Most common or major?

The nationals include Medquist and Spheris.

Other larger companies that you might consider: Webmedx and Accuscribe.

Personally, I would just look on the job board here and start applying all the way down the line.

Mumbling doctors cause major frustration!
Why can't someone just speak clearly? Grrr. Sorry, really needed to vent to someone who understands. I have re-played and re-played and it doesn't make it much better. This doctor clearly mumbles.
Not all, but it is common
If your SmartType is new enough that you can return it and you do find out that your platform is not Word-based, just send it back for a refund and try something like Instant Text; IT works with just about anything.

Good luck!
Hearing actual dictation files versus professionally read ones was a major plus

Common sense...
...says that if you want to do MT you need to take a class. It's not that hard to figure out. I don't need to get over myself nor am I not being nice. I gave the OP great advice that will help her in the long run. You can tell me all the mistakes I make on here but it's just you wanting to bring ME down, which it will not do. It just makes you look bad. You don't magically know the rules for MT by being a nurse. They are 2 separate things. I did say that it would be a good in house job. If a nurse wants to work from home for a national, they will have to take classes. Otherwise--the ads would say: Calling all nurses! No experience needed! You just need to want it bad enough and we'll hire you! Have you ever seen an ad like that? From what I hear, recruiters say that they will not test those who haven't gone to a good school (nurse or not) because it is a waste of time. Why? Because they fail. You may not like the truth, but it outweighs encouraging people to try and set them up to fail. That would end up totally discouraging them. Encourage them the right way with the right advice.

Have a nice day!
Most common MT companies

I'm sure that someone out there can easily answer my question.  I am a newer MT with only 6 months of experience and am trying to get on with an at home company.  It has been suggested for me to just apply to the major companies out there and see what happens.  I have already applied at Focus Informatics, but other than that I don't know which other companies to try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It's a common problem, the no experience thing--
you may want to try to find someone to mentor you through that. If you have really good skills, another thing is to do an internship. Some MTSO's (usually the smaller ones) are willing to trade off the time it takes to walk a newbie through the rest of their training, if the newbie is willing to work for less.  I know I see newbies all the time who want their 6-8 cpl, but all I can say is I find experienced people with good skills who offer to work for that, so why would an MTSO pay a newbie that?  This is all part of the unfortunate decline of the MT trade...
