Any suggestion
I am a new MT, who transcribed for 5 months with an experienced MT of 15 years.  Who now is seeking new employment because the hospital she worked for has gone to offshore.  How should I lable my experience?  Looking for work, I am finding it hard, because I don't have 2 years experience.  I transcribed for ortho doctors.
my suggestion
It can be hard to get your foot in the door, or back in the door. How about this:

Contact local doc offices about filling in for their MTs this summer -- covering for vacations. Even if the MT works in-office perhaps they would let you take it home. Maybe even do this sort of thing until baby #2 arrives and then try applying with the WAH companies. You would have some more names on your resume, perhaps some new specialties you would have experience with at that point. I would also advise that you get some good reference books if you will be doing stuff that is new to you.

Good luck. It can be tough.
I want to thank you for your suggestion...

It is greatly appreciated.  I live in a really rural area, and the closest hospital clinics are 20-50 miles and have no openings.  The closest specialty office is 90 miles away.  I did find a job through this board, and am happily a working IC MT now.

I appreciate the advise though, any bit of knowledge from an experienced MT is so wonderful to receive!

One suggestion would be... (SM)

work on-site.  If you try to gain employment at home, then ask for sample dictations of the "hard to transcribe" physicians.  Not all hard to decipher are ESLs.  Do not expect to make a lot of money at first, it won't come until you've had quite a bit of experience.  You have to "get your feet wet" so to speak.  Try to apply with smaller companies who are willing to train and work with you.  Larger nationals are looking for quick typists with lots of knowledge, so this is usually not a good fit for newbies.  If you have completed a course, then you are actually one up on people that have not because you've had formal training.  Now, all you need to do is apply it.  Think about the part of the body, think about the type of report, think about the physician's specialty.  Look for hints such as syndromes, diseases, maneuvers, etc., and do your search under those terms instead of trying to find a word by the first sound.  Think anatomically!  Also, loosen up, relax and back listen if need be.  Sometimes, the physician will repeat his "hard to learn language" in the Impression and final statements of his/her report.  Ask for samples, samples, samples!  You can never have enough of those.  Hang in there, and it will get better.

My suggestion is
My suggestion would be to send your resume anyway, and take their tests. It's a great way to get a feel for what they expect. Most places will at least allow you take the test, and sometimes that will lead to a job - even if you don't have the 2 years experience. They'll see that you are able to pass the test and maybe give you a chance. It may take many failed attempts, but don't give up. Just keep taking the tests and one will eventually pan out!
A suggestion
Potential MTs typically do a lot of research to determine if this is really something they want to do. The decision often hinges on the need for a portable and/or home-based career.

If you are a respiratory tech, you will already know a good bit of the background material required for MT. You have, after all, taken courses like anatomy and physiology, and you are already familiar with patient care, medical records, and so forth. In that respect, you know that you enjoy the general field.

If you have not already done so, stop by the HIM (medical records) department in your hospital. Ask the director or some other supervisor if they can let you listen to some dictation. Since you already work in the hospital with access to patient records, they may agree to this. They can often let you listen by dialing into the dictation system over the phone, and they don't have to let you hear the patient identification. If they have in-house MTs, visit them to see what they do. They may have some training material you can listen to.

If you are just looking for a job change, stop by and visit their coders. Have them explain what they do and how they do it. With your background, coding might be something you would enjoy. It requires superior skills with respect to attention to detail and reading comprehension--you have to be able to understand medical writing and be almost hyper-focused on quality--but does not require the knack for excellent writing and the keyboard skills. Coding is a continual challenge, with a requirement to keep up with constant change. If you enjoy solving problems and investigating solutions, coding might appeal to you.

Same suggestion plus . . .
I think some distance MT schools will be able to work with you if you have a MAC. You would be able to complete school, which will take about a year, before you have to think about a new computer.

If you attend a school which will prepare you for a job with a national service, you might not need to worry about the new computer, because the employer is likely to supply one.

