It isn't all about dollars...value counts! sm

In Reply to: why? - MT who did fine without them

If most companies don’t check references, why are so many people here complaining that they can’t find a job?

Before choosing a school I contacted several companies to find out which schools they hire from and why. Andrews was the most recommended school by far. The people who hire MTs think highly of Andrews because Andrews graduates are qualified to do the job (their words, not mine).

A signed certificate that anyone can copy for a buck? I have too much self-respect to fake my qualifications. Do you really think that someone who isn’t qualified would be able to keep a job for long? For me this isn’t just about going to school and getting a pretty certificate to hang on my wall, it’s about acquiring a marketable skill that will enable me to earn a living.

I can see why you would think the ‘top three’ are overpriced if you believe that all you get for your money is the SUM program. I’m taking the Andrews course and I can tell you that I am getting much more than just the SUM program. I have an extensive library of reference books, many qualified instructors who are just an email away, every transcribed report that I turn in is reviewed character-by-character by one of my instructors (and if there is a mistake they will find it!). If I have a problem in a particular area, my instructors work with me until I understand. When I graduate from Andrews I know I will be qualified to do the job and do it well. It isn’t simply about dollars and cents….value counts!

Is it possible for someone to get the SUM program and find a job? Anything is possible. Am I getting more out of Andrews than SUM? I certainly am! I’ve invested a lot of time and money in my MT education and I think each and every penny has been well spent.

If you can create normals this will help tremendously with your line count. Also be sure to utilize any samples that you have available. If you are not using a word Expander already, that will definitely help your speed. The biggest factor in being fast and getting a good line count is to know your stuff and that just comes with experience. When you are first starting out there are a lot of things that you have to look up and that takes a lot of time. Once you get more experience you will find that you don't have to look up as many terms and your speed will pick up.

    Good luck!

There is free software out there on the Internet called MP count.  You could download that and scan a document that you have typed to get an idea of words/lines. There are different settings you can use with this program to calculate lines with spaces, extended, and so on.  Perhaps this could be of some help.  Good luck!

My line counts have not been close to what my employer gives.  In fact, there have been a few times already when files that I had done were not included in the line count.  Is this a common problem?

you really have to work on your macros. I currently have about 6,500 word Expanders that I use. Another thing is that if I have a blank I look it up then so I don't have to go back. I really check my lab data numbers well and my medications well as I go. I have learned to proof read as I go so I don't have to go back. Every day or so I will will give myself a "suprise" edit and just go back and check one chart to make sure that accuracy is fine.

I have been doing this for 15 years so I guess that is an added bonus.

    Good luck to you.
