It will depend on what course you are taking.

would depend on font, margins, etc. sm
if you really want to know how many words are on a page in your typed format, paste it into MSWord and then use Tools, Word Count.
It will depend on your fonts and margins.
Different fonts and margins will give different gross line counts. If a line in your document has more than 65 characters, you are "getting screwed." If a line has less than 65 characters, you are probably making an average wage.
ESL dictators

I'm sure they are, but certainly there must be entry level positions that would not require ESL transcribing. I would hope to gain some on the job experience first. Just out of curiosity, I was offered a job but the contract that they wanted me to sign seemed way out of line. I'm wondering if this is customary?

Difficult dictators
Ask for one week of dictation of nothing but this one dictator.  I guarantee you after a full week of listening and getting used to the "cadence" of this particular person, you will begin to know what is being said.  ESLs oftentimes have limited vocabulary in English and you will find them using the same phrasing throughout the PE, for example, which they reel off very quickly and then will slow down for pertinent findings.  We have a few difficult dictators and have found the only way for someone to train is to do that one dictator for at least one week and no one else.  Once that occurs, you will be requesting that dictator (believe it or not) and will spin through the transcription.  I have seen it happen with at least 6 MTs already.  I hope this helps.
As far as fast dictators,
you should be able to slow it down with your program. If not, you'll just have to do a lot of stopping and starting.
ESL dictators are everywhere in the MT world.
If you can't do them, you are going to be severely limited.
Fast talking dictators
What do you guys do when you get a dictator who rattles off words so fast you have no idea what they are saying?  I have tried to slow down the dication but it still doesn't help.  I can barely make out a word this guy is saying.  Half of my typed document is blank spaces and I don't want to turn it in to QA this way.
Unfortunately, if you can't understand the dictators, you're not going to be able to do the wo
That's the reason for testing in the first place.
Probably make in the low teens at first, unless you get lucky with great dictators. nm
b
Guess what, it's not just the testing. MANY doctors are terrible dictators.
Sometimes the dictation they use for the test is from the actual doctors they are hiring MTs for. If you can't do it on the test, you can't do it, period.
Easy for you to say
Sure they are worth more than that. But the world is apparently changing and not everyone can afford to "hold out" and not work until the right thing comes along. I'm very happy for you that you could do so, not everyone is so fortunate and may have to scratch a little for a while. I suppose you would prefer that newbies just never get work at all if they have to start at a low rate? That's not fair. Then again, if they don't work right out of school, you'd probably say they "went to the wrong school." Give newbies a break. Wern't you new once yourself?

They are VERY easy. nm

not as easy as it looks, my dear...

there's a reason why most MT's don't have their own accounts. It's a bear to figure it out. Do you have the nerve to cold call on 20 to 50 offices? Have you, as of yet, even started on an informational brochure to leave? Have you found a source to let you know who the new doctors are in the area?  You say, "I might as well get my own accounts if I have to do so much footwork," but let me ask you, what have you done yet? It takes a lot of self-starting to be an MTSO. No one will babysit you through it. You will have to find the creativity to get started and find out what works. If you would "love to receive all my files off the internet," pretend you have a client who has offered you the work. Then research the options, figure out how you would do it, right down to HIPAA recommendations, prices, and how you are going to get that account covered when you take your kids to Florida on spring break, and then you might have a chance. I have heard it many times "I would love to have my own business," but most people won't take step 1. Good luck .

I would love any advice on how to start up my own accounts.  I'd love to receive all my files off the internet.  Any advice...... Please

