Information
Thank you soooo much for the information and helping me to make an informed decision..................:)
I don't have any information on it, but if you want to
most are CareerStep, M-TEC, and Andrews.  That doesn't mean other schools are no good, it just means that those are the most recognized in the online community.  If you want to work on site in your own city, take a course offered on site in your own city because that will be more recognized.  Hope this helps.
MT Information

Hi,

I have just read some of the responses on becoming a MT. I was wondering if anyone had more detailed information regarding how long it actually takes to get certified, cost and realistic opportunities after graduation. Are most jobs in hospitals, doctor's offices etc. or are most work-from-home? What can a new graduate expect for an annual income? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Information regarding M-TEC
I believe that the software requirements can be found on the M-Tec website, but I have not checked lately. You need Word and that is it. I would not buy any additional books before you actually start the course as you receive a large number of references. This information can also be found on M-TEC's website. How you decide to take notes will be your decision. Some use OneNote, some Excel, some Keynote and some take notes with paper and pen. You will receive all the references and tools necessary to be successful. The rest is up to you. It is a tough course and prepares you well for working afterwards. Once you graduate, you will have access to a job board, and you will realize that M-TEC will open many doors for you. All this information can be found on their website and on their forum. You can also ask questions on the forum or just call or e-mail M-TEC, and you will receive all the answers. While taking the course you can share the computer as long as you can ensure that you have access for a certain length of time every day and/or during the week. For work I would recommend having a dedicated computer. There are several companies that provide a computer to the MT, and I think that has been discussed here on MTStars on the company board.
Thank you for the information!
I've already download it the trial.
I need some information please

I have recently submitted a resume online and have medical transcription experience. It has been a few years, but I have been a processor for the government and am a fast and accurate worker. Long story short, I stumbled upon this area, checking out a certain company that is interested in me, and they want me to test. I see they are listed in this area, but I want to see if it is a job, or a school. Can any one speak out and advise me please? I am looking for a good home based position, but want to see what the company is like, as well as the employees.

Please, if anyone is out there, reply to me. I have been unemployed by the government after a huge lay off and am trying to keep my home for myself and my disabled child. I hope my prayer will finally be answered.

Thanks for letting me in.....

This is not first-hand information about M-Tec, but
I cannot recall ever seeing anything negative about any aspect of M-Tec on any MT board. I also do not recall ever hearing of any successful M-Tec graduate who was not able to find employment. The key to the success of schools like Andrews and M-Tec is that they prepare their students very thoroughly, and employers are well aware of the quality of their courses and are therfore eager to hire them. If I had it to do all over again, knowing what I know now, I would absolutely have no qualms about signing up with either Andrews or M-Tec. Hopefully, an M-Tec graduate will be able to give you a definitive answer about placement. M-Tec personnel have a reputation for integrity. I have never seen any negative comments about any of them on any MT board. It would seem quite safe to rely on any claims they make about their placement success.
That's okay. No need to verify the information
It would be nice if their web site would list medical transcription and the credentials of the instructors. That's not your fault. I'm disappointed in the way community colleges handle it because it shows a lack of respect for the medical transcription course they offer. That's their problem though, not your responsibility. I just thought maybe your school was diferent and had verifiable information. Thanks anyway for your reply.
M-TEC is always forthright with information

I know it might sound odd to some, but we do pride ourselves on telling the truth (and nothing but the truth) to prospective students, current students, and graduates about the industry, job opportunities, and the profession in general. We are not like some of the matchbox schools who are trying to enroll everyone and anyone off the streets. We have a pre-enrollment test, and we pride ourselves on the difficulty level and quality of our program. We only enroll as many students as we know we can handle. Period. We won't tell you that this course is going to be easy, nor do we tell you that you can do this from home in your jammies with kids on your lap. We take this profession very seriously, and we expect our students and graduates to do the same. Our placement rate is high and, while the biggest percentage of our employers who hire our graduates are looking for full time employee status (what a great opportunity that is by the way), many of them will also still hire part-time. It is easier by far to make this a career choice and prepare for full time position so that you can continue to train your ear and update your skill levels once you graduate. If part-time is the only option for you, we will work with you to that end. Those are the facts.

That having been said, I would be more than happy to talk with anyone who is sincerely interested in our program or medical transcription in general. Please feel free to email at sfrancis@mtecinc.com or call toll free 877-864-3307 and talk with me or any one of our staff at your convenience. :)

The websites will have a lot of information..sm
about price, what you get for your money, how long you can expect the course to take, etc. Any other questions can be directed to the school and they will be happy to answer your questions. Just don't let price be the only consideration. The value of the materials, instructors ability, and marketability should be considered.
You cant put someone's personal information out there like that. nm

HELP--On-line course information..??
I have been an MT for 13 years and have a friend who is trying to enter this profession via an on-line course.  She asked me if I know of any.  Can anyone tell me about an on-line program that includes training in Expander programs that is a legitimate program and recognized and accepted by employers?  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Sites with more concrete information

At www.mtchat.com there is a forum faq called "Interested in MT?" which has some great info.  Also, check out MTEC's website; under prospective students are some good links--the "Is MT right for me?" also has links to AHDI's website, as well as the Bureau of Labor's information on the field of MT. You can also search this website...

