How much info goes on second page depends on the document itself. It is highly unprofessional to have only two lines only or two lines and then a signature. If that's the case, change your margins and put it on one page or push more of it over to the second page. Only two lines in a paragraph or on a page is considered orphan or widow lines; there is not enough information to know for sure that the information on the other page really does go with those two lines--it leaves room for the possibility of confusion or switching of documents--which is way bad.


Left justify should be on your toolbar across the top of Word and looks like several lines which are even at the left side and uneven along the right side. The center key will be the next one and the left justify will be next, then--if it is on your toolbar with be left and right justify. This key looks like several lines, which are perfectly even along the right and left sides (like the newspaper).

I went through their mentoring course...did work as tests for almost a year. They called me one time and asked me if I would be interested in a new hospital acct they had lined up. Of course, I said yes. Never heard anything more about it. Well, I found THEM an acct that was looking for a small MTSO company to do some transcription work for them. I was told they had gotten called and would be testing for them soon, and i would be one of the testee's. HA! fat chance! They gave the accounts to three other of their STUDENTS and told me that after they had signed the contracts with this company, that they didn't get the acct. I smelled a rat...was highly T'd off, and still am unhappy with the way that went down. Use your own judgement of course, but honestly, i would not trust them for any work. Unless you only want to have two reports a week, and get paid .7 cpl which amounts to about $15.00. Good luck. ks.

whining. But as an MTSO, I couldn't agree more. The resume is your first contact with the MTSO. It had better be good because you only get one shot to go on to the next round.
Those are not unnecessary questions. VERY real questions.
If you are indeed a "big girl" then get some credible information and make a mature, informed decision for yourself.

Don't worry about it
You don't have to say you're sorry. Everyone gets burnt out from time to time. This board should be a place to vent as well as to get advice, help, etc. You don't have to be sorry for having a bad day and you shouldn't be made to feel guilty for it either.

Don't worry so much about VR and ASR
Sure, it's growing in popularity, but it's just not very good. An MT will always have to go over each and every one. Even if this technology ever does improve, reports will still need an MT (language specialist, Editor or whatever the latest name may be) to go over them to correct all the stuttering, redundant and miscellaneous things dicators say (such as "next, next, next; hold on; go back and add ...; go back and change...; the occasional curse word when they realize they are dictating a report they either already dictated or don't have all the information for; extraneous noises; etc., etc.). There are so very many things to fix from VR/ASR reports that MTs should be working for a very long time.

I started out only getting about 300 lines a day.  For me that was about 5 or 6 reports.  I've been at my current job for 10 months now and I'm up to 35-40 reports a day.  Just keep at it, you'll get your speed.  Just a suggestion...you might have one already, but I would definitely suggest getting a split keyboard.  It's better for your hands/arms and you'll pick up major speed once you get used to it.

You don't need to worry about this! The advice already given is very good. If you follow it, you'll learn to understand the dictation.

The thing is that physicians dictate like auctioneers. That's a good thing, because that's why they need MTs. If they talked slowly and clearly, anybody could do this work.

In all seriousness, your ears just need to listen faster. I know that sounds odd, but it's the truth.

You can take comfort in the fact that doctors say things the same way over and over, so once you've figured him or her out, you'll understand nearly everything.


Don't worry sometimes it takes
awhile to get the hang of it. I haven't been doing this very long either and it took me looking things up alot of the time to get it right. Left alot of blanks at first. But sooner or later you'll get to know the drugs that are used frequently and then you'll turn into a pro! Don't let it get you down, take it moment by moment if necessary! Any decent company who gives a new MT the chance, should be considerate and realize they cannot produce like a veteran MT. Speaking from experience working for myself and hiring several subcontractors, and also working for large nationals, the quality of your work will first be evaluated. With training and experience, your production will increase. If you need to reread, relisten, etc., do it because it will be well worth it. Research every word or phrase you are not sure of. In time, your brain will soak these terms up like a sponge. You will find yourself researching less and less. However, even veteran MTs continue to learn daily. I feel a good MT has good researching skills that never end. Good luck, keep your head up. Research and review your reports before submitting them.
Don't worry - you'll learn all that basic stuff
in school. They used to teach it in secretarial classes, of course, but if you know you want to be an MT, go to one of the top schools (M-Tec and Andrews), and you will be ready when it's time to test.