In other words, trying to plan a career around a soon-to-be-outdated model of a computer you now have isn't worthwhile. If you want to do MT, do it without concern for whether you will eventually need to use a new or different computer.
Another suggestion
Have you tried contacting the local doctors and hospitals and offering to be a "sub" MT? In case one of theirs gets sick or they get to much overflow? It may be a way to get your foot in the door and get some experience!
Suggestion
Look them up on the job board here and at www.mtchat.com. Read the postings there. When you do that, you should be able to figure out which ones are "major" and which ones are not.

Also, you might want to stop posting on the internet about this using your real name with the information that you have only 6 months experience. If you do not, you might as well not bother applying at all, because every recruiter will be able to search for your name on the internet and find out that you have no experience and had to post all over the place just to find names of companies to apply to. What you're saying here now will NEVER go away.

A suggestion
If you want someone to hire you, you will have to look and sound as though you are a desirable candidate for the job. Your course should have communicated to you that this work requires exceptionally good writing ability. Good spelling and grammar go with that.

Your posts are filled with poor English, grammatical errors, and misspellings. If your school did not tell you that your abilities in this area need improvement, they did you a disservice.

Take time NOW to work on those areas. If you can get to the point that your writing looks literate, someone might hire you. If you cannot see, or won't admit, that you need to improve, you should not expect to succeed in medical transcription.

Here is your post with some corrections: "I know what you mean. I, too, graduated from an MT program in November, 2008, and have had no luck finding anything yet. Everyone wants 2+ years of experience, but how can anyone gain experience if no one will hire them? I'm getting so mad!

Well, good luck to you, too,"
Suggestion
AHDI put something out called "Getting Your Foot in the Door."  I looked at it a little bit, and it seemed to have a lot of really helpful information for how to get started in the MT business.
what a great suggestion

I never thought about expanding medications, but what a great idea.  Many of them, especially in the ER, are almost always given in the same dosages.

suggestion to job hunting
Hi, I would like to also suggestion checking your local hospital postings, stop by their HIM department to introduce yourself, go to your local doctors' offices and drop of resumes for PT or prn work.  Even if you are offered low pay, grab it to start with, it would count as experience on your resume.  Maybe if put ad in local newspaper.  Good luck and congratulations! mb

Excellent Suggestion
It's funny that I just read this.  I just applied to a company for an editing position and offered to work for them for 2 weeks sans pay to get my foot in the door and so that they could evaluate my performance.  I just finished up an externship of 8 weeks with a company based in Utah and loved it although that wasn't nearly enough time to get "experience".  I would be very willing to work sans pay for a few weeks (I've already done 8 of them, lol) to be considered for a job.  I also have most of the stuff already needed to get right to work.  I have the foot pedal, reference books, spellchecker and computer.  Any chance I could have to get the experience needed to get me started works for me.  I live in a very very small town and all the places here (clinics and offices) all send their work to a company in Indianapolis (3hrs away from me) so of course there is no chance of me getting work with them that would be in house.
My suggestion: Call Linda from Andrews & Kathy or Susan from M-TEC, explain your concern for their

online vs local job

Where I live the local votech school has a very high placement rate and if I wanted to work in house, I would start by taking their MT course. My local school's course is far from complete though, and there is no way a national company would hire me with just that course and no experience.

I have no idea what the local employers would think about an online program.  We're kind of in the sticks and they really rely on the local tech school to pump out grads that can do the work the local companies need them to do.  Its practically tailored to the needs of the local economy.

I'm going with an online program because I want to be sure I can gain employment, and I want thorough training.

Not sure how much this helps.

my experience in online MT course

Hello everyone,

Just thought the information on my website will be helpful and/or interesting to anyone who is thinking of trying medical transcription cource.

it's here

http://www.volkovs.com/family/julia/default.aspx?p=mt

Considering that most colleges are going online
this advice doesn't hold water. It doesn't make any difference what format the program takes.
Can someone tell me what the online schools

Career Step, M-Tech, Andrews - I have a family member who is interested in getting her daughter directed on a career path (she's 18).  I'm not so sure MT is for her, but I'd like to at least give her some basic info.  So, how much do these programs cost and how long do they take?

  Thanks!

