searching for a job
Hey I know what you are going through.  I have started to look for other type of work at this point.  I have taken alot of test but never know the outcome.  Im not a real great grammar gal anyway.  Nice to know Im not the only one. K
Newbie searching for a job
I'm in Indiana.
Newbie searching for a job
The only thing that my school offers is an externship. I am required to do 160hrs. of unpaid work before I can get my degree.
Newbie searching for a job

I will have my Associates of Applied Science Degree for Medical Transcription in March and am trying to get an early start on job searching.  Does anyone know of any good companies that will hire someone at entry level?  My main goal is to do it from home so that I won't have to pay for daycare and basically be working just to pay a sitter.  If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!

Venting and Searching

Okay, I need to vent.  I've been at this study now for 1 1/2 years and am SOOO ready to be done with it.  I have become so frustrated with the online course that I am taking.  I get the hint they are severely understaffed, having to wait sometimes 2 weeks to get one transcript graded and back to me.  Now, I am ready to submit a transcript that they require a 90% target accuracy rate on and I need to ask them questions.  I have submitted 2 e-mails and called them now 3 times, only being allowed to leave messsages which noone will return.  They grade everything with such inconsistencies that it's impossible to know what to do anymore.  I need to know from them if they will mark me off for adding headings to a HISTORY AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION or mark me off if I don't add them (I have been marked off for both).  And the doctor has put blood work in a separate paragraph than the physical exam.  I know I will not get a 90% and they will mark me off either way, so I wanted to get some advice from someone at the school!!!  BTW, this is Allied and I know they are hated here on this board.  I am just trying to do the best with what I have gotten and they are making it increasingly difficult!!  Thanks!

6 months and still searching!
;) So, I've taken the ball into my hands, and I must say, it hasn't helped!

I've applied to numerous companies that were willing to hire a "noob" but heard nothing back from any of them.

Does anyone know of a few more I could look up?

I graduated with a 97% accuracy, so I'm not worried there. Let me know! Any help is appreciated!
I haven't, yet. (sm)
I emailed her on the 12th letting her know a complaint had been filed with the BBB, she emailed me back and said she would mail out the check the following day, which would have been last Wednesday. Hopefully, it will be here soon, I know how slow the mail can be. I will let everyone know when (if) I do receive it.
If you haven't already
contact both M-Tec and Andrews and speak with the folks that run the schools. They are both very accessible and can help you figure out what would be the best fit for you.
I found a job after about a month of searching
I have read the threads with so many negative comments about Softscript, but they do hire new grads.

You might find something searching for the ABC+Z system. And
s
No, I haven't talked to
anyone yet. They just sent me an e-mail with all of the info and papers to sign. I am in San Antonio.
If you haven't already enrolled...
check with the BBB.
It is one of the worst schools out there. If you haven't
paid your money don't.   If you read through the archives you'll see many posts where their graduates were unable to pass tests and/or felt ill-prepared for the real MT world.  They are cheaper than most, but you get what you pay for.
You still haven't addressed the issues brought up below . (sm)
The first sentence of your post above says you are going to address the issues posted on this board, and yet you STILL haven't addressed these issues, such as why you take money upfront instead of letting people buy their own software, why you charged for software that is free, why does someone need to buy a foot pedal from you when they can buy it on their own, and if someone already has a foot pedal and the software what would you charge them. It seems you're skating around the issues instead of addressing them. This has nothing to do with pleasing people 100% of the time, and it has nothing to do with personnel issues. I don't work for you. This is about enlightening those who need it about the scams that are out there.

And you DO respond to these posts very quickly. You responded to my original post INSTANTLY.
how can you rate a "car" you haven't taken out on the "highway" yet?
x
.....if you haven't figured it out by now, Trans--Am is a scam- sm
any company that asks you to pay $$$ in order to work for them is not on the level. (I am not talking about renting equipment like a C-phone, footpedal or a computer). I have not heard of Career Builder, but again do not pay to work for anyone. As for trying to get a job just keep applying and test everywhere you can.
For Career Step, yes. Their grads haven't done as well for me as M-TEC & Andrews
In my experience, M-Tec and Andrews are the cream of the crop.
Plenty of jobs out there w/o typing tests. Haven't

I've been searching for quality MT school- glad I found this Board

It appears that everyone can agree on M-Tec or Andrews School--by the way is that Linda Andrews and not Andrews/Holbrook?

