If it was a specific question where it can be looked up, but it is a S/L.

Why is their a Word Help Board if it is cheating to use it?  The dictation test is hard.  Any word that I would be given under the word board as S/L I do go back in and research to make sure that it is the correct word.  But there are times when you cannot get the spelling close enough to find it and you have been researching for hours.  Wouldn't QA get just as upset with always getting blanks because you are afraid to ask someone else.  If I was in-house wouldn't I be able to ask someone to listen and find the answer also?  But life is easier now that my Stedman's has finally come in.  Newbies tend to not have all the resources they need when they first start.

FYI usually open-book tests within the public schools have a specific answer they are looking for and they have been covering that very specific information for a week or two.

At the college level open-book usually are take home tests.  If you think for one minute that the members of that class are not having a "study session" that night with the test in hand, think again.

I looked at about 500 resumes from MTs we've employed lately.  Just a small number come from M-Tec, Andrews or Career Step- about a half dozen.  I didn't do anything scientific.  I was just curious.

There seems to be an impression that these 3 schools are the only way to get educated in this field and get a job.

Our records don't bear this out.  Most of our MTs come from Community Colleges (I call them Junior Colleges) and have a 2 yr degree.  Our MTs come from all over the country too.  From what I've seen, their curriculum is heavily slanted toward HPI which is an old stand by.

So that info is for all the graduates from other schools who may be fearful because of what is written here.  AND again, I'll say that we don't hire any newbies without a short internship, but we pay well so we can be picky.

For what it is worth.........

with a particular test, I don't think it matters exactly how you indicate a blank, just that it is done in an understandable manner.  Once you are working, your employer will provide all the format details necessary for the account(s) you will be working on.  Each account determines its own format, which is something you would have no way of knowing until you are hired and given samples or instructions, so I wouldn't worry about format when testing other than to be clear and consistent.

Libby, thanks for your response.  It was encouraging, although I must admit I'm somewhat discouraged.  I'm worked hard trying to learn, and I've been working equally as hard now trying to get a job as a medical transcriptionist.  Can you tell me, on all of the MT tests, do they want you to transcribe exactly as dictated?  For instance, if he says as one heading - COURSE IN THE HOSPITAL - Should I transcribe it exactly that way, or should I transcribe HOSPITAL COURSE?  There are several other instances, can't remember exactly now...but one of the dictations had DISCHARGE MEDICATIONS dictated some longer way, but I transcribed it DISCHARGED MEDICATIONS:    And that brings me to another point, when you list diagnoses or medications or whatever, does it matter which format you use....i.e. DIAGNOSES:  1) -------, 2) -----, 3) ----- etc, or DIAGNOSES and list them under the heading as 1.

                               2.     etc??????

Any help you or anyone can give to me will be greatly appreciated.  I really need and want to get to work asap.  Thanks!