Is radiology easy?
I would really like to try it, but i dont know whether you will provide the wav file, then only i can say whether it is easy
That's an easy bet when there's no way to prove it
Let's get back to having a serious conversation, not blatant bragging. Most of us have enough confidence that we don't need that kind of nonsense.
PT is an easy field.
i type a PT account from home. Like any other field, you just get used to it and it's easy. I think you should do well. susan
I agree, radiology is easy, but
there is a bigger threat of being replaced by VR unless you are so good that the radiologist will fight to keep you if needed. Most of the terminology is anatomical terms. They don't change like drugs do, so there are no excuses for getting anatomy wrong. You have to have a large English vocabulary, have great grammar skills, have a 99.5% accuracy rate, and not mind transcribing lots of short notes as well as some two-pagers. If you prefer getting 20-minute reports all day, you won't like radiology. Most of the dictators speak very quickly and efficiently, which is what I like.
FTP Voyager is a good one......easy to use
xx
No way to tell. Is the software easy to use? Will you be looking up addresses? Making a log? Having
s
Huh. The psych I've transcribed has been easy and boring.
There weren't a lot of shortcuts possible, but it was mostly typing regular English.
Employment tests are not easy, even for entry level.
They need to know what you know. Sometimes the things you blank are just as important as the things you get right.
My final exam was all but ' simple, easy, clear
transcription. It was 70 pages long, 98% accuracy, the audio was mediocre. It was a good school, but not M-Tec or Andrews.
Totally Agree
I two small children and I get up at 4:00 a.m. to start my workday as to have the peace and quiet to perform my job. If you are willing to make adjustments, it can be done but it isn't all glorified like some teachers like to make it out to be. You do have the opportunity to make good money but it takes time and dedication. It isn't just a fly by the seat of your pants sort of thing.
totally agree

The whole reason I got into transcription was to stay at home with my babies!!!  I started when I was 21 (daughter was 2).  She stayed home with me until the day she started kindergarten.  I have another child (now 2), who will never go to a daycare. I get so aggravated when people call it "PRESCHOOL"  give me a break!!!  It is daycare.  It is somewhere you take your child because you cannot take care of him/her.

As far as the social skills, take them to a play group, enrol in gymnastics, storytime at the library, etc.etc.    I know not all are so lucky, but my sister (kids aunt) loves to watch my kids for a few hours a few times a week.  She LOVES my kids.  Daycare workers do not.

totally off the subject
Hello, Does anyone have or have heard of men going online to chat with women from those dating websites? if so what's your take on it. do you think they are really trying to hook up or just playing. I was told it was a MAN thing and everyone does it (i guess all men) I was told that the reason for doing it is to see how far they can get, to see what these women would fall for. I don't buy it. but I am just curious how many people out there are doing this

I totally disagree with you
I took Allied's course and I have two jobs. I applied with over 100 companies, and all of them allowed me to test. It was my decision on whether to take their offers or not. Some of the tests I did not pass, I cannot lie about that. But I totally DO NOT blame it on Allied.

For people to post on these boards saying that they HAVE to take the M-Tec or Andrews course is just insane. I do agree that there are some schools that do not prepare you. All of the jobs saw that I took the Allied course and still let me test.

I do not know why people are so quick to judge or try to bring new MTs down.
Wow, totally agree. Can't believe
you have waited 2 years. I had a job before I was even out of school and have been with 2 other companies also since then (and still am). I agree with the above poster. Just send your resume, look on the job seekers board, MTjobs.com, post your resume, etc. Someone has got to give you a chance! Good luck!
totally agree
xx
I totally agree.
Maybe QA couldn't figure out the remaining blanks.
I totally understand.
Although I was able to start working right away after completing training for a very newbie rate, I soon realized there was a great deal that I not only did not know, but had never even heard of. Currently, I am considering VLCs refresher course for MTs to try to bridge the gap between what I know now and what I feel I should have learned from my training program. If anyone knows of another basic or refresher MT progrom, please feel free to let me know.
I totally agree with you! *sm*
Amanda: Good for you!!!!

I can see why a newbie would make less based on production. I don't see why a newbie MT should also have to suffer from a ridiculously low line rate. These companies that offer such line rates should be ashamed of themselves for cashing in on other people’s hard work!

