I also have this happen and so do a lot of MTs I know...sm

I have a huge packet of MT information that my mom reasearched for me before I started in this field five years ago.  It is probably about 75 pages full of any and everything you would want to know about being an MT.  It lists schools, companies, companies that hire newbies, etc.  I copy it and give it to them.  The ball is now in their court.  It is a start in the right direction and if they are really interested they can research the material I provided them with.

I've had so many people ask me to train them and there is no way I have the time to do that.  My mother-in-law did that for me and I trained in her office for two years.  This is not a field that you can learn overnight.  It is hard work and very time consuming.

what would happen
If I lied about how much work experience I have
Had that happen to me.

My company kept complaining of backlog, backlog, backlog, now they hired too many MTs and work is running short, at least on my account.  This is where I see the position as a "Casual MT" that some companies are offering as a great idea.

Anyway....after 2 weeks of barely getting an hours' worth of work a night, I e-mailed my team manager and another guy higher up and threatened to quit if I didn’t start receiving enough work for a shift.  Now, I have enough work every night for 2 shifts, practically.  I have a great accuracy rate and work a lot of weekends, so I used that as leverage.

Good luck!

Amanda

I've had that happen
I've tried a few accounts and currently (unfortunately) am pretty much stuck entirely on voice recognition on escription (equates to low pay). As a newbie, you've got to get work and cut your teeth somewhere. With each account I've had, even on platforms other than escription, work tends to run low and out at times and there is a learning curve when starting new accounts between the MTSO, account specs and dictators. Often, the new account won't even start up when it is schedule to.

Just persevere and keep the faith. As long as you are working and getting your "newbie time" in, you are doing well. Many grads and new MTs don't even find work.
I happen to know two of the people you "hired" - sm
And one informed me of the shareware she purchased from you. It was Express Scribe and she found out later that she could download it for free at www.nch.com.au/scribe/. I invite everyone to check it out. And there was not a foot pedal involved at that time.

And of course you want to take this into personal e-mail so you're not exposed for the scammer that you are!

Also, if you're giving everyone a break, then why don't you deduct the cost out of the new employee's first paycheck, as other MTSO's do, instead of taking their money upfront?

Yes, MTs are struggling to get into this field. We don't need con artists giving us glimmers of hope and then ripping us off. I'm so glad I didn't buy into your scam.
That's a matter of each persons opinion. I happen to like
MT, I have my own accounts and do the work myself.  I get up, take little breaks in between and don't beat myself up.  I also have a separate private life outside of work, so for me I am not isolated.
NEW GRAD WITH A JOB! YES, IT CAN & DOES HAPPEN! I'M NOT AN ANDREWS OR M-TEC GRAD!
I just wanted to share that I'm a new grad from EvCC/CS (Everett Community College utilizing CareerStep courseware), and I GOT A JOB! I'm IC status doing straight transcription and start working from home June 1st! I was offered .08 cpl, 24-hour TAT, and no ESL!

I'm posting my news here for a couple of reasons:
1. I want all the new grads out there job hunting to see that there are companies out there willing to hire you! I applied to only 4 companies, and I got this job on day 18 of my job hunt!
2. I'M NOT AN Andrews OR M-Tec GRAD! I believe those are probably great schools, but they are not the only schools that produce grads who get jobs! I graduated with high honors and earned real transferable college credits. If MT work does decline in the future and I need training in a different field, my credits will follow me.

I do believe getting that first MT job is about being in the right place at the right time! I also feel very lucky to have only applied to 4 places before landing this job, but my training played a huge part in that "luck." This company requires 100% on their employment tests, and without the great training I received, there is no way I would have made 100%.
In the end, great training, determination, hard work, and great networking skills will get you an MT job!