I want to get started with training soon and I'm having difficulty deciding.  I've taken both their tests and they both seem like good choices.  Decisions, decisions...

You can shoot on over the other boards
which is the pay.  You can also shoot on down this board and read posts about people that have no idea how they are going to get hired when most companies won't hire a new MT.  There are a few answers for ya'.  Hate to sound unkind, but it takes a good 5 years to make a little more than min wage.  Save your money and time or attend that college for something different because there is no way you'll make what they are promising; I can almost guarantee that especially with the fact that most of our jobs are being given to offshore MTs at this point in time.
Dear Sue - there used to be many different boards on this forum
but most were eliminated due to it becoming overwhelming for Dear Administrator. So that's why you will see ramblings on the Main Board - other boards were absorbed here.
Post your resume on the various job boards.
Most of them are free.  There are some companies that do not post openings but hire from the resumes.  You can also apply to companies who do post.  Those that want experience may be a bit more willing to hire you because of your medical background.
Place your resume on the various job boards.
There is one here and I know other sites have free boards too.  You can also send resumes to local offices/hospitals.
Post your resume on the various job boards. It is
free.
for Angela: Right above the questions on this boards
you find a box. Enter into this box: 'Penn Foster' and click search.
You'll get opinions of MTs about this school
Post your resume on all the job boards. There are companies who

do not post openings for whatever reason, but they will hire from the resumes posted.  It isn't a guarantee, but gives you more exposure and the chance to perhaps get a job.  I agree with the other poster to try for an in-house position.  When I first started out 20 years ago I never heard of an at-home MT, we pretty much all worked in an office or in a facility.   Many times medical offices hire someone to work in medical records and there may be several facets to their job, one of which is transcribing and might be something you want to consider.

If any company offers you a position but want you to buy equipment/software up front be very cautious.   Come here to see if anyone has heard of the company, as there are companies preying on newbie MTs.  If a company offers you a position at a radiculously low rate also proceed with caution and come here and ask about them.

Have her post resume on the various job boards. Some companies

don't advertise, but they will hire from resumes.  You have to be careful though as there are some companies who will try to take advantage of newbies.

Your MIL will have a much harder time finding a position than someone who took a course through a company that is known to have a good program.   Programs like the one she took are pretty much a waste of money and many end up paying more $$ to get into a better program or going through a mentoring program.

I miss the CareerStep message boards

The boards are closed to people who didn't go to that school. I didn't go and love the school I went to, but that board was great because it had a lot of job leads and information on companies, especially smaller MTSOs. I would love to be able to access it again.

check your local hospitals' job boards
You might find MT jobs posted there that aren't ever advertised anywhere.

My coworker had no experience, but took a job in the secretarial float pool at the hospital while she was finishing her online MT schooling. When a swing-and-evenings part-time slot became available (posted on the jobs board, but never advertised elsewhere), the MT manager was willing to give her a shot and roll her out on easy stuff first. Two years and a bazillion questions later, she's turned into quite a good MT, I must say, and just last month she began working from home. :)

I also had to take the bad (weekends and swing and all holidays) shift to get my foot in the door when I first started. It's the nature of the biz.

Also, I would highly, highly, highly recommend you work in-house, sitting pretty much knee-to-knee with a seasoned pro who can mentor you... as you both are paid hourly. A newbie working on production all alone at home will be making less than minimum wage. I hope I'm not crushing your dreams; just giving you a dose of realism. You need a mentor.

Best wishes to you all.
You will hear responses from both ends of the spectrum and everything in between on these boards. (s
Personally, I LOVE MT. I went to The School That Dare Not Speak Its Name (not one of the "big three") and I had a job before I finished my course. I have had plenty of work since then working for a local service.

I only work about six hours a day. I could work more if I wanted, but I have children and would like to spend my time with them. I make about $1500 a month, which was what I needed to make to supplement our income.

You will read here about people who say they make $60K a year, and you will read here about people who swear they have no work and that the end of the world is nigh. Take it all with a grain of salt.

