company board though and I'm sure you'll find a company that will make you much happier than MQ could.

I don't have personal experience, but if you check through
the archives the 2 best schools are M-Tec and Andrews.  Some companies will waive the 2 years of experience if you completed the course work from the above.  I've never heard of the other school.