What an awful person I am trying to get them
away from a bad school. The bottom line is it is a BAD school. Just because people scurry around teaching themselves AFTER graduating from AHP and the likes doesn't mean they were successful because of AHP. They were successful in spite of.

I have talked to dozens of AHP students and graduates wanting me to help them and I have seen the material. To congratulate and praise them on choosing AHP is plain idiotic. If someone reads my negative comments and chooses a different school because of that, great!

Standards are raising in MT even if the pay is not. Companies want to hire people from an MT school and more often than not they want those people to come from a good one.

I am a new graduate (January of 2008) and I have been eagerly trying to just get my foot in the door, without the infamous 2+ years experience. I would be blessed if a company like this one would allow me to gain this experience, even at 0.05 cpl!!! Maybe it's just me though!
MT is not worth it anymore. Would not worry about past. Did need to give ID to be hired though.

Out of curiosity, I emailed this person. He is not trying to sell anyone anything. He has his own resume writing business (hence his email address) and he also does transcription. He had a lot of good ideas. I do agreee with you about sending professional letters though. Flyers seem cheap and impersonal. But I really think you should have gotten your facts straight before posting this reply.

Why are you so negative? All that person was asking for was the price of the course. M-Tec will not say that this is a job in which you can get rich fast. Everybody has their own story, and this goes for every type of job. M-TEC does offer top notch training. They also have a great reputation which will open the doors to a job as a "newbie." The rest is up to you. It is up to you how hard you study and how high your GPA is. Like in other jobs, the higher the GPA, the more opportunities you will receive. Of course you will have the learning curve in the beginning and might not make much money. You might only make 6 cents per line in the beginning. Anybody who is informed knows that anything is possible because so many factors play a role. There are great companies to work for, and there are companines that take advantage of their employees. You will find the same problems in the MT world as you will in other jobs. What is different is that you can work from home which save you time, money, aggravation. If you live in a rural area where there aren't many jobs, then being an MT, working from home, offers you opportunities you otherwise would not have had. If you do not like what you are doing, then maybe you need to get a different job. Why waste your time on a job you obviously do not like? For sure, you should not respond like you did to a simple question about the price of a course.
One person's sinking ship is another
I think that if someone is trying to gain experience and a company is willing to hire new grads and pay them, then so be it.  As long as the money is green, it will spend!  I don't work for MedQuist, but I know there are still happy MTs there, and they do have a lot of accounts.  I think it would be a good company to get your feet wet if not for anything else.  It is a company to put on your resume. 
not everything works for the every person, but what i have found.....
I started out many years ago working for a few doctor's offices (neurosurgeon, infectious disease, oncologist, urologist) in the same building. I would pick up tapes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and deliver work those same days. I worked seven days a week back then (probably still do). After years of doing and the cost of gas skyrocketing, I realized it would be more beneficial for me to work for a service (either independent contractor or employee). I signed on with a national company (MedQuist). I know there are a lot of people out there who are not happy with MQ, but I am. My accounts are good, so I can make a good line count. The only problem is that my accounts are so good that there are many MT's working on them, and I tend to run out of work early in the day. I have signed on with an additional company to fill the void in my day.

I think I saw somewhere that MQ was hiring MT's with little or no experience. If that is the case, I would consider MQ or another national to get started.

I don't know anything about the benefits offered, as I rely on my husband for that.

said, it is just a basic course and in way prepares you for being an MT.

I have had some challenges with interns, some requiring longer internships than others. Other newbies have breezed right through. I average the time from 3-4 months.

You are given a variety of family practice and specialty clinic work. You must meet 97% accuracy in medical terminology, medications, grammar and formatting before referral for contract is made. You will be contracted beginning at 7 cpl.

When you graduate, you take a doctor with you, one you have mastered and will get lines immediately. I assure you this is a legitimate internship.

You also receive new terms weekly.

If you currently type in word, then do a word count
then I really can be of no help.  Usually when trying to get an idea of a line count with spaces and without spaces, you can use this method.  Some people have actual line counting software.  I, however, do not, so I am not much help in that regard.  Hope this helps at least a little.

What course did you finish? How did you do? Do you have a kick-a$$ resume? Where are you "training"? Are you being paid for it? Where have you applied? What is your strategy? A little more information, please!

im signing up for the online transcription course through CareerStep and im really looking forward to it. these next few questions are aimed to those who are already a transcripitionist or anyone who knows the answers.