For what it's worth, I love what I do. I spent six years in college getting a BS and an MA, and I will never use them again... I love MT! Good luck, and feel free to email me if you like. I think you'll be just fine.
Post your resume on all the various job boards, send resumes to
local clinics/doctor's offices, apply to local hospitals.   As a newbie getting a job is hard, but some companies will hire you based on the school you got your certificate from.  Some schools are better than others and if you didn't get your certificate from one of the better ones changes are harder of getting a job.   Most likely you'll need to work in-house for a while.  There are some companies that will offer you a job, many at low to no pay, and there are a few companies that are not legit, so be sure you investigate before accepting.  If you have to fork out any money for equipment or software in order to get the job be cautious, especially if they require you to purchase it from them.
Newbie post your resume on all the job boards. Respond to
ads posted on the job boards.  Look through your local paper.
Newbie MTs, do not post test questions on any of the MTStars boards. To do so will result in your
posting privileges being revoked.  Take your tests honestly.
Search the boards and send out resumes, and review your grammar and punctuation

My info
I am currently enrolled in Andrews MT course (started last week) and I'm almost 29 years old. I do think that probably most people in their early 20's don't necessarily consider MT as a career. For me, the thought had been in my mind for several years, but it wasn't until I started thinking more seriously about starting a family relatively soon that I finally enrolled. When you're very young and don't have kids, and aren't thinking about kids, you tend to have different priorities. For me, I've been working for more than 10 years, have a long commute (an hour one-way) and want to start a family, and it's important to me to be involved with my kids, be able to see them off in the morning, be here when they get home... MT becomes more and more attractive.
course info..
has anyone heard of the At Home Professions MT learning course?
My info
I graduated in October of 2004 and I'm 38. I did several years of medical billing and opted to try mt as i became disabled. Been unalbe to find work or a mentor so far. If you have any ideas let me know.
Need info

Could someone please explain the major differences between acute care basic 4 and multispecialty clinic transcription?   It seems that the job ads usually specify which one and how much experience is needed with each of these categories, but I am curious to know the differences and why someone with several years of multispecialty clinic experience may not do well with acute care hospital transcription.

TIA for any info provided!

Need more info
Does this pt have some sort of respiratory condition?
Here's some info..... (sm)

Sorry to hear of your troubles!

There are two main schools, Andrews School and Career Step.  If you graduate from one of these schools, then you will likely find employment quickly.  They cost more, but you get what you pay for!  You will have to test with individual companies to get hired, but that should not be a problem with the proper training.  There are plenty of companies that hire at-home workers, so that will not be a problem either.

Don't quote me on this, but I think Career Step qualifies for Pell grants so if you go through voc rehab be sure to check that out.  Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info.
I will send resumes to those companies.
Too Much info
If I were you I would hang on to my day job at that school unless you have to work from home. It is hard for a newbie fresh out of any MT school these days and the line rates are going down hill fast. Even with experience they don't want to pay for all we have to know/do. Still if your heart is set on MT work I would go with one of the top 3 schools, wish I had but at the time I picked the only school that I could afford to go to. Best of luck to you whatever you decide but if you have full benefits where you are now -- I would stay there.
Thanks for the info! nm

CAI info

CAI has a message board on their site where their students exchange info, you may want to check there http://www.caihometype.com/.  Hopefully some grads will see your post here as well and contribute.  I found it to be an excellent education and I got a job within 1 1/2 weeks of graduation.  They have an extensive list of companies who hire their grads that you can ask for upon graduation.

Good luck with your choice!

Thanks for the info

I did look into community colleges.... It seems like the same Career Step program but triple the cost.   I like that the career step program is pretty cheap when compared to others and is an approved program. I just wonder how much harder it will be to find a job after graduating from career step then it would Andrews or m-tech....And then when you get into what program (basic, premier, etc, etc) it gets even more confusing!

Thanks for all the info!

Where did you get your CS info? more..
Hi Amanda,
I've posted here on the boards about CS through Everett Community College and have received many emails from working CS/Everett grads telling me they loved it. They had jobs before graduation and felt very prepared to go to work.
I just wondered where you're getting this info about their education. Did you go through CS? Does your employer not hire CS?
Do you think going through Everett makes the difference?
I'm not trying to be nasty in anyway. I really do wonder where this info comes from.
Thanks,
Christy
Thanks for that info.
I really do look forward to getting started with them.  Everyone there to whom I have spoken and contacted has been really nice.