Totally disagree
Congratulations should NEVER be spelled incorrectly by an MT. We are grammar and spelling specialists, are we not? In my opinion, if you are not able to put together an e-mail with correct spelling and grammar, you are in the wrong business (and I don't mean a little typo). From what I've seen, there are plenty of people in this business who should not be because they can't use the English language properly. That's the basis of all other MT learning and skills. It's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
That simple, easy, clear dictation practice is what the crappy schools use.
Then the person graduates, thinks they know what they're doing, and are totally shocked when they start trying to do REAL MT work. One of many reasons these cheap, crappy, found-out-about-it-on-a-matchbook-cover schools AREN'T recommended.
I totally agree. It's amazing

how many mispelled words and poorly structured sentences you see on this board.  Most of them are not typos, the words are just flat out mispelled.  I know that this a 'board' and that it isn't formal communication, but geeeez.  Some of these posts make me gasp.  No wonder MTSO's are having such a hard time finding good people.

The majority of the people who are on this board inciting riots, or at least attempting to, are the main people whose posts are loaded with ebonics. It really amazes me.  I would love to see some of the work these people do.

totally agree mommymt

Give her a break - she is trying to work and contribute to society yet wanting to remain home with her children.  They will remember that their mom was home with them when they were little, not that they were dumped in day care with strangers.  Who knows what kind of care kids really get at daycare?

There are plenty of very good videos and shows they can watch or she can work while they nap.  You people are incredibly rude.  There is more than one way to raise well rounded children and the BEST way is with love from their  mother - not a daycare provider.

Coding/Billing is TOTALLY different
from MT work. You are not trained or qualified to do MT work.
Not that I disagree with you totally, but (see inside)
there just aren't many hospitals in many areas any more where people can work. Many of them hire services.

Graduates of Andrews School and M-Tec seem to have no problem getting hired or keeping their jobs at home right out of school. "Grads" of the "matchbook" schools are the ones who need all the extra in-house assistance.
I totally agree with you, terminology is horrible!
NM
I agree totally with these ladies! Especially about the school! sm

The school that I went to was "plain and simple".  I have given up and working at something else.  If I knew then what I know now, I would only go to the two schools that are mentioned.  Too bad we can't live our life backwards!

The ladies on this forum are amazing.  The knowledge they have are from years of hard work, study and a good school.

But I find they like my jokes!  So I continue to post here to take them away from their work every once in awhile.  Maybe take them to outerspace or down a river! Ha!  Sometimes just have them rolling on the floor is enough for me!!!  Same place I was when I read some of the jokes!   And just add my 2 cents!

Great post. I totally agree! nm

i totally agree with Patty. In a docs ofc. is where it can all start.
.
that is rude of you to type that.
I'm sure that is why you did not post a screen name. Worried people may start screening your typos too.
If you don't absolutely know it, don't type it.
Blank it. Don't just type what you hear. Know what you are typing.
average MT can type 200 LPH...but...nm

With these new online programs, post DOS programs where we really cleaned up, that has dropped for some to between 130-175 LPH....A great MT should be able (pre online programs I do believe, my opinion only) to type nearly 2000 lines in an 8-hour period or 10-hour period. If I could do that on DOS programs, anyone could, and privately I still work on a faithful DOS program and for 10 years.

Decades of typing pre MT work helped and then 25 years of doing MT work is what makes some of us pros.

Go to rxlist.com and type in what

it sounds like to you.  They will have a list come up with any drugs that s/l what you typed in and it lists what they are for and generic names if appropriate.   If you can't hear but the ending of a drug - for example "illin" is all you can make out type in *illin and it will list all drugs with that ending and maybe you can figure out the rest that way.  If ever in question never guess on meds.

A lot of times new drugs may not be on rxlist, in which case you have to google, but be sure you have a reliable source as there is a lot of garbage and misinformation on google.

I have Quick Look on my computer and it is very helpful.  There are so many drugs, some you will have frequently and some that you may have once a year or so, and then new drugs are added all the time.

You'll get better with practice, but you'll have to do a lot of looking up in the meantime.

When I go to the drugstore I walk up and down the aisles and look at products on the shelf.  At the pharmacy if I am able to see meds from the counter I look at the names.  New meds usually have ads in magazines and on TV and I make notes about them.

Check out the All Type ad
They may consider you.
diabetes mellitus (cap or not?) type 2.
Is the word "type" capped?
thanks
type 2 is correct, no caps

What type of education did you get? What did you study?
??
Please don't type in all caps, it comes across as yelling. (SM)
You might get more responses if you downplay the tone a bit by that one simple change.