1. how hard or easy is it to find a job once you are graduated?

2. how much do you make starting out? and how much could you potentionally make?

3. is it hard to find a job that allows you to stay at home and do your job? especially when starting out?

4. what are your hours like? both at home or in a clinic?

5. is careerstep (if known) really helpful in finding you a job after graduation?


i have 2 kids and want to make sure this is going to be worth it if i have to work in a clinic and pay a babysitter.

Hello all you fabulous MTs!

I am seriously considering training to become an MT; however, I have some questions for you. I have noticed many of you discussing MT companies who are hiring overseas as well as many of you who are having trouble finding work. I understand the difference the prestige of your school makes and am wondering if there are any of you who have graduated from Andrews or M-Tec who have had problems finding work. I'm also wondering, from those of you who have been in the business for many years, what you see for the future of the MT profession. It looks like VR and EMR have been on the horizon for a long time and could jeopardize the industry but how many of you think this is rumor and how many of you feel it is a legitimate concern? I would hate to spend at least a year of my time and approximately $4,000 training for a career that will be obsolete soon. Oh, and one more question: Are there any of you out there who have successfully found work that pays well but you find the work unsatisfying? I'm trying to convince my husband that this job won't be too boring! Any advice you could give would be much appreciated.

If you were a new MT when you started out with this doctor, what did you do for 'QA' and where did you go if you had questions, etc.? I am thinking of doing this and would really be interested to know how you handled that? Thanks!
interviews: questions to ask?

hi, all.  didn't want to hijack "not sure's" thread...


i know what to ask when interviewing for a nursing position; the from-home MT thing is going to be a new one for me.  i've searched before asking this (maybe didn't use the right key-words).  any suggestions for what to ask a company? 


here's what i've jotted down:


1.  CPL;


2.  percentage of ESLs (not terribly huge, as i've worked with lots of foreign docs, both as a nurse and as MT);


3.  soft-/hardware used;


4.  TAT (if not stated in the offer/job-description);


5.  not sure how to phrase this...what the company considers "a line" (as in "how many characters);


6.  whether the rate includes spaces.


any other ideas?


BTW:  you guys are terrific.  thank you!


Questions regarding IC status

I just received a position as an IC. I have never been one before so how do I figure taxes and such? Also, I have been told that I would be able to deduct a lot of things since I do this out of my home.  What are some things that I can deduct? I was guess internet service but couldn't figure out anything else.

after reading some of your questions,

I wouldn't say you got the best MT education to be had.  I also don't see where you have interest in doing for yourself (that Stedman's Work At Home issue).  While you are looking at your insular little world, you haven't been around the past, well, even 10 years, to see the changes that have brought down this industry.  Ten years is not even considered one generation.  There will be need for GOOD MTs still for many years to come, but those positions will be held by the very best MTs to be had and who are still willing to work for the pay that goes down over time.  Many other positions that are now MTs will transition into something different, something still with a living to be offered but different just the same.


Just this year, my employer restructured its pay scale so that in order to make the same cpl, I had to produce an additional 4000 lines per month.  If I didn't, I suffered a pay cut of 1 cpl.  Obviously this has not happened to you.  I've been at it much longer than I suspect you've been an adult.  I do not plan to leave the industry although my alternate education is already in place.  I'm lucky because my skill set is very much in demand.  I am a high, accurate producer with flexibility and if I'm making money, my employer makes much more.


But I didn't get there by patting myself on the back and asking questions that some research would help with and save myself the embarrasment of my peers for not having done the research.


As to what school to go to, read the writing on the wall and take one of the top 3.  This industry has changed just in a few short years and if you don't know everything that everyone is doing, someone without education from the top 3 will have a more difficult time getting placement after schooling.


JMHO, which is free, and you're welcome to do with it what you will.


Pricing questions for new mt

I just got an account with a local doctor doing clinic notes part time.  Will I be considered an MTSO since there is no middleman?  Is .11 cents a line reasonable for 24 hour turn around?  How long do you stay at that rate?  The only transcribing experience I have is from Career Step where I graduated two years ago.  I am in the southern Illiniois area.  Is it recommended to charge more for consult notes?  I have seen examples of $2 per page and .6 cents per line. 


Also, is anyone aware of the HIPPA requirements for emaling transcription files back to the doctor?  He sends them in WAV files and I send them back password protected.


Any help would be appreciated!