I have to say, this isn't an "I'm in it for the money" field; you have to like this work to do it and be happy.

information site for newbies
I am a newbie at this as well and have gathered information from what I have learned through the courses and have compiled them into a blog. I yet have more to talk about and share with other newbies. You may want to check my job links list as there are a few that are hiring new MT graduates. You can visit it at
http://www.workathometranscription.blogspot.com/

Hope this helps.

LOL, gotcha!

Great way to put it

Thanks so much for your response.  That helped a lot!

I think I am just scared and need to get over it.

Hopefully some day soon I will be stopping by your pub as a Module 1 student.

great
yeah, some positive messages for newbies/students!
LOL! Thanks. I did wonder a bit. Have a great
.
great
Awesome, great to hear before I waste my money! Thanks!
I know it's not great, but...
it's a start. I don't expect to become a millionaire overnight, but I didn't expect that when I took the course. I didn't say that the MTSO was sainted, and done nothing wrong. I also won't be dissappointed if my check only adverages about 400.00 a week. I don't have to pay for gas, I get to stay home with my kids, and most of all, I get the experience that I need to find a better job. And to be totally honest, since my husband is dying and can't work, and I have two small children to take care of, right now, anything is better than nothing. I know that all of you are just trying to let me know that I probably will not make as much starting out, and not to get my hopes up. I really appreciate that, but you have to understand my situation to be able to understand why I'm so excited.

I have 0 experience. This is the first company that gave me a chance. I also have an associates degree in business. As soon as I learn the ropes, and get a little experience, I plan on opening my own company. With a little hard work, I can make this job work for a while, and I am willing to do that. No one starts out at the top. I just have to be excited because right now, it's all I've got to keep from giving up all together. Please let me enjoy my happiness for a moment at least. I don't get much of it.

Everyday, I watch my husband die a little, I watch my children grow up without a father, and until now, the four of us lived off of 700.00 a month. Now, maybe I can afford to by them a bag of m&m's if they ask for it.
great
I will definately check out that website. I'm assuming it is adhi.com? And yes spell check is not a bad idea. Is there anything bad about putting medical terms that I commonly have trouble with into my user word list? My school said that spell check is a no-no but it has saved my butt a time or 2.
that is a great question
One I have been wondering myself.
Thanks for the great advice! nm

Great idea!
Thanks for the tip!
I went to a not-so-great MT school. However,
I supplemented my weak areas with other materials and was able to pass MT employment tests before even graduating my course. I did the SUM tapes for practice dictation, read every sample report I could find, and independent study for pharmacy and A&P.
Wow, great comeback!
nm
That's a great idea! Let's do.
Best idea I've heard all day.
I am doing just great without having gone to any MT school.

I'm sure all are great, but I chose CS.
I also posted my answer on the main board for you, but here it is again.

I am also working right now typing acute care. I was hired before I graduated, so now I'm trying to finish the course in my spare time. Andrews and M-Tec are great schools, I am sure, and any school you choose would be a good choice. Good luck!

Great way of explaining it.
I was trying to not sound so....  ya' know.  I just didn't want her to think that you needed some sort of special phone line.  However, some companies that use C-phone may require you carry a long-distance plan, but they may reimburse you.  Happy C-phoning.  I kind of liked it when I used it, but I no longer do.
great post... nm

Great Post!
Couldn't have said it better mahself!
great advice!
I just wanted to say I've been transcribing 10 years and I think this is FANTASTIC advice!
A great site
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
M-TEC is a great school. They will help you. nm

Great Schools
I have also heard nothing but great things about these schools. I signed up for MTEC three weeks ago and have learned so much already. They are SO thorough and comparing them to a local home-study class I took about 11 years ago, they are wonderful!
If you go on the MTEC website to the message forum, you will see messages on there every day from current and past students and they are pretty much all 100% positive. I'm not sure about Andrews. I almost signed up with them, but I changed my mind at the last minute for some reason. I am soooooo glad I'm with MTEC. They make it fun and interesting to learn.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

It's a great course, and it would work
your brain. You'd learn a ton from it. You would use everything you learn from the course, and have the skills to research new terms.

Being afraid of medical terminology and wanting to be an MT would be like wanting to be a plumber but being afraid of funny smells, working in small places, and getting dirty.