I took their online test on 8/21 and just
heard back from them yesterday. The lady I talked to there told me that she is really behind on contacting people. When did you apply with them?
help for finding right online course
I have tried to get info on online courses and it is very hard, since i have no other MT friend to talk to.  I was told to take courses from Ashworth(formerly PCDI)  Does anyone know about this one?  Seems like everywhere i turn, Career Step is always the most talked about.  I realise they all have pros and cons but someone please help!!!  Want to do at home training online.  Had a year experience of part-time transcribing and did fine.  Barely told what to do, but completed it anyway.  I've had EXPERIENCE THE HARD WAY by doing this.  Thanks
online quizzes

It's important to keep studying and practicing right up until you land the job you studied and worked so hard for. Time away from your studies will nevertheless, leave some cobwebs in your mental attic.

I've started to assemble some online quizzes (free) so students can keep learning. It's so new in fact, I have one done.  lol  But I intend to put some more out there if the response is good. I need a beginner and one who will test this out with me and for me. It would be nice for the others if we can get this in the right direction.

visit: www.gotranscribe.com  and click on MT Learning Studio for instructions.

I'd appreciate it and so would some of the others if it works as I think it could.

AHDI online
I don't know if this would help or not. I think they would be your best bet at finding your answer 100%.
online testing
at focusinfomatics.com They have online testing specifically for new people, and if you do well enough they will invite you into their training program.
You can always order it online....

MT Online Schools
I am looking for an online school for MT. Forgive my ignorance about this. I have no clue where to start.

Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.
Online MT schools??

Hi.

I just signed up for Allied MT School.  Have any of you graduated from there, and did you like it?  Also, did you have any problem getting a job after graduating?  I am a bit discouraged with some of the negative reviews.

Thank you.

Online Externship
I am a transcription student looking for an online company that offers an externship. I have to complete an externship in order to graduate, but need to do so online, and am having trouble finding an online company that would be willing to take me in. I have searched for transcription companies, but have not found any that advertise any externship opportunities. Are there any companies offering online externships?

online test
Don't feel bad - I've done transcription for over 25 years, had a CMT for 15 of those years... took an online test with MRC (Medical Records Corporation).  I did the test, waited for two whole weeks... they never got back to me until I asked them what the hel_ was going on and they told me I failed the test - would someone explain that to me?  My audit score for the company that I am currently working for, is 97-98........
online tests
I also took the Medquist exam after they sent me an email requesting that I take it.  I felt very confident that I did well but was told I did not pass.  They said to take it again in three months, which is now.... and now I have no confidence at all to do it.
CS online training
Hey all you MTs. My wife started the classes with CS about a month and a half ago, and I will say we were really nervous about it at first also...The staff is really professional, and they have a very competitive rate for their schooling. WHat I WILL say is this:
Online schooling for any career choice is daunting. I went to Law school online, and it SINKS when you have a question to ask and nobody to ask in person. It is also very easy to ignore the schoolbooks and just watch tv or sleep in.
As with anything, its all about what you put into it. Career Step has gotten a lot of rave reviews from alumni, so I wouldnt worry about how good of a school it is. You should be more cautious about the MT employers out there lately!

Online that hire newbies
Does anyone have any resources for new 'graduates' of home study/unpaid internship training in transcription to find online companies that hire newbies to work from home? Thanks for your help! :)
Last night on Lifetime was an online....sm
Last night on the Lifetime Channel was a 2006 movie called Fatal Desire with Anne Heche and Eric Roberts and it was just about this, meeting online......it was a good movie...just repetitive to me about how these bad things do happen online and the ending was AWFULLY shallow and dumb, but the movie, in general, was a true story about this woman named Tanya Sullivan who ended up with a life sentence in jail......
financial aid for MT online school
I am currently pursuing a career in medical transcription. I have been searching the net for over six months for an online course. I have applied to Fafsa "Pell Grant" for many schools which offer the online transcription course. Unfortunately all of the courses are listerd under "continuing education" which apparently is not covered by federal funds.  At this time I am unable to pay for my education, but it is something I want badly. If anyone out there knows of any online MT schooling that can covered by financial aid, please let me know. Also, if anyone knows of any funding that is available for this course, that would help me tremedously.
Online Training Schools

I am looking for good online training MT schools that offer good quality education along with practise sessions and also job assistance. I am new to MT field and have gone through some of the discussions about top online schools (Mtec, CareerStep and Andrew).
For those who have taken courses from this schools (and have got jobs), can you tell me what makes it to take this online courses and why.
also which would come first interms of payling less and getting most of it?
which other online training institutes can NE considered?

Any kind of help, assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Kaplan & U of Phoenix online?

Anyone have any opinions, hear anything about these two online MT training programs?

I already have an Associate's so it would be nice to get a BA from U of Phoenix. I haven't received their info pkt yet.

Thanks for any info.                     -MKJ

Try a good online school -
I graduated from M-Tec in 2001, had numerous offers to test before my actual graduation, passed all the tests I took (I believe it was 4),and had a job before I even had my diploma in my hand. I have been happily employed at home doing acute care ever since! Check them out! :-)
online testing question

I can ace the objective parts of online tests, but when I get to the transcription part, I'm never sure whether they want you to just type everything verbatim--even if the dictator stumbles over words, corrects himself/herself mid-sentence, or really needs some punctuation for clarity's sake--or if they do, in fact, want you to edit "on the fly." Any advice is appreciated. Thanks very much!

local or online school?
I live in Spokane, WA, and I'm considering studying MT
to become a transcriptionist. I am very much attracted to the idea of studying at home at my own pace. I am deciding
between 3 distance learning schools:

1. Andrews 2. M-Tec 3. Career Step

I have read that Andrews and M-Tec are very good (both
cost under $4,000) and that Career Step doesn't prepare one well for the MT profession (costs under $2,000).

After I spoke to a former student at the Spokane
Community College MT program she advised that she wouldn't spend more than $1,500 on the MT training and strongly recommended Spokane Community College.

Here's my dilemma:

The SCC program takes 4 quarters. If I signed up on January 3, 2008, I would be done at the end of 2008 - the program takes the whole calendar year.

The online options are self-paced, and because I only work part-time, I imagine I would be done a lot sooner, maybe in 6 months.

The former student at the SCC also explained that if I attend a local program = Spokane CC, I will have a much better chance of getting a job locally.

However, at this point in time I don't know if I will be staying in Spokane for the foreseeable future (it depends on my husband's job situation) and might be moving out of Spokane sometime at the second half of 2008.

I have a Master's degree in English. I'm mentioning this because I know a good portion of a MT program is language study.

Would you please give me advice on what to do? Take the Spokane Community College course or one of the expensive online options?

Thank you very much.
trouble with online tests?
Anyone else applied to Medquist or FocusInfomatics and have trouble passing the test??  I cannot figure out why I did not pass the transcription test and they can't tell me...just hoping I'm not alone...thanks
Look online and apply daily! sm...
Looking for MT job postings online is probably the quickest way to find out who is hiring. Most local newspapers are also now online. Don't forget about networking with your graduate peers!
I think timing plays a huge role in getting that first MT job. Find out who is hiring and apply on a daily basis! Job hunting is a full-time job that pays off in a huge way!
Career Step Online Traning

I am seeking an at home MT training couse that would ultimately allow me to work from home once completed.  I was hoping to hear from anyone who has taken the Career Step online training course, and if so, how would you rate the program?  Did you find it somewhat easy or difficult in securing at-home employment? Or, Is there another online training course that you would recommend over Career Step? Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated!

Career Step Online training
Self-motivated is a rather limp way to describe the course. There is no instructor support, nor is anything except the final graded by a human being.

I think you have to be a bit more than self-motivated. If you don't know wether something is right or wrong a computer graded response won't help you learn.

Just an observation from a
student who finished the course.
Community college course or online? Your opinions? sm:)
Hi. I'm new to the board, and would like your opinions on which you think is a better education: local community college here which offers an MT certification course (3 semesters in length) or online with either CS or M-Tec?
I am self disciplined, but still may stay more focused if I have deadlines, and classes to go to. I'm not sure...
Have any of you found more value in one choice or another? Thanks in advance for your time/input! :) Anne
I would search several companies that have online testing
There are plenty of them. You do not have to have years of experience transcribing, but will have an opportunity to show them what you are capable of.
